Have you looked at wdired.el ?
It doesn't provide quite the same, but seems extremely close.

gah!  Well, at least I know I'm not the only person that wanted this.  

I found a recent version (1.91) on google, but it looks like it hasn't
been ported to XEmacs.  Maybe I'll take a stab at that sometime.
In the meantime, hopefully mine will be of some use to XEmacs users.

Days ago René Kyllingstad send me a patch to wdired could be used with
XEmacs. I'm so sorry that I haven't had time to merge it, test it and
post it. I promise to do all of it next week (aargh, I need to find
time somewhere!). In the meantime, if anyone want to test/use it, drop
me a mail and I can send him/her a wdired 1.9.2pre version
