Hi Dodo
Well, when you reboot you will be signed out. You have obviously set
it's preferences to start when Windows starts and sign in
automatically. Perhaps you inadvertently turned off the alerts, I am
not sure how since I am using a Mac, but I'm going to guess
right-click, Preferences, Gmail tab. There should be a setting there
to play a sound and/or enable new message popups.
If that doesn't work, perhaps remove the app (Control panel, Programs
and Features), re-download and install.
Cheers

That's a feature that's been in Gmail a while, but it's not related to
your old notifications. It happens if you're viewing a conversation
and someone sends replies. Gmail makes sure you know that there's a
new message instead of automatically updating the conversation.

Honestly I kinda of have a suspicion that the Gmail Notifier is just
getting too old to work reliably with Gmail. I'm not sure how it
checks for new messages, but the last time it was updated was March
2006 and I know for a fact that they didn't even bother fixing it when
they found out the "Always use HTTPS" lab broke it (HEY! Did you
happen to turn that on?).
I would go ahead and install the Google Talk client
(http://www.google.com/talk/). I just did and verified that it worked
fine for me, so there shouldn't be any problems.

It does do more than the (now very old) Notifier did, but computer
resource wise it's not bad. Yes, it does notifications like you want.
Just uninstall the old Notifier and install Google Talk and it should
basically be good to go with no hassle.
The program Elihu recommended will probably work although I've never
used it. It does have a pretty long feature list though, so it may be
a bit overwhelming to get configured like you want. Worth a try
though.

You can definitely have both running. Give Google Talk a try and then
remove one or the other once you find which one works for you.
Hello again. I wanted to wait and see if the Gmail Notifier "behaved itself" and continued to work. It didn't. Just now I went to the link Ryan provided on Oct. 15. The download didn't start automatically, so I followed the instruction to click where indicated and got a download, and that's all that happened. I was left on the download screen. I have no idea what happened or what to do next. From what Ryan and Elihu wrote, I thought it would be easy. Now what? ~Dodo
Well, you've just downloaded it but now you need to execute (run) it.
Double-click the file in your download window.

OK, just tested it, I don't have sound notifications either. I didn't notice the lack of sound before because I prefer it that way.![]()
