Hello all!

There are passing mentions of importing xml data into Glossword, but
what about Excel/Access. Can this be done and how? I have a corpus of
about 12,000 words that I am looking to import.

Can anyone point me in the right direction, please???

You can save Excel files in .XML format. Can't you?

The option exists, yes, but I do not know how to do it. When saving a
document, Excel 2007 prompts for xml maps, which I do not know how to
prepare...yet. I am learning. Another problem is that my data is in
UTF-8 format, which, surprisingly, Excel 2007 is having trouble with.

I have tried to import using csv files, after going via Open Office
Calc, and from there into a Notepad csv file. The problem there is
that all the data ends up in the "term" field in the Glossword
dictionary, no matter what I do... KB article KB1875151697 does not
have all the instructions I need to do the job...

Grateful for any assistance. Thanks.

Well, I have never needed that feature, so I've googled for 'save
Excel 2007 xml format' and I've got many many results, even official
help pages from Microsoft.
Then I've searched the Excel help for XML and got two result pages
where one of the matches reads 'XML for beginners'.
As for the Glossword XML schema, it can be seen in the control panel
if you go to Terms / Import.
I hope this helps.

I did it with thousands of words. I had to setup a CSV file, if
memory serves me well. You may want to look at my discussions with
the original author of Glossword, here:

@Sharon

No matter what I do, all the data falls into the Term field.

I took my Excel (2003) spreadsheet and cleaned it up, taking out all
the commas, and all slashes and question marks and parentheses etc..
Then I made sure Excel recognized the data in both columns as text.
Then I justified correctly (one of my languages is RTL). Then I opened
the file in Open Office Calc and Saved As .csv with UTF-8, keeping the
comma as my delimiter, and removing the quotes around the data.

I just have two columns of data, one in Hebrew (with nikkud = full
vowel pointing, which helps in reading the word) and the other in
English. I want the Hebrew to fall into the Term field and the English
into the Translation field.

First time though I got both Hebrew and English in the Term field.

Then I redid the spreadsheet and reorganized so that what I wanted to
fall in the Term field was in column 1 (columns started with 0 as per
KB1875151697), and I wanted the Hebrew to be put in the Transcription
field as well, and then my English in column 9 destined for the
Abbreviation field.

Still, everything falls into the Term field, this time with lots more
commas.

However, everything displays wonderfully in Hebrew with vowel pointers
and all. It looks great there.

On a separate note, is there a way to bulk remove all the data that
falls into the Alphabetic tool bar fields. And if I remove everything,
will the terms just alphabetize in the Unicode order. Or are these
fields required somehow???
