You can't collapse your labels list now, and the chatbox is UNDERNEATH
it, along with the tasklist and contacts, away at the bottom of my
screen.

This is appalling. Well done, Gmail. Hopefully they implement some
GLabs to sort this garbage out.

Actually, you need to clear your cache and update.  They removed the Right-Side Labels labs because of the new drag-n-drop labels feature, which allows you to show/hide specific labels.  Read here and here:

I finally got the final update, and it's actually nicer now, you can drag-n-drop both ways, and hide all but the labels you want.  Then I use the Goto Label Lab and Keyboard Shortcuts to get to any label I want, whether it's hidden or not.  I even hid the Starred/Drafts/Sent Mail system labels to clean up the side even more.

But Colin has a point.

The new Label display is nice, but I did like the right side labels, because it left room on the left for Calender, and other gadgets, which I now have to scroll down to see.

For me it is not so great a problem, but it is a shame that I cannot now see all of my labels at a glance, and my Calender.

For Colin and others who use Chat more it is probably more frustrating.  I would suggest that you try Right Side Chat Lab, that still seems to be available, and may improve things for you.

I would prefer not to hide any labels, as my list of them (>100) is
extensive and they are almost all used regularly, as I have many
accounts all forwarding to Gmail (or in my case, Gmail for my
domain). So it really, really irritates me that I can either have all
or some, but I can't have all displayed and be able to collapse the
list at will. Not to mention the fact that now right-side labels are
gone, and I have to scroll a good way down the page to even be able to
click the contacts link.

I am not impressed with this at all.

The drag and drop fuction was an exciting news but if you collapse the label list then it overlaps on the emails and you can't drag emails underneath the label list.....

I've found that if I hover over the "## More" words, the list will expand and I can get to the one I want. What I can't figure out right now is how to color the labels. I don't know where the drop down arrow is that gives the color choices. (Didn't decide to to colors until just now so didn't look into it before this label change took place.

'Custom Label Colours' is a Labs project add-on.
If you go to Labs, scroll down to find Custom Label Colours, enable it
there, then you'll have the option when you get back to normal
'Labels'.
It's a pity that given the amount of re-working that Labels has just
had, that this Labs wasn't introduced fully into the new label
management interface.

It is the light gray square just to the left of each label - if you hover over it an arrow/triangle fades in, and if you click on it, it opens a pop-up for selecting a color. I discovered this accidentally while I was trying to figure out something else.

Colin, you can still collapse  and expand the list at will.

First hide all the labels, then right click on the "down Arrow/triangle" next to the 100 more label and heh presto all the labels are visible.

Its not quite the same but it works fine for me, with 60 plus labels.
