Android phone can't connect to Gmote server on PC, debug info included...

I have a Samsung Galaxy Ace phone and installed the latest phone
client yesterday. I also downloaded the latest server at the same
time to my Windows 7 (64 bit) laptop. With the server running on the
PC the client on my phone was unable to discover it either
automatically or by IP (connected by wi-fi). I followed the
diagnostic steps in the FAQ (turned off firewall, didn't help, then
ran the debug server to gather info).

I'm not sure I understand what that means because as far as I
understand everything is happening on the internal facing side of the
router. When you say "open up" ports, my understanding is that means
opening them to the outside world and telling them which internal
address to send packets on those ports to. I didn't think anything
here needed to touch the outside world. In my router I don't see
anything that would open or block any ports inside the internal
network.

Am I completely misunderstanding what you mean? Is there an easy way
to verify (ping, telnet, etc) if the ports in question are "open" as
you ask?

I'm assuming that you're router is behind a cable or dsl modem.  When you open the port on the router then the internal port is open as well as external. Routers route traffic so both sides are open. If you are that concerned about security then map the port to only accept data from one IP. Assign that IP to your phone as it's static IP.  If you still have trouble put the phone IP you just set in the dmz (outside the firewall).

Thanks for the help.  In the end, the problem was my router. I started to accumulate other evidence that there was a problem in the router (laptops couldn't reach printer or network drive, etc).  The router was apparently not allowing access from wireless connected devices to anything else on the network except the internet.  It was a netgear router.  I updated the firmware from the company site and when it restarted, everything suddenly worked.  Now I'm very happy with gmote, enjoying my first family entertainment from the couch in years (because I could pause and resume without having to get up and look for the mouse).  Thanks again.

Hey seems you are done with it.
Sad thing is i cant do it. Even i use netgear router and when i tried this thing on other pc having other router it was working well.
so i guess the problem is netgear.
Can you please tell me in detail what you did??
Did you do port forwarding or just updated router ?
because when i login to router settings it tells me that it is up-to date.
even send the link of updating the router .
