Thanks. Yes, I did check Other Contacts. I also did a search for
duplicates. I'm unable to find the uncapitalized version except when
auto-complete kicks in.

Another possibility - I wonder if this could be the browser's
auto-complete kicking in? If so, when the auto-complete entry shows up, you
should be able to highlight it and delete it.

No, it wasn't the browser's auto-complete. Also, I cleared the cache and
cookies, and that made no difference. (I also tried different browsers.)
What I ended up doing was to make a note elsewhere of the contact info
(including what contact groups the person was in), and then I deleted the
contact entry altogether. I recreated the entry as I wanted it, and all
was as I wished it to be.
So I still don't know how Gmail stored that form of the name that I didn't
like, but at least I know the workaround.
