We are disabling the 'SMS in Chat' lab because of some issues with
this lab that would affect normal Gmail use. We're working on getting
this resolved and appreciate your patience.
Please remember, Labs may break or disappear at any time or they may
work so well that they graduate from Labs and become regular features.
Thanks for your understanding.

I really hope this comes back as soon as possible >< i use this every
day.It dose anoy me that it gose down at a time i need it.Now i need
to find away to message my gf in the hospital -.-...
Just curious, what the hell does no job=no celly mean? And how does it
relate to gmail sms? If it has something to do with your livelihood
relating to your ability to send SMS's from the web, there are other
pay services available that allow you to do just that, silent killer!

I hope this is fixed soon. Since the addition of Text Chat it has
become a great resource and tool for me. At home, on the road and at
work. Especially at work, the ability to send an receive texts has
become a staple for me. I use the service along with Google chat to
the extent where i have 5 plus chat tabs open. I communicate with
partners, colleagues, family and potential business leads through
GMAIL and Google Chat/SMS. I do hope it is resolved soon. Thank you
for the service.
Maybe it can be pulled out of beta soon and made a part of GMail.

I have to agree with Michael B*984, you cant look a gift horse in the
mouth... To be able to send Texts from Gmail is truly a great asset
and one we should not take for granted.

I just found it yesterday browsing the labs and now it's gone this
morning :( Hopefully it will be back soon.
About the only issue I have with it is the rather tedious number of
precise clicks to get to the SMS option, especially if you have a lot
of contact info (phone and e-mail) for a particular contact. It would
be better if they could just add custom 'buttons' for these new lab
functions. Just an SMS button that opened a window with a TO field or
something.

There are also free gateway services out there that automatically
route your messages to the proper sms gateway but they tend to be
rather fly by night. Just search Google for them.

It's a great feature, love to have it back. Didn't realize how much I
use it until it was gone... I actually had got rid of my text
messaging package on my phone because I didn't use it anymore since I
had the ability to do the same thing on Gmail.

WTH? How do you view this as a gift horse? This feature is a part of
their service. You do realize you can send sms with other emails these
days? Geez, people. Don't spaz as though Google is God!! It's just a
SERVICE provider. Get it together!

Please tell us another email service where you can send SMS through
chat format. I don't know of any. I know you can through MSN Live
and Yahoo messenger, but those are not email services.

FYI you can send SMS to [virtually] any phone from any e-mail account.
Each phone has its own e-mail address which is based on the number
itself. This site has information on how to convert a phone number
into an e-mail address
