I'm running OSX 10.5.8. I have never been able to load the program.
When I try and manually start G.C. through Terminal, I get the
following message...

/Applications/GoldenCheetah.app/Contents/MacOS/GoldenCheetah
Cannot open qollector_interpret program, available from

Colin,

I suspect you have some file that is causing our code to go crazy and
allocate a very large array. Do you have a ~/Library/GoldenCheetah
directory? If so, could you tell me what's in it? If only one or two
files, can you send them to me off-list?

Thanks,
Sean

It should crash again... You could also try removing the file with the youngest date. That is, the ride that is closest to today. Then restart and see if it works..

Generally, GC will load the last ride of all your rides. So if it's crashing on a ride file, there's a good chance its the last one. That being said, there could be other things in play.

If you can locate that ride/file causing GC to crash, we'd like you to send it to us if possible so we can figure out why.

I wonder if these teething pains with bad ride, zone, etc. files
justify a "trace" command line option that dumps state to stdout.
Something like:

$ gc --trace
Parsing /home/joe/.gc/power.zones
Parsing /home/joe/.gc/Joe Rider/20091215.csv...done
Parsing /home/joe/.gc/Joe Rider/20091216.csv...
(segfault)

The hackers among us can just fire up gdb and use it to track down the
problematic file. That is somewhat more difficult for the growing
community of non-programmer users.

A trace mode would make it easier for the file to be identified with
precision. Once that's done, the user can remove it from the ride
directory, and (hopefully) send it to the developers for analysis.

Ya, but someone will have to strategically place trace statements all over where we think it can crash.. But doable.

That being said, more often then not, it's a wonky file and wonky files can go wonky all over..

What would be cool is if the people we help would help us by sending in the file that caused the crash.....

It probably wouldn't hurt to do an audit through all the file loading
code. I bet we'd find a lot of places to add in error checking code.
I'm pretty busy right now, but if someone wants to make a list of all
the code we have that reads files, I'll sign up to audit a few,
especially the ones I wrote. Any other volunteers?

I got the same problem after going from GC version 1.1.325 to 1.2 on
an Intel Mac with Leopard 10.5.8. I did try to isolate the guilty file
causing the crashing (by removing one by one each file and relaunch
GC). In my case the the problem was the "power.zones" files from the
previous version. Without this single file GC 1.2 work just well. If
it can help, I will upload the file in the File section.

Sean,

you seem to have added some error checking WRT power.zones in commit
a3ae0ee. I seem to recall you making some changes earlier that
reverted the zones work that Dan C. did. I've never had a problem
with my power.zones until now. Im getting the high must be > low on
line two error.

It seems that at some point we had zones defined just by the high
values and they were continuous.
e.g.:
BEGIN: CP=330
0,Coasting,0
1,Active Recovery,17
2,Endurance,182
3,Tempo,248
4,Lactate
Threshold,297
5,VO2 Max,347
6,Anaerobic Capacity,396
7,Sprinting,495

have we gone back to needing to specify the high and low values of
zones?

Personally I like the concept of having just one fixed format (as
opposed to being able to specify several ways in Dan's code), and
the ability to have default zones defined just based off of the cp
value if specific zones are not defined. It would just be good to
know that we are back to one format and what that is (presumably the
original format that is on the main GC site).

Thanks,
Jamie

Cool,

There is still a problem. It is related to setting a new CP zone
from the crit Pow plot. WHen you click "save cp value" it rewrites
your entire power.zones file into dan's format (which is apparently
no longer supported). I was a bit curious as to why my power.zone
file didn't look like the one on the website no w we know why.

I guess that we need to add support for Dan's zone def's back in, or
change the format that save cp value generates. I think the
optimal solution would be to support Dan's format, but write to the
one that you seem to fall back on as a "standard"..

BTW I like the dialogs that indicate errors in the zones file. It
gives users a clue at to what may be wrong. Nice addition. I've
just notices this issue with the zones because of that. As of late
I don't care much about zone def's, rather just having my cp set. So
the errors in the cp file from older dates were essentially silent.

This may also raise a feature that I've been wanting to see for a
while, a zones editor in the preferences. Bad zones files seem to be
a major cause of headaches and having a UI to collect the data and
then write it to the correct format would be great. Unfortunately I
don't have the codeing skill to do this.

Thanks,
Jamie

What makes you think Dan's format is no longer supported? As of
commit 71d67e2 the handling of the power.zones file should be the same
as it always was, except that you're no longer allowed to specify a CP
<= 0.

Ugggh,

My bad, I must not have had the latest git. I thought I did.
Then again I laid it down on some black ice this morning. Maybe I
DID hit my head.

Sorry for the confusion.

That said, are there any feelings on having changes to the
power.zones file being written in the format that is presented on
the website rather than dan's format?? Or do we want to document the
(three?) different formats that are valid. Maybe I'm picking nits,
but this seems like a good time to address this.

I'll go back and try to dig up the changes that Dan implemented. Do
you have a preference as to where the doc should go? Directly in th

On second though, there's going to be a lot more uses who can use the
dialog than who will edit the file by hand. I say we focus our
efforts on improving the dialog, and that we don't worry about
documenting the file format for now.

Wow. One of those is 119 MB! That's one hell of a ride.

JT, when you get a chance, could you take a quick look at these? I
don't know anything about TCX files yet. They don't seem to crash GC,
but they sure make it eat up a lot of CPU.

That 119MB file seems to be an export of rides spanning several
YEARS (2007-2009) from garmin training center. I can see how this
might cause some issues :)

FWIW I don't think that we should be too worried about supporting
this type of "ride". If we do we probably need to change the way
that we import data so that GC doesn't choke on the data. perhaps
adding the ability to split rides on import?
