Post-market: Bears backfire; Weak Q3 nos weigh on domestic bourses

Bears backfire; Weak Q3 nos weigh on domestic bourses 
Indian shares posted their biggest drop in one-and-a-half weeks as Cipla and Coal India slumped following disappointing earnings, while other blue chips tracked weaker global markets. The BSE Sensex fell 1.25% and NSE Nifty was down by 1.46%.

Indian Indices:
Benchmarks snapped three day winning streak as investors booked profits at higher levels. Weakness in Asia and Europe dragged domestic benchmark share indices with banking and financial stocks leading the decline. Broader markets fell in line with its benchmark indices. The BSE Midcap index fell 0.83%, while the BSE Smallcap index declined 1.05% in trade today.

Indices pared their opening gains with drug major Cipla declining by more than 7% due to dismal performance in its third quarter earnings. Weak Asian cues also caused the benchmark indices to extend their losses on Thursday. Markets traded in the negative territory led by losses in financials weighed on the indices with the HDFC twins leading the downfall.

The Sensex closed at 20193.35, down by 255.14 points, while the Nifty was down 82.90 points to close at 6001.10.

Following are the stocks/sectors which were in news today:

  • Tata Motors ended with mild losses after the company's British luxury car unit Jaguar Land Rover reported 12% rise in sales to 39,106 vehicles in January 2014 from January 2013.

  • GE Shipping jumped 1.23%, touching to Rs383.40, after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) allowed the company to increase its foreign institutional investor (FII) limit.

  • Tata Communications rose 3.85% after consolidated net profit declined 54.56% to Rs36.51 crore on 0.02% growth in net sales to Rs4953.65 crore in Q3 December 2013 over Q2 September 2013. 

Market sentiment
The market breadth stood in favor of declines. Of the 2736 stocks traded on the BSE, 901 (32.93%) rose, 1687 (61.66%) fell and 148 (5.41%) stocks remained unchanged.

Sectoral & stock screening
All the sectoral indices closed in the red zone except S&P BSE Realty which was up by 0.39%. Top Losers- S&P BSE PSU was down by 2.50%, S&P BSE Bankex fell 2.11% and S&P BSE Capital Goods slipped 2.06%.

Among 'A' group stocks, top three gainers were- Eicher Motors rose by 8.81%, Future Retail up by 3.31% and Godrej Consumer surged by 2.53%. Top three losers were- Muthoot Finance slipped by 7.88%, Cipla down by 7.70% and BoB fell by 5.36%



Global signals
US stock index futures poised for a lower opening at the Wall Street on Thursday.

European shares inched lower in early trade on Thursday, halting their week-long rally, with Nestle falling after warning about its sales outlook.

Asian shares stepped back from three-week highs on Thursday, snapping a five-session winning streak that was underpinned by receding concerns about global growth prospects and reassurance over U.S. monetary policy.
