This is for you guys who are running serpentine belts. What reverse
fan clutch are you using and how well is it working?

Steve,

I'm not sure where I have the number recorded, but 2785 sticks in my
mind. However, that number is not longer any good -- along with the
(in)famous Hayden 2797. Hayden's now changed all of their part
numbers

http://www.haydenauto.com/upload/HaydenAuto/Documents/Cat_Imperial/2007-imperial-fan-clutches.pdf

APPARENTLY, the current number is 215049 for the heavy duty clutch for
Olds 455; the corresponding reverse rotation clutch would be 215149 (1
vs 0 in position 4). I've verified all of the dimensions are the same
for the two.

So I guess that's what I'd now have to ask for -- or use that as a
cross reference number for an ACDelco. But I just checked the ACDelco
web side and the competitive cross reference won't accept any of those
numbers. :-(

If I were stuck needing one, I'd call Leigh Harrison for a P/N.

Despite all the problems I've had doing prototyping for Leigh, I've
never had a fan clutch problem nor a cooling problem (other than
during a test).

I would not want to go back to V-belts. What do you need a reverse
rotation clutch for?

Steve,

Disregard that earlier message: I mistakenly loaded Hayden's IMPERIAL
catalog rather than the HAYDEN catalog -- the P/N's have NOT changed.

And my memory about the 2785 may or may not have been correct: its
dimensions are the same as those for the 2797 except for the pilot
hole and the mounting bolts. Since I use a later diesel fan, those
differences may be necessary.

Since all the dimensions are there, you may be able to identify from
this catalog what you need:

I spoke with a fellow today that had found the AC Delco HD CCW clutch
fan for his GMC with a serpentine belt. The fan clutch failed before
the warranty ran out and they gave him another. He asked me what
everyone else was using and I didn't know. In case anyone wants one
he called back and gave me the part numbers. It is for another
application as the bolt pattern does not match up. He drops it at a
shop and they redrill it for him. I suggested that removing the
flange from his WP and drilling a dual bolt pattern would be easier
next time.
Here's the AC Delco number:12529773 (This was the original one with
dual mounting pattern).
Crosses to a renumberd one: 19150657 (Must be drilled for Olds.)
Thanks for the response Ken.

So with the proper clutch on the water pump we could find a nice
plastic fan to replace our fan of stone.

I have no reason to believe this but in my gut (which is pretty big) I
feel that a plastic fan would be better than our steel ones. Somehow I
think they would be less prone to be out of balance and should
certainly weigh less.

Something else that ain't broke that I'm itching to fix!

How can you remove the WP flange without removing the WP? Preceded by
all that junk on top of it.

Better to use one that fits in the first place; there IS one that will work.

I understand that Ken. I told him to do that to his spare for future
ease of replacement. I found years ago that opening up a box that has
a new waterpump with a dual mount flange was a crap shoot. When I had
all those pumps rebuilt a few years back, I requested a dual mount
flange on each. Very common part and those cast iron impellers are
also common. Just not much call to use them I guess.
After testing all those fan clutches I can pull one in a heartbeat
without removing anything other than 4 nuts & washers.
