I suspect that the majority of people with multiple accounts, or
accounts read through GMail with POP3/IMAP, do so because they have
different accounts for different things, e.g. Personal, Work,
University, webmaster etc.

For example, I have my personal address and my university address
(POP3). Would it be possible to set up a system much like the current
filters for incoming messages, whereby you choose criteria about your
outgoing message, upon which to base the automatic selection of the
'from' address.

For example, I could set up account so that whenever I send an email
to a member of the university staff it would automatically use the
university address, and anything else goes from my personal address.
The same could be done for people sending a message with their
'webmaster' hat on- any mention of their website in the subject of
their message would automatically select their webmaster address to
send from. And so on.

The problem would arise if there was a clash of two different sets of
criteria in the same message (solvable by having a hierarchy of
priority setting), or none (in which case the default would be used).

In my opinion, the most sensible way of designing it would be to keep
the current system's dropdown menu, so that the user can override the
auto-selection, but to allow the above system to select items from
that drop-down as you are typing the email.

Yes, I agree, I am really looking forward having this feature too !
The 'from' address could also be determined by a 'prefered sender
email' field in a group or contact form.

The only features 'kinda' like this that exists now, is use the same
address that have been used when replying. This should also work when
I'm initiating a thread !

I just want emails sent to an em...@xyz.edu to be sent from my
@xyx.edu email account. I keep forgetting to switch from address when
sending school emails.

I agree. I have a number of accounts that I use on gmail. It would be nice for gmail to propose an address to send "from" based on the recipients of the message I am replying to. So, if the message I am replying to was not sent to my gmail address but to an address that I forward to gmail (myad...@mycustomdomain.info), gmail would propose that I send "from" myad...@mycustomdomain.info instead. The desired behavior would be to automatically default to selection mode (so that if that's not actually the address I want to send from, I can change it). A plus would be to put some sort of flag up there to visually alert that the from address has been auto-selected.

In particular, I see this as being a highly valuable feature for university students that have email forwarded to gmail. They would then be able to seemlessly ensure that they are sending as their university address rather than their gmail address.

Definitely, with my school addresses, I want it to automatically select my From: mye...@myschooldomain.com when I send an email to anyt...@myschooldomain.com...

just it has to be designed in a way so you create which ones it responds to
