A task box in a side bar while in email

It would be wonderful to have a box where tasks could be added -as a sort of dashboard item. I frequently receive emails that require several tasks be accomplished before I can reply to an email, or several tasks / steps must be accomplished before notifying several people not previously included in the original correspondence. Those tasks that are completed could be removed, while those that must still be accomplished remain on the list.
