I would like the ability to hide select labels from the Labels bar on
the left. The hidden labels still exist, and you should be able to
search, filter, view the labels -- except in the Labels bar. This
should be similar to how you can hide/show calendars in Google
Calendar.

For example, let's say I have a thousand emails labeled for my current
job, and I get another job someplace -- I don't want to remove that
label from all those emails... but I no longer need to see that label
in the left-hand Labels bar.

Thanks!

We don't really get what you mean... at least, for me

He/she wants to shorten the label list by removing some from view (but
having them remain accessible).

Was about to add this feature, then I saw you already have.

I completely agree on this feature, it needs to be implemented!

Also, when you access gmail over IMAP, some clients create a bunch of
folders (which show up as labels) on their own.

I have a similar request that would probably be implemented in the
same feature. I want to have the ability to hide the labels from view
in the inbox so I can see the whole subject if there are a lot of
labels applied to the message. It could either be that they are
hidden when they are selected as hidden, or an option to toggle the
visibility of the labels in the inbox all together.

+1 for this idea, I have an increasing number of labels from old
projects taking up screen real estate. A feature to hide labels and
put them under a 'more' menu/link would be excelent

Thanks

Ditto. Add another vote for this feature.
Thanks.

Yes!! please!

I would like to make more labels, but only if it means I wouldn't
clutter my label links. Have a short/quick label list, then an
expandable Labels drop down or other feature.

I would include another feature:
The option to show only labels with Unread messages !

One more vote for this feature.
I came to add this suggestion and it was already created (as
always :). I need to see a shorter label list but remaining the rest
of labels applied.

Thanks!

I came here to suggest this exact feature.

I have lots of old projects with relevant lables. Not using these
lables anymore doesn't mean that they have lost their relevance or
usefulness.

I would really like to see only "active" lables, so that my lables-
list won't be so cluttered with non-relevant information. (I can
access these by searching, og maybe by a "show all" option in the
list).

I can think of two possible solutions to this; 1) only show lables
with unread messages (as Mussum suggested), or; 2) only show "non-
hidden" lables (as has also been sugested here before). The
combination of these two will let you hide even labels with unread
messages, but these are anyways easily accessible trough some simple
searches.

I urgently need this for my own email, as well as for the email of two
NGO's I'm in that use Gmail for their common administration.

Thanks!
