You can delete the GMail without deleting the whole Google Account, but I'm pretty sure when you try to create one again it will recall the name you used and "force" you back into it.

Your best bet for a new account is to just create a second Google account with the name you want, and have your mail forwarded over to the other account, or just do without the other account, and only use it for the google services you were worried about losing.

I realized you can't directly change the address, but I found out you can remove Gmail from your Google account (I still have a secondary non-Gmail address linked to the account).

I assume after removing Gmail from my account Google will automatically set my secondary email address to primary.
Of course I'd change the registered email address in all my web accounts and forward my mail to my secondary email address first so I don't lose anything.

Afterwards I'd make a new Gmail address in my existing Google account.

Would this be possible or does removing your Gmail account actually delete your whole Google account?
(Because I really don't want to lose my Youtube and/or Google Drive accounts)

I have exactly the same problem as phbrn, and it is very annoying to see that Google is this restrictive.  I don't want multiple Google accounts; I want ONE Google account (which is mainly my Blogger and G+ account) with a different Gmail address.  Like phbrn, I don't care about my old Gmail account, which is forwarded to my secondary account anyhow.  Is there any possibility Google with change this?

If you don't care about the old (current) Gmail account, then just ignore it.  Create a new Gmail account with the username you want.  After you have done that, if you like you can delete the old Gmail account.  Or have it forward new emails to the new account.

I don't see this as being "restrictive".
