Usually these problems don't just happen on their own. Generally it
is something like a Filter that you set up in your account, which is
doing that.

If your Filter doesn't seem to be working right, carefully check ALL
its settings. If it still doesn't work right, or not work at all, as
you say, then delete the Filter. Do your emails now no longer go into
the Trash?

Besides double-checking your filters, you might take a look at the "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" settings for that account.  If you are auto-forwarding all emails for that account to somewhere else, one of the options is to "and Delete Gmail's copy".  If set, that would explain everything being in the trash when you log into that Gmail account.
