Hello,

A bug has been reported in Debian, see: [link]

The bug report doesn't give much information but it seems gnuchess leaks
memory. Indeed, running something like:

valgrind --leak-check=full --show-reachable=yes ./src/gnuchess

returns lots of output.

Thanks,

 Greetings!

The "setboard" command doesn't seem to be working in 6.0.3. If I run the
following, the engine never comes back with a move:

printf "xboard\nprotover 2\nsetboard
r3k2r/pp2bppp/8/3p4/3n4/3NR3/P P1P1PbP/2BK4 b kq - 0 1\nst 1\ngo\n" |
./gnuchess

I noticed that on the other hand, "epdload" seems to be working fine. Hi:

The HELP window for the version of GNU Chess 4.10 for Windows I am using
says that the version was ported from GNU Chess 4.0 patch level 77, and
it was compiled with Borland C++.

Several bug behaviors occur using the feature Edit->Review Game. The
first bad behavior I noticed involved an _en passant_ capture. Review

 Hi,

Not sure who Matt is, but I would be really glad if this could be looked
into. My use case involves the engine waiting for an opponent most of the
time, and then waiting for him to move most of the time during a match
(ponder=off). The priority is using as little resources as possible, rather

 Hi Matt,

GNU Chess 6 uses 100% CPU, it is normal behaviour. Since it is expected to
be playing most of the time, this should not be a big issue. Anyway,
decreasing the CPU usage when the program is in "standby" is certainly an
improvement we should address.

Thanks for your interest.
Antonio Ceballos

 Hello all,

It seems that regardless of the way I run GNU chess, it consumes 100% CPU
time, even before any commands are issued.
Examples I've tried that all cause this behaviour:
./gnuchess
./gnuchess --easy
./gnuchess --uci

After any of the above, "top" shows gnuchess running at 100% CPU right away

I did not have a specific date for the next release, but this new option
along with other changes can do for a good opportunity to release. Hi Vincent,

I have verified your report, i.e. that the command below works for GNU
Chess v5, but not for v6, due to the different way to handle the user input.

The obvious way to compile a book in v6 is to run GNU Chess, enter the
'book add <filename>' command, and quit once the book is done. Anyway, v5,07 should work fine with XBoard.

Could you please indicate the exact command that you are using to start XBoard with GNU Chess as chess engine? Also when I try use manual,
before and after pgn load, I make a move with white as their first
move, then gnuchess starts thinking for blacks turn.

 Hi Matthew,
Thanks for your interest and suggestions.
The CVS repository has not been moved. We will get it up to date when we
upload the official v6.
Your suggestion---not requiring the .ini file---makes sense. Getting rid of
the requirement seems easy, but I must check that the default values are
reasonable. We will consider to include this feature in v6.

I was able to successfully do an initial compile and run it with the Native
Client sel_ldr tool (which allows for running a command-line version). I
didn't need to do anything with the file I/O, although I had to run without
any opening book. Similar projects have used a technique where they
hard-code the file as a C-language data structure and just directly access

 Hello Simon, et al,
I wanted to let you all know that I've created a clone of GnuChess 5.08 on
github (see [link]) and am investigating
the feasibility of porting this program to Native Client (see
[link]), or NaCl for short.
NaCl is a new technology that allows a web browser (currently Google Chrome

 Thanks for letting us know.
I don't think there is a lot of dependency on file I/O in the GNU Chess
5.08 code base. Opening book code is the main one (which for most
opponents can simply be omitted - which you can find in the code as
there is a "book off" option that uses a flag throughout to do the right

 Thanks for reporting.
This doesn't happen using an EPD of the file and command line or Xboard
with 5.07-7 from Debian or CVS version. I don't have windows here to try
Winboard any more, perhaps Stuart or someone could try it.
Can you let me know the version of GNU Chess you have with that.
And try saving the position as an epd file

Hey great! Will this new release be based on Fruit somehow (I heard
rumors about this)?
Meanwhile until this new version materializes it might be useful to
direct people
also to this version of GnuChess 5.07:
[link]
It fixes the known bugs in GnuChess, has new features (e.g. UCI support
