VM too slow on Emacs 19

I'm running VM 5.35beta, and its performance in Emacs 19.21 is
appallingly slow.

I just discovered that a similar problem I had was caused by having
BBDB insinuated (after previously convincing myself it wasn't causing
the problem). It wasn't clear to me why, but presumably some regexp
or other. Maybe there are other add-ons that can have the same
effect. 5.35 now works fine for the things I do with it in
fsfmacs19.21 (thanks, Kyle).
