Oh well - man I hate when this happens! Sometime late this afternoon
Gmail started throwing errors when I try to add labels using the MM2
GM script. The Add Label bar appears and hit a key for a label. The
label shows in the bar and then immediately afterward an error message
pops up saying "Couldn’t find the menu header node". The label isn't
added.

I also noticed that the button bar had changed - it is a bleached
white color and they added a "Move To" drop-down. (As if they had
folders instead of labels).

Any hope for a fix? Or are we done? The stupid Labs Keyboard Shortcut
feature still doesn’t allow adding labels - which makes it worthless
IMO.

Thanks!

I take the comment about Labs back - it appears that they did add
lower case "l" to open the Label dropdown. Doesn’t work till you
disable MM2.

"The new changes to gmail today add the ability to label messages as
well. At this point many of the features that this script originally
did are now handled though gmail and it's labs features. I'm wondering
whether it is worth it to keep maintaining it. Thoughts from others
would be appreciated.

I haven't received the latest update to gmail yet, but when I do I'll
take a look at it. Thanks."

I did get a look at the changes tonight. Google changed the way that
the menu bar works and that changed a ton of things. The old method
doesn't look like it's going to work at all, it's not an easy fix. If
someone wants to contribute a fix, sweet, but otherwise I'm going to
see what I can do, but when/if it starts working again I think that it
will basically function more like a macros type script (combining
different actions) since all the primary functions are handled by
official gmail keyboard shortcuts.

At this point, nearly all the functionality of the script has been
subsumed by the new GMail menus -- and in some circumstances it
performs better (no offense, sewpafly, they can cheat :) ). If
they're not working for you (generic you), then uninstall your macros
script and refresh. I think most people should be satisfied with the
new functionality. The interface is fast and clean, and they've
expanded functionality as well -- there's the whole "Move" thing for
people who want their labels to behave more like folders. Most of all
the things people want work (labeling, removing labels, adding new
labels and labeling at the same time, etc.). Before you start
panicking, tinker with it and try to figure it out.

I just wish I was alerted somehow about these changes so that the
first time I see them is NOT when something suddenly stops working.

To be honest, sewpafly, I'd reserve your effort for other tasks and
stop supporting these scripts. If there are holdouts, I'd let them
fend for themselves. :)

It looks like we might be able to get by with the built-in shortcuts
(and a sprinkling of Labs features), they just don't work as slickly
as Modified Macros.
My major usage of keyboard macros tends to be "Goto Label" (the Labs
feature works pretty well so far), and then selecting unread messages
and marking them as read. This last one is a bit tricky without MM
(which was simply the comma shortcut)...I changed the "select all
unread" shortcut to *u and that seems to work fine. However, "mr" is
listed as mark all read, but this doesn't seem to work. I'm using . +
down arrow + enter at the moment, but that'll get old quick. I'll have
to play with it a bit more to see if there is some kind of conflict.

Sewpafly,

As I mentioned in my followup post - and as others have commented -
the new Google shortcut seems to be working fine. I hadn't seen that
before my first post - Google doesn't exactly say what they changed;
instead you have to go looking at blogs to find out.

I agree that you should devote your time to other tasks - like a well-
deserved vacation!

Thanks!

I disagree. If you're one of the earliest receivers of a new
"feature" like this, it's possible you miss the information, but at
some point in the deployment, there's almost always a link to the
"What's New" section of the Help Center. It's also available so you
can go to it yourself.

I, for example, only got that change today, and my top bar (right
after my GMail name) has a link to the Help Center briefly describing
the change "Do more with labels!". I had looked it up and read it a
few days ago though, as I'd seen rumor talking about it. It reads the
same today as it did then. The Blogs tend to be better information,
but GMail itself is not devoid of information.
