The only sound is a female voice saying, "Incoming Message". This happens ONCE. If you miss it, there's no further sound. Be sure your sound is turned up enough that you'll be able to hear the msg.

Oh, yeah, I forgot.  I had even checked it in the process of trying to
figure out why the sound wasn't working.  Thanks, Ryan.  ~Dodo

OK, just tested it, I don't have sound notifications either. I didn't notice
the lack of sound before because I prefer it that way. [?]

I'm stunned, Elihu.  After all these posts and my *many* attempts and the
time consumed in trying to resolve this issue, it never occurred to me
that others also might not have sound, particularly because it is one of the
features.  In fact, in your post of 10/27, you wrote:  "You should be able
to get sound."  (Funny that you don't want sound and I do!)  Ryan, if you're
still checking in, would you look at GT on *your* computer and confirm
whether or not you have sound for your incoming e-mails?  Thanks!  ~Dodo

I think I've solved the mystery.
There are actually TWO GMail Notifiers available. If you have a blue
or white envelope icon on your taskbar, there is NO sound. If you have
a red icon, there is, as I said previously, a single announcement;
"Incoming message".
When you download the notifier, you get either Gmail notifier, or
Notifier Installer. Installer gives you the blue or white icon eith no
sound.
GMail Notifier gives you the red icon with the announcement. Check it
out!
