Hi.

Great app thanks. I have been trying without much success to use vlc
to convert any video file on my linux box to a format the g1 will play
and stream it so i can watch my videos on the phone. If this could be
built into the gmote server app for use with the 'On the phone'
feature that would be great. Just an idea!!

The vlc command might look something like:

vlc -vvv input_stream --sout '#transcode
{vcodec=h264,vb=480,scale=1,acodec=mp4a,ab=96,channels=2}:duplicate
{dst=std{access=http,mux=mp4,dst=:8080}}'
and then point the video player on the phone to the server address
port 8080

but this didn't work for me!!

I haven't tried the windows version for the server just yet
(installing now) but the mac version does audio great, but can't seem
to really do video.
It can launch the dvd player, but doesn't have any control once it
starts (maybe a different interface should apply for dvds for the sake
of menu access, etc.).
Another thing that would be really cool would be if the phone could be
used as a wireless mouse, to navigate on the screen (I periodically
use my macbook as a media center pc, so not having to get up from the
couch would be awesome).
Otherwise, this is an amazing little bit of programing, and I am
excited to see it develop.

Pre-buffer the next song.

I love the beta streaming application. I was very happy that it
advances to the next song in that folder without a play list, however
it would be extremely nice if it once it buffered 100% of that track
(.mp3, video, etc.) that it would start buffering the next track.
Again, I LOVE this feature of Gmote. It is the first streaming app
that I found and use it remotely to listen to my 50gb of music on my
server at home. Thanks!!!!

Hi,
Some simple feature addition would make this program perfect:

1. Store the recent used server addresses to allow user select instead
of typing every time

2. Allow "Exit" the program

Streaming the music on phone:
3.Unicode support for MP3 tag. Currently does not display Chinese mp3
tag correctly, but browsing the file list displays Chinese correctly!
Well done!

4. Automatic save the downloaded mp3/image files on to SD card

5. Allow user to download music or files to SD card

Good Work! Keep it up!
Best

After looking around a little there doesn't appear to be a
presentation tool for Android. I think this would be an easy feature
to add to Gmote. Good presentation tools control Powerpoint slides
and also vibrate at predetermined times or intervals to help someone
pace their presentation. Doesn't seem like a stretch for the G1.

This application is fantastic - my only feature request would be to
enable playing of shared playlists as well. I store most of my music
on a Drobo that uses Firefly Media Server so I don't think that I'm
able to access that playlist using Gmote.

The ability to play music is great, but certain implementations would
make it more practical. Like the ability to read .pls (playlist)
files. Or the creation of playlists and/or libraries?

i'm not a professional at this, but since a lot of Computers have
bluetooth capabilities at the moment, wouldn't it be possible to
directly contact your computer through Bluetooth? that would solve the
problem when a wireless network is absent other then that i think its
a great application, i use it a lot during my presentations, keeps me
from running around to much.

keep up the good work!

One thing I'd been thinking about which would be wicked would be a
macro editor you could use to assign keystroke combos or mouse
movements to a button assignable on the g1's touchscreen, sort of like
the programmable touchscreen universal remotes, but for your
computer.

For instance, you could assign your favorite photoshop/gimp key combos
(zoom in-out, specifc brush types, etc) to buttons on the screen with
icons representing that function .
Or you could load a profile for Powerpoint, Or a profile for say
Eclipse. It'd be like a user programmable mini-keyboard. Dock with USB
and it stays on forever while you cruise through your day.

Going one step further, you could autoswitch profiles depending on
which program has focus.

I've thought about this since I got my G1, but I don't know enough
Java to actually do it. You've got all the backend client/server code
whipped already. You're already at LEAST half-way there. Heck, I'd buy
it if it existed.

This is an awesome app and a blast to use. Keep up the awesome work
guys.

I think gmote is a great app !! The next big step shd be to be able to
view the computer desktop on the phone..so now you can essentially
control everything in the computer remotely..the programs etc would
run at the computer, but the user would be able to see & hear the
output in his phone..(the hearing part is already done, so best of
luck for the rest)..

androidVNC already does that. You can install a VNC server on your
desktop (tightVNC for instance), and connect to it with the androidVNC
client. No audio replication but you can control your computer
remotely.

Gmote is one of the best apps for the g1 so well done and thanks for
keeping it free! ...

Might it be possible to add a file transfer option so music or docs
can be wirelessly transferred to the sd card? this would open up a
whole range of new uses for the program.

Id also love to see full support for video file playback on the phone.
mp4 doesnt seem to work as suggested. Itd be cool to browse the sd
card also using the gmote interface i think.

cheers!

Gmote server should be able to display to an alternative display other
than the default. My default display is half the size of my second
display so it doesn't make much sense. I can manually move the full
screen window to the other one but that kind of defeats the purpose of
a remote.

I love the touchpad feature of the gmote.

My request to make it even better would be the capability to send
special keys with the keyboard in this mode, such as ESC, CTRL, ALT,
or the Command and Option keys for the Mac version. This would make
it infinitely more useful.

be the ability to play video files through VLC instead of iTunes.

How about an option to import music from your computer to your SD

If implemented, this feature would easily allow you to send IR signals
using LIRC and an IR blaster like USB-UIRT... so it would indeed
become a universal remote.

Awesome app since I found how to watch movie on second slave display!
It's the only player I use nowdays, thank you. BTW, I'd love to see in
new version some improvements:
1. player should be able to prevent phone from sleeping. And switch
backlight to the lowest level. Of course, it should be optional
2. why there is no progress bar/slider? It's almost impossible to
continue playing movie from somewhere in the middle
3. it would be nice to see digital clock among control buttons

thank you

Great app, thanks a ton.
I'd like to see -
Media Player Classic support
Foobar2000 support (for music, could also use the winamp api plugin to
show current artist - song on the phone side?)
Slingplayer support (with channel changing up/down buttons, and number
buttons to specify a channel)
Seek bar (I've seen this mentioned)

Perhaps in the future it can just be set so that the phone-side
buttons can be specified to a keyboard or joystick button, then most
other media players would be supported, maybe with profiles that can
be changed phone-side for different players.

I'm sure these are way down the line, and I love it the app in its
current state, just some things to consider. Thanks a ton!

Server side compression of music when streaming to the phone would be
awesome. Right now I'm using the G1 on At&t Edge. Imeem can stream
music uninterrupted on Edge speeds at what i'm guessing is around 64k,
but full mp3's from gmote need to rebuffer several times during a
single song. Awesome work man, thanks for sharing!

Cool app..

I find myself wishing I could click on a link in Twidroid but have it
open on my computer (via Wifi). Not the usual use for GMote, but would
be redundant to have a "OpenOnPC" app, I think.

Can you register GMote server as a web browser, then funnel any URLs
through the connection so when you click from the menu instead of
"open in Browser", you click "open in GMote" from something like
Twidroid, etc., it will open on your PC?

I would never register gmote as default browser, of course, as id only
use it when in range, like at work or home when i have it docked next
to me..

On iMac Gmote enables me to control iTunes directly, and therefore
what is played over my two AirTunes Airport Express devices.

Unfortunately I am unable to do the same on Windows, which uses VLC
instead of iTunes.

I love VLC, but I haven't fathomed out a way to play over AirTunes the
way GMote currently uses VLC, so what I would like to suggest is
either allow GMote to use iTunes in Windows, or make it possible to
use AirTunes (&/or Airfoil) with your version of VLC.

Thanks

Just a hint. For some Linux users it can be a bit confusing that gmote
server starts only from it's directory (all paths are relative).
Adding a line: cd `dirname $0` to the beginning of the script
"GmoteServer.sh" would make it more user-friendly. Also, would ease
making server start automatically on login.

Oops, nevermind. I just figured out you can bring up the onscreen
keyboard any time by holding down the Menu button for a second or
two. This works perfectly along with the mouse control pad screen.
To get rid of the keyboard again, hit the back button.

first of all thank you so much for this wonderful software: installed
on my HTC Magic and Ubuntu 9.04 server and everything worked perfectly
since the beginning!

I would like to be able to connect to the server using a bluetooth
connection. Hopefully it will use less battery than the wifi.

I would also add a couple of tips in the FAQ/docs:
* Gmote Touch: to use the keyboard on an HTC Magic press the MENU
button and keep it pressed until the keyboard pops-up.To get rid of
the keyboard again, hit the back button.
(as stated by Chad Dyess)
* Linux: to add a custom application launcher be sure to add the
following line at the beginning of your GmoteServer.sh file:
cd `dirname $0`
This will let you put your installation folder anywhere on your disk.
(as stated by TAKUVATA)
Also set the launcher type to: Application
The program icon is located in the GmoteServerLinux2.0.0/bin/res
folder, ready to use with the launcher.
To know where vlc is installed:
which vlc
It should find it for you. If it isn't in /usr/bin/, make a symbolic
link to it. Code:
sudo ln -s <where vlc is> /usr/bin/vlc
(as stated at http://androidcommunity.com/forums/107205-post38.html)

Again, thank you so much!

Thank you for writing this application. I like very much that I can
browse all my files because that's the way I prefer organising my
music. Unfortunately not everything works as it should for me. I guess
this is because the linux version of the server is not mature yet.
Sometimes it happens that the server dies. Also after playing music
the server prevents the gnome power manager from suspending (Inhibit
is sent via dbus but maybe not Uninhibit).

The feature that I wish is having wakeonlan on the Gmote client. I
want my sound server (a netbook) automatically to going to suspend
when not in use. Additionally to define the IP for a server it should
also be possible to input the mac address. If Gmote is not able to
connect to the server it should broadcast a wakeonlan signal to the
LAN and display a dialog "Waiting for server to resume / start up."
and provide a Cancel button.

A wake on LAN tool already exists for Android. I don't know whether it
is open source. If yes it could be mixed with Gmote:

So the streaming video to the phone is still experimental, here's an
idea to improve it.
Have the video automatically transcoded if it not supported my
android. a good example is the Upnp trans-coding server for PS3
http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/ (Its open source, cross
platform and written in java) As for what specifications the video
should conform to I found this http://www.digitalwerks.org/2009/02/27/video-on-the-android-g1/
to be a real help to encode my videos for the phone. (Though I changed
the profile to work with mediacoder instead)

As for my thoughts on what the rest of the people here say; I concur
with wireman714, Having to navigate over and over again becomes
tedious. Though I don't think Mediaplayer classic is a viable option
as this is a cross-platform app. (Though I too use it as my player of
choice)

A shutdown button? Undecided. I wouldn't use it though I can see other
people do. Just don't make it easily accessible.

jiadi.yao and cronoklee mentioned the ability to download songs to the
phone. I quite like the idea - you get my vote there. As with
cronoklee not everyone knows how to encode video's for the android
making it easier would be a bonus.

thx for a great app. the touchpad works excellent. just one thing i
miss and it is double click touchpad to drag just like laptop
touchpads work.

also a way to generate CTRL ESC ALT would be nice.

Hi Elis,

One way to 'drag and drop' items is to do the following:
1. Move the mouse over the item you wish to drag
2. Press and hold down on the trackball
3. Move the item to its destination
4. Release the trackball.

Cheers,
Marc

Hi,
Your Software is very nice !
Some little requests :

1 -Because I would use many players, a cool stuff would be to remap
multimedia keys (play, pause..) to a classic keyboard event, like
keyboard mode but also in multimedia !
2 -It's not easy to launch at session startup on Linux .. don"t know
why, it seem to keep the cpu ..

If it would be customisable it will be great :)
Ok this mode need window get the focus .. but it's more efficient for
me :)

Hi Marc,

first of all thanks for this great app!

But I second Elis request for drag'n'drop.
The trackball is not a solution for me since my Samsung Galaxy simply
has no trackball.
This also makes scrolling a pain, so a 'scrollbar' on the side of the
touchpad would be great.
I think both solutions could be copied from laptop touchpads, since
they have been proven
to work well there and they will be very intuitive for all laptop
users.

Also I was wondering if you are considering turning this into an open
source project.
I would love to help work on this software.
My previous project was very similar to this one, but for Symbian
phones:
http://pys60rc.sourceforge.net/

There are a few features, which I would love to port from it:
- show the PC screen on the phone
- show playback information on the phone
- give it some macro functionality or connect to already existing
solutions (i.e. Gizmo)
- make it more customizable by skins

Keep up the good work!

Cheers,
Dorian

I wonder if offering the option of remapping the trackball would solve this problem?

Hi Dorian,

Thank for the feedback. I wasn't aware of the 'non trackball' phones. This indeed seems to push us towards a solution that would resemble what laptops currently do. The screen is a little small and there are often issues with the edge of the screen sending incorrect burst of information but we might be able to work around those.

I'm happy to see that you are interested in contributing to the project. Gmote is an open source project and its code can be found here: http://code.google.com/p/gmote/

Hi James,

thanks for the reply.
But I don't quite understand what you mean with 'remapping the
trackball'.
If you're thinking about using the directional pad (which the galaxy
has instead of the trackball) for scrolling that would be a start.
But it would not be as usable as the trackball or the touchpad like
solution.

Dorian

Hey Marc,

thanks for the answer.
I'm really glad to see that Gmote is open source!!!
Sorry that I did not figure that out on my own.
But I did not find the link to the google code page or any other
evidence of this being open source on the official website.
Maybe you should add a 'source' link next to the 'community' link.
(searching the faq for 'open source' came back empty as well ;-)

Anyways, I'll have a look into the code and hopefully will find some
time to contribute soon!

Cheers,

I think it would be nice if some information of the media played in
the computer could be displayed in the Mobile device such as name of
the film and how much time is left, or something similar.

Otherwise I find this application great!

Well, I noticed that the server has a connection error if you do not
port forward it. But let's just say you're at a public wireless
network and you want to use the gmote via 3G but you get a connection
error even if you find out the current ip of the connection, or use
DynDNS clients like me.

The feature request here is for the GmoteServer. Just like now
uTorrent and other torrent clients can automatically port forward for
you, why not have UPnP port mapping built into the GmoteServer? This
way, we can attempt to use Gmote even if we're in a public wireless
network!

Personally I use dyndns.com's client and hosts for free, and I believe
it can be used.

A major problem I just noticed is the music sound quality. I'm not
sure what software Gmote uses to play back music, but the quality is
significantly less than Winamp while playing the same exact song.
Gmote is the best program I've discovered since Minesweeper. Please
fix this up and I will be eternally grateful.

I have been using this on a Droid too, and while it is a fantastic

trackball, since it doesn't have one. Keep up the good work and a

Great app but it requires alot more in terms of compatibility with
other phones. As others have stated, the Droid has no trackball and
thus we lose alot of the functionality gmote has to offer.

I think that the touch "ui" (or lack there of) could be updated to
offer compatibility with future devices that lack certain hardware
features.

For example, you could add what every laptop touchpad has to scroll.
Simply slide your finger along the edges and it will scroll
accordingly. Some devices with smaller screens won't need this as
they'll have the trackball, but on devices with a larger screen (such
as the droid and the X10) it will be more then adaquate. The ability
to toggle this would be a welcomed bonus.

You already have a button to toggle the keyboard. Why not go further
and add a button for right clicking. Personally waiting 2 seconds to
right click is rather annoying. Hitting a button and then tapping
would be much faster in the long run.

Another feature I'd love to see on the touch screen would be some
"favorites" button. For example, button one would launch an .exe
(Firefox) while button two could launch your instant messenger of
choice... Perhaps also add certain buttons that our hardware keyboards
dont have such as the windows key, esc, del, ins, pg up/dwn, etc.

Here is a very rough mockup

FANTASTIC APP. Only use it for the touchpad feature, but think it's
great....

...BUT. It could be better with the following little changes.
1. Click and drag functionality, in the same way you would on a
laptop, just click to select and then immediately after click again
and drag. Let go to drop.
2. I saw another app the other day that re-mapped the volume keys to
useful thinks when you were using it. I use the HTC magic, so when i'm
holding it in my right hand using the touch pad my index and middle
finger are around the other side on top of the volume controls. It
would be great if you could re-map these to right/left click while
Gmote has focus on the phone.

This is a fantastic application. I am using the current version in
the Marketplace as of November 28th. My phone is an HTC Hero, and my
computer is an MSI GT735 laptop on my wireless home network. My
computer operating system is Ubuntu 9.10 which works absolutely
perfectly; it would be good to post on the downloads page that JAVA is
a dependency.

I would love to see these features:

RIGHT CLICK on the touch-pad; I would put a touch-button on the bottom
of the screen for both buttons, and maybe a scroll-wheel for those who
don't have a trackball.

GENERATE PLAYLISTS ON THE FLY (possibly by using check-boxes beside
filenames?), and have a button in the MENU to view the playlist. To
me this one is almost a no-brainer, and I would consider it the
absolutely highest priority. I think you could probably just have it
generate an .m3u file on the fly which could be saved to any installed
SD card.

MOUSE SENSITIVITY - I would love to have an option to increase the
sensitivity of the mouse tracking - I find it a bit too slow, and have
to move my finger across the screen multiple times in order to move
from one side of the screen to the other.

SKIP forward and back/FORWARD/REWIND - I would love to see a few more
buttons on the control screen, one for fast forward and rewind, just
like now, but ALSO a skip forward and backward to jump between tracks
in the playlist.

PLAY TIME INDICATOR - a timer that shows the current position in the
track, and the total length of the track displayed on the android
screen.

DESKTOP REMOTE VIEW - I would also like to see the desktop screen of
my computer on my phone; there are times when I would like to control
my computer remotely while i cannot see my computer screen. If I
could see my computer screen on my phone, I would be very happy. I
know this one is a lot more complicated, so I am not going to hold my
breath LOL.

These are just "wants" ... I am 100% happy with it's current state of
development, but if you added some of these features, I would
definitely be compelled to buy it; I will use it a lot.

Ironically, this one is probably the easiest - especially as you've
got Ubuntu installed. Go to System -> Preferences -> Remote Desktop.
Tick the options that make you most comfortable (bearing in mind that
there is no encryption in VNC - even with password protection) and
then install android-vnc-viewer [1] on your phone.

For added security [2] , install OpenSSH-Server (I can't remember the
capitalization of the package) within your Ubuntu system, and
ConnectBot [3] on your phone. SSH to your device (doing Port
Forwarding of port 5900 to localhost:5900) and then use
Android-vnc-viewer to connect to localhost.

All the best,

Jon "The Nice Guy" Spriggs

[1] http://uk.androlib.com/android.application.android-androidvnc-Cpi.aspx
[2] Ideally, anything that connects over the internet to your device
should use SSH or SSL encryption. Even better, use a Public/Private
key for your phone that restricts what it can and can't do, however,
that goes a bit beyond the scope of this e-mail though!

Love this app. I mainly use the Streaming feature to the phone as well

I have two feature requests i think would really help this app:
One is have the two regular laptop buttons show on the touchpad, like
on the 'remotedroid' application, so you can do right-clicking as
well.

another feature i would like, but it would be a little harder to do,
is to have seamless switching between playing on the computer and on
the phone so you can have a song playing on your computer, but when
you leave the room, hit a button and it will resume playing at the
same point on your phone.

I have 2 requests would be helpful.
1. Instead of having the media controls control specific players like
VLC or Media Player. Could the remote controls simply invoke the
matching keyboard buttons? Mutltimedia keyboards have Play/Pause,
Stop, Forward, Back, Volume Up, Volume Down and Mute buttons. Couldn't
the remote application's buttons simply map to those instead? That
way, many windows applications that already listen for those key
strokes could be used by the application.

2. Please give the application the ability to keep the android device
awake. It is great to be able to control my computer and play/pause
when I need to. But if I am listening/watching something, and my home
phone rings, I need to be able to hit pause in one keystroke. Since my
android device goes to sleep after 2 minutes, when the home phone
rings, I to perform 3 actions to get the computer to Pause. First I
have to hit the power button on the android. Then I have to swipe my
finger to disable the key lock. Then I have to hit the pause button.
If the application could simply keep the device awake, I would only
have to click the pause button.

You have an amazing product here. You just saved me the $150 I would
have spent on a Logitech diNovo Mini.

Firstly let me say that this application is awesome. I really like the
touch pad feature. My feature requests would be:
1. Support for right click on the touch pad.
2. Generic Play, Pause, Stop, Forward, Back and other media functions
that work in any application e.g. Windows Media Player, Media Center
etc.
3. Full support for Microsoft Windows Media Center (e.g. virtual
remote for short cuts to Movies, Recorded TV, Music, Video, Pictures,
DVD etc.
4. A setting to allow the default screen to be the touch pad instead
of the multimedia interface.

Keep up the good work. My donation to show my support to your project
coming your way very soon.

I will start off with stating what is already known, this app is
amazing.

On to suggestions!:

1. A way to select the audio output on for the file currently being
played, (i.e. switch from spdif to bluetooth audio) from the gmote
phone client. Or conversely a way to stream the audio output to the
phone while keeping the video output on the local (server) computer.

2. To add to the progress bar-> a progress bar that shows a video's
current postion (and could potentially be used to seek through the
current file)

3. Subtitle options: often one can embed subtitle tracks into videos
and vlc can read these tracks, the ability to switch them on and off
from the phone.

4. TOTAL HAIL MARY OPTION: Integrate the gmote server with windows
media center, so I can use it as a cable remote as well!

5. Not a feature request, but the only donate link on your site that
works is the small embedded PayPal gif with the word donate on it. The
rest are just underlining or returning after click to the same page.

Gmote is awesome, i love it for playing music and streaming movies
while I'm on the train. But i'd like to see a feature where you can
select which application the gmote server uses for playback of audio
en video. (I personally like Foobar a lot because of the way it
handles play lists and i would like my audio files to be played with
it.) I hope this is somehting you consider =)
