Authentication Problems

Since yesterday, my Gmarks addon has not been able to log in on its
own. Pressing "Sign in" or "Retry" simply flashes a quick "Loading"
screen then it just goes back to the sign on screen.

The workaround is to authenticate once to any Google Accounts site,
thus creating your cookie, and then "sign in" or refresh Gmarks.

Perhaps Google changed something with their authentication system?

Same problem here.
No way to login through GMarks.

I noticed this problem since a couple of weeks.

Yup, same here. I think it is a change with Google authentication
because it also affects Gmail Manager for me. I have to manually sign
into my Google account before either of these work.

John, I've got this bug too. I haven't restart Fx over a week and now,
once I done it, I can't login through GMarks. The temporary solution
is to manually login into gmail or groups - GMarks works when you are
already logged in. Do you need some help with testing?

Thanks but I mostly need the help with getting time for myself to fix
it. I should be able to get to it this weekend. Sorry for the wait

I confirm this bug on MacOS 10.6.1 + Firefox 3.5.3 + most recent
Gmarks.
Solution is to login to any Google service via web. Gmarks is then
able to authenticate itself... weird..

Dear folks,

same issue: Win XP SP3, FX 3.5.3, Gmarks 1.0.1
BUT:
- it does work on my German FX installation
- it does NOT work on my English FX installation
--> both times, I use the same options for GMarks

I have the same problem but it happens randomly.
Today I could not log in GMarks again even after being logged in
GMail. So I tried my Google account instead.

When I opened the google.com page the German version came
automatically (I was connecting from Germany). I was logged in.
Then I clicked the link "Google in English" and I realised I was not
logged in. After logging in the english version GMarks was working
again.

It seems the cookies are different depending on where you are.

I can confirm the sporadic behavior. GMarks logs in properly on its
own on my home network, but at work I need to log into Google first
before GMarks will connect. Not quite what Alfarodix meant by
"cookies are different depending on where you are" :) but it's still
bizarre behavior.

This behavior is extremely frustrating-- to have to do the manual
login before using Gmarks. I don't normally have to login to Google,
and the length of my password makes it a pain. Most bothersome is the
fact that sometimes Gmarks appears to be logged in, but is in fact
disconnected-- so when you save bookmarks they will appear in the
local list but are not getting synced on Google's server. Sometimes I
get an error message ("..problem connecting to Google...") and
sometimes not, and I'm not sure how to duplicate this behavior.

I really hope a fix for this can be found, otherwise for me it makes
my previously *favorite* extension useless....

For now you can check when you log into google for it to remember your
password. I have lots of work in school and its more important for me
to focus on that than fixing bugs in the extension, especially ones
that Google likes to introduce on its own.

I got the same problem too apparently. It's not an extension-breaking
feature, just a little annoyance on my Portable Firefox extension on
which I remember my password (Master password is set, do not worry)
and my cookies are cleared everytime, so I'm not logged in
automatically.

Thanks for the extension by the way :)

Yep, same problem here with both Gmarks and Gmail Manager. At least
with Gmarks, a manual signin allows access to the bookmarks, but Gmail
Manager does not.

The best workaround for now is to check the box at any Google login
screen that says "Keep me signed in". This should put a persistent
cookie on your computer for Google sites to use (and therefore Gmarks
will use it as well).

This is essentially what the Gmarks addon was doing when you told it
to "remember" you and sign in automatically.

Thanks for the tip Jack, me too.

It syncs with IE too and will also sync your saved passwords securely
if you want. Shame it doesn't use Google Bookmarks but its own
server.

Thanks for all your hard work John, GMarks is great but I just got fed
up signing in.

I am on record as having complained about this authentication issue,
and it is a pain in the ass. BUT, I'm not going to abandon Gmarks just
yet. Firstly, I'm willing to cut the author a break as he obviously
has other things on his plate and it's not like he gets paid for this.
I have used Xmarks in the past (when it was Foxmarks) and occasionally
had frustrating synchronization issues. Perhaps that has been fixed,
however "the grass is not always greener..."

In any case, I'll try to live a bit longer with the workaround of
occasionally logging in to my Google account and clicking the "stay
logged in" box to persist the cookie. I'm hoping that John will
eventually solve this problem when time allows.

well i haven't un-installed Gmarks right yet its just disabled, and
yes Xmarks has fixed any problems it might have had, I like Xmarks
better i think as it can save my login names and pw's and also it
syncs the normal bookmarks instead of a separate area like Gmarks does.
