You mean it's a serious flaw that in order to permanently delete an email
from GMail, you have to:
1. Select the email
2. Click the delete button
3. Click some other link so that the big yellow 'undo' link goes away
4. Click the trash link
5. Select the email again
6. Click DELETE FOREVER
There are six steps that have to be taken in order for an email or chat to
be deleted from your trash. How is this a serious matter? If you're too
impulsive and delete things on a whim, then it's your own fault. What did
you think would happen when you clicked "DELETE FOREVER"?
Ah, he was complaining about deleting messages FROM the trash, after having already deleted them once. I missed that.
Nandita, if you didn't understand the meaning of "DELETE FOREVER", please look it up.

Heh. That's a pretty good response, actually. (And I have a lot of respect for anyone who can keep their sense of humor when they are being teased.) So, I am not sure, what did you mean by "deleted from trash" - did you mean that you wanted to be able to restore emails after you deleted them, or did you mean that you had deleted them, and then emptied the trash, and then wanted to restore them? The first one is possible, the second one is not. (I don't know how chat history is handled by Gmail, I got tired of chat in general before Gmail was created.)

I don't know what you mean by 'you people' but you don't know me or anything about me.
This group is a community of people discussing and helping each other with Gmail. You clearly have no idea how to behave in a community as you can't even be bothered to greet, be polite or even type properly so why should anyone bother with you?
The reverse is true as well - you don't know anything about Nandita either. Not everyone has English as their first language so it's dangerous to assume that poor spelling or grammar is the result of laziness or ignorance. The person asking for help might be translating from Chinese, Swahili, or Hindi. I could be wrong, but I got the impression that it was a tongue-in-cheek response to the criticisms of his (or her, it's not like I can see the person through the Internet) English.

Agreed with Sean. You guys are out of line making fun of it. If
someone is clearly using just txt speak or something, that's one
thing, but poor grammar on a world-wide group is not a big deal. The
message was understandable, that's the important part.

Would you expect to be able to recover something you mistakenly threw in a dumpster after the garbage truck has been through? Same idea. Trash is supposed to hold messages you plan to get rid of. Once you empty it, you are stating that you have no intention of even trying to get them back.

This was clearly txt speak, that much is obvious and it is definitely *not* appropriate and will result in flaming on any mailing list. Nandita can also not see us through the Internet but has concluded that we are indeed men, just as I can conclude that she is a woman as Nandita is a girl's name.
This is getting way OT. Point is, txt speak aside, it is unreasonable to expect to recover messages emptied from the trash. -- Marko

"deleted from trash " i meant .....dat mails wer deleted by me frm inbox

Ryan,
I agree they are out of line for making fun of it, but it appears to
me to be clearly txt speak. As you say, this is a world-wide group,
and while broken English can be expected from non-native English
speakers, improper English from native speakers, becomes completely
unreadable for the non-natives. The seems so much like txt speak
because our non-native speakers, typically have proper spelling and
structure at least, since they are learning from a book.
Nandita,
This is a world-wide group, and every attempt should be made at proper
English so users from around the world are able to understand you and
participate in the conversation. While your original message could be
"understood", it did not appear to be an attempt at proper English.
Please try to do better in the future. It will reduce criticism, and
potentially solicit a better response. Personal "style" aside, in a
forum such as this, you have to consider others.

Sorry, but you can't get them back. Once they are deleted forever from the trash (which means you intentionally deleted them TWICE), they are gone, forever. Really.
If you use Windows (or a Mac too, I think), it is similar to deleting a file, then emptying the Recycle bin and scrubbing the space on the disk where it was. It is truly gone for good.
By indicating that you wanted them deleted from the trash, you were telling Google you really do not want those messages anymore and they can delete all record of them.
Unless you have invented a Time Machine to go back in time, there is nothing you or anyone else can do.
On the other hand, if you used POP or IMAP or something else to copy all your emails to your home computer, or if you can contact the people who sent you those emails and ask them to send them again, there might be a way to get them back.
(And I apologize for referring to you as "he" earlier ... I am not very good with names.)

Okay... I'm going to call BS here.
Nandita:
1. I'm happy that txt speak is how you feel most comfortable expressing yourself. However;
2. This is not a teen chat room on AOL, nor is it SMS.
3. If you feel you must use text speak, please ask your Gmail questions in an AOL chat room and not here.
If you can't be bothered to type "that" instead of "dat", or "of" instead of "f", if the group is not worthy of proper English, how can you possibly expect people to want to take the time to help you, let alone understand you?
4. "Everything I learned in BPO"
I'm pretty sure they did not teach you in BPO that it was appropriate to use text speak in email. It's not. It's unprofessional and makes you appear as either naive, ignorant or 14 years old.
Please use proper English or move to an AOL chat room.
5. For anyone here thinking this is a case of a foreign national trying to use English, it's not. See the quote at the top of this message.
