Major headlines

Indian indices
Listless session ended on a flat note amid range bound trade, as investors remained cautious ahead of Infosys second quarter earnings and IIP data with Sensex and Nifty surpassing 20,300 and 6,000 mark, respectively.

Benchmark share indices opened flat with a downwards bias a day before IT giant Infosys kicks off the second earnings results. Markets were marginally down in late morning trades weighed down by profit taking in private banks and index heavyweight Reliance Industries. However, the broader markets outperformed the benchmark indices as investors shifted stance to quality mid-cap stocks. However, markets recovered from the lows of the day as buying in auto majors like Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Motors capped losses in the noon deals.

On currency front, the rupee recovered early losses to trade up by 11 paise at 61.79 against the dollar at the interbank foreign exchange due to thin dollar demand.

The broader markets outperformed the benchmark indices. The BSE Midcap index rose 0.59%, while the BSE Smallcap index gained 0.70% in trade today. The S&P BSE Sensex hit an intraday high of 20,323.77 and the Nifty hit day's high of 6033.95.
