I recently got an email in my inbox that wasn't even addressed to me.
It wasn't even in a language I speak. Its the only one, and it arrived
a day or two ago. Since it seems to be a personal email, and not
commercial spam, it really has my curiosity picqued as to how it got
here. Any guesses?

Check the BC field.

And you can check the BC field by looking at the email's source.

its a common spam tactic, one fake address in the TO: then everyone else in the BCC: field.. you can also fake the TO: and other trickery.. SMTP wasn't really designed for secuirty in mind or spam..

Did it happen to be in Chinese and contain the numbers 126 in it?

it's a common misconception that an email has to be addressed to you
for you to recieve it... it's only half-true

1) what you see in your email reader is what's written in the
headers... while most of the time that is the real information,
someone sending an email can fake headers and then instruct the email
server to send the email somewhere totally different... email servers
do NOT use header information for sending the email

2) you may have been added to the BCC field (blind carbon copy)... it
functions the same way as CC (carbon copy), except the email isn't
inserted into the headers... it's a cool way to send an angry email to
some company and forward it to your friends at the same time... you
wouldn't want the company to know who else got the email..

Some big powerful company (or coalition of companies, Microsoft, IBM, Google, Yahoo would work) needs to design and build a new SMTP standard (that remains backwards compatible for the initial release periods, say 2-3 years). The new standard would be built to be more anti-spam and abuse proof. The current SMTP standard is older then dirt and has definitely reached the end of its life.

Scott are you talking about clicking the "Show Original" button? I
could find nothing else that would suggest to me what you were trying
to do. At any rate, there were no CC or BCC's in the "source," if
indeed that's what I was looking at.

No Chinese or those numbers. A totally uneducated guess, but looks to
me like a south-east European language (maybe Turkish).

Kass Lloyd (raeky), it wasn't spam. No effort to sell me viagra, get
me to gamble on their site, or look for available partners. It was to
all intents and purposes, a personal email

Can I suggest you post the email under text format, maybe somebody in
this group speaks that language and can help you to find out.

It is OK with me if you guys want to continue this topic, if you do it
in the Lounge instead.
