Here are the steps to use this lab feature:
(1) Go to the Settings | Labs page to enable Superstars.
(2) Go to the Settings | General page to select which superstars to
use and what order they should rotate through. (Note: While you're
here, you may also want to turn on keyboard shortcuts for easier use
of superstars.)
(3) Now to actually apply superstars from the list view or the
conversation view, you have two options:
(a) If you have keyboard shortcuts turned on, you can hit the "s" key
successively to rotate through the superstars you selected.
(b) Alternatively, you can click successively on the conversation or
message's star icon location to rotate through them.
(4) You can search for your superstars using "has:" with the
superstar's name, which can be found by going to the Settings |
General page and hovering the mouse over each superstar icon. For
example, you can search for "has:blue-star", "has:red-bang", or
"has:orange-guillemet".
Minor notes:
~ Rotating through the superstars only works when you click (or hit
"s") successively. If you pause for a couple of seconds, then the
next click will turn off the superstar. It's designed this way so
that if you never click successively, then you'll just get the
original on/off toggle behavior.
~ When you search for "has:yellow-star", only the new yellow-star
superstar will be found. The other yellow star (the original star)
will not be found. We may add the original star to the list of
superstars at some point, but until then, you'll have to use
"is:starred" to search for the original star.
You apparently suffer from chronic DM (Developer Myopia), which is
common among developers.
Your explanation is grossly inadequate (and you cannot fix it due to
your chronic DM condition).
You know to much and are to close to (and to familiar with) SS to
(easily) figure out how to convey its installation, functionality and
(suggested) utilization to Newbies.
SS is also (1) conceptually great, (2) functionally flawed and (3)
essentially unusable in its present form.
I will assist you in resolving functionality issues (by using it and
reporting back to you, interactively, if you elect to improve it).
I will also write appropriate documentation covering installation, use
and application(s) (from an unfamiliar outsider's frame of reference),
if you wish.
Please advise if you accept my offer. I cannot bring myself to stuff
my detailed thoughts, uninvited, into a forum black hole, with a low
anticipated level of response (feedback).

Great stuff. Would be nice if one could learn the names of the stars
from the inbox. I'm in Chrome, and pointing at a, say, red-star
doesn't show the text. (So, I'll have to go aaalll the way to settings
to learn - what a hazzle :))
