All that Archive does is to remove the inbox label
applied to a message, so that it no longer shows in
the inbox display.
You can use the Lab experiment to add the
'Mark as read' button to your display, and then click
on Archive - but unless you add your own label, finding
messages which you've simply archived is very difficult,
since there is no Archived label to use in the search!!

With my setup, I always want email marked as read when archiving. I go back at my weekly review and do this manually.
An option under "Labels" or "General" that could be enabled via a labs project giving an option to enable this globally would be great.
Google mail checker extension for Chrome (and possibly others) has this feature, and I love it.
It's not for everyone, but then again, that's why labs are here.
