gmail notifier

Good day,

I notice there are a few extensions for Firefox, as well as standalone
programs out there, that sit in your tray/taskbar and tell you if you
have any new emails in your gmail inbox. Has anyone happened across
one that will show you the *total* of unread emails, instead of just
the ones in the inbox?

But it would also be inteteresting to see label-wise break up. Something like:

Misc (200)
Total Unread = 244

In a single tooltip or popup./

Gmail Agent (http://johnvey.com/features/gmailapi/) shows a label-wise
break up. But not in the popup though but in a window. The popup shows
message preview. Might want to give it a try.

I'll try that. However, I would much rather have an extension for
Firefox just show me the number of unread emails, even without label
breakup. I was using Gmail Notifier by Doron Rosenberg -
http://nexgenmedia.net/extensions/ - but I can't seem to be able to
find a point of contact for him.

I can't get the Gmail notifier to work. It always gives me a "Failed
Login" notice.
If anyone finds a simple one that works, I'd be delighted.

I've been using the one linked to by that website,
http://www.nexgenmedia.net/extensions/gm-notifier/gm-notifier-0_3_3.xpi ,
and it works well. I recall reading somewhere that gmail changed their
login scheme, and 0.3.3 complies with that.

Ah, very interesting. I see it also includes a "gmailto:" setting. But
it still only checks the inbox. If you have filters that make emails
skip the inbox, it doesn't catch them.

Actually, may I ask how did you find that out? I looked all over and
couldn't find a reference to gmail helper. The Google Toolbar page
(under their Labs site) doesn't link to it, and a search on
gmail site:google.com -directory -policy
didn't mention it at all. Just curious, that's all.
As a sidenote, that search did bring up the following two domains that
google probably used/will use :
register.gmail.google.com
beta.gmail.google.com
They don't resolve at the moment, but I have to admit I clicked on
them in a rush when I saw them listed :)

I'll be honest: I have no idea why a notifier is such a boon. If I am
on a computer, I just leave a browser window open to "Gmail". When I
am curious if I have mail, I switch windows.

If I am simply near the PC, I leave the window exposed. The same
glance that can tell me if I have mail with a notifier does the same
thing with the page already accessed.

I do that too. One firefox tab of the 10s open is usually dedicated to
gmail. For me, an optimal notifier would sit in Firefox' status bar
and show me how many unread emails I have (not just the ones in the
inbox). Then I would tab over to gmail. It's just extra
useability..it's not really critical functionality. However, as with
anything gmail/google, people get passionate about it :)

Ah, but this one does show you the unread threads, not the total
contents of the inbox - I like it. It's a bit slow to update after
I've read the threads, but overall so far I like it.

ONe weird thing tho - since I installed it, my 'unread' folder seeems
to be playing up, and showing that I have unread mail when in fact the
folder is empty - it's currently showing 5 unread, and there aren't
actually any there - forced refresh doesn't seem to change it. Anyone
else having this problem?

Yeah, it's not that big of deal... I can just go check it if I want
to. but it does let you know when you have mail when your not
thinking about it. I personally like to check my mail when I have a
few messages because it gives me something to do. I don't neccessarly
like checking them as they come in. That would be like IMing me. =p

Exactly. It shows unread threads as long as they're in the inbox, and
not archived. I tried it again just now: I sent to my gmail account an
email that I knew would stay in the inbox, and one that I knew would
get automatically labelled "X" and archived (ie skip the inbox). All
notifiers told me I had 1 new email, which was the one that was in the
inbox, while disregarding the one that was archived.
Other than that it looks like a promising application. At the moment
it checks every 2 minutes, which is a hard coded setting that will
hopefully change when its final version is out.

Well, it's a toss up. I see reason to skip the inbox, but at the same
time...the app might see it as "it's has been skipped the inbox for a
reason" so, maybe that should be an option... =\

How do you use an XPI file (Mozilla)

It just repeatedly asks me to save or open..

If I 'open' it - It repeats the message to save/open :(

It should be asking you to install it. XPI files are extension
packages. Make sure your browser allows 3rd party software
installation. I haven't used Mozilla in a long time, so I don't
remember the exact setting for it, but it should be straightforward.

In Firefox : Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Software -> Allow

Yeah, it's very good, the only thing is that it only takes care of the
new mails going to the inbox, not if you have made a filter that
labels them automatically and skips the inbox.

Perhaps I am biased, but I find this program nothing new or great. It
copies features of other programs that have been around much longer,
and doesn't bring anything new to the table.

The google gmail notifier looks like a great program, but I use Windows
ME. Does anyone know if it will work with this system...I know what
google says in their system requirements, but am just wondering if

I would put that as enougth reason to use a 'possibly' inferior
program ... but for sure, one that would *not* break (as & when gmail

useful to have it check archived unread emails too, and today they
replied, only 2 days later (No sarcasm there, it took them weeks,
understandably, to reply to my gmail feedback).

I have no doubt it's a standard email they send out, but if it was
sent automatically, I'd expect it soon after I sent in my feedback.
The way this was sent 2 days after makes me believe someone actually
read my feedback and sent out a canned response. But they read it.
