I would say to start with Mihai's original GMail macro script and then
determine what you do/don't like about it. Usually it is just a keystoke or
two that need personal tweaking. Try out the other versions that are stored
at this group's webpage to see if they are closer to what you want. Once you
find the one that is closest, people on this list can probably help you
tweak it just right.
So, while there isn't a definitive version (although I would say that
Mihai's version is the definitive version, with all others as tweaks to the
original) there are plenty of options so you can fine tune your GMail usage
just the way you like it.
Personally, Mihai's latest version has added in all of the stuff that I had
pulled from various versions of the script, so I am just using his right
now. I'm still getting used to some of the new key strokes (and may need to
modify a couple of those).
