  • 17" alloy wheels
  • Aria 4x2 range will be available in 3 trim levels - Aria Prestige, Aria Pleasure and Aria Pure

Tata Motors today launched the Tata Aria 4x2, a luxurious creation with the finesse of a sedan and the muscle of an SUV all combined in one car with 4x2 option.

The Tata Aria is already available in four-wheel drive, launched in October 2010. The Tata Aria 4x2 extends the range to new segments and redefines several benchmarks with its design and technologies, offering class leading features that take comfort, and convenience to a new height.

Launching the Tata Aria 4x2, Mr. P M Telang, Managing Director - India Operations, Tata Motors said, "As the first Indian 4x4 crossover, the Tata Aria has broken a new path for Tata Motors. With the introduction of the Aria 4x2, we make the range comprehensive. The pleasure of the Aria, combining the finesse of a sedan with the muscle of an SUV, can now be availed by a larger customer segment."

Finesse of a sedan in the Tata Aria 4x2

The Aria's styling is a blend of bold proportions, uncluttered lines and uncompromising aesthetics. The aggressive, well planted stance is tempered by a lunging silhouette and a dynamic roofline. Wraparound dual barreled headlamps complement the signature Tata grille. Chrome detailing on the sides accentuates its premium class. The interiors reflect the same richness and elegance in design, layout, and visual appeal. Premium leather upholstery enhances richly textured trims in single or dual tone themes. Air-conditioning louvers on pillars and a sweeping row of roof utility spaces add to the distinctive appeal.

Passengers can simply walk into the Aria, rather than having to climb up or get down into the cabin. The three-row theatre style flexible seating ensures ample space. Like the driver's and the front passenger seat, the second row seats can also be slid fore and aft to increase legroom. Both the second row and third row seats can be fully collapsed to make the car even roomier for accessories and luggage for that weekend sojourn.

The height-adjustable driver's seat and the tilt adjustable steering help configure the most comfortable driving position. The glasshouse offers commanding visibility, aided by electrically adjustable ORVMs. There is no need to look back even to park - a Reverse Guide System helps you with exactitude. The Driver Information System continuously indicates essential drive data, the Automatic Climate Control, through roof-mounted AC vents, keeps the cabin temperature ambient. The 2-DIN music system and Bluetooth, along with steering mounted phone and music controls, helps switch between music and conversation at the touch of a button. Other features do not even require raising a finger - Darkness Sensing Lights will come on automatically, as will Rain Sensing Wipers. Roof utility bins, a glove-box chiller and conveniently placed cup holders helps keep every thing you want within easy reach.

Muscle of an SUV in the Tata Aria 4x2
The Aria's stylish design is inlaid with the DNA of an SUV, manifested in its stance, power, driveability and safety.

Its 2.2 litre Direct Injection Common Rail (DICOR) engine, with variable turbine technology and 32-bit ECU delivers 140 PS power and 320 Nm torque. It is equipped with a dual mass flywheel which isolates torsional vibrations from the powertrain, thus providing a NVH free environment in the cabin. The new Mark II gearbox is perfectly mated to the engine ensuring smooth power delivery and precise shifting.

The suspension is designed to achieve an optimal balance between ride comfort and control and stability, both on normal roads and in offroading. Its low-roll characteristics and higher soaking capacity further ensure a sedan-like ride quality and SUV-like offroading capability.

The Aria boasts of best in class safety features, making it one of the safest cars on Indian roads. The Aria's frame is constructed with advanced hydroformed members. Hydroforming enhances their rigidity while reducing weight. Besides, the body shell has crumple zones and the doors have side impact bars. Dual airbags (driver, front passenger) ensure complete safety. Besides India, the Aria satisfies all current crash safety norms in European markets.

The Aria is equipped with disc brakes on all four wheels resulting in superior braking effectiveness and better control. The Antilock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Breakforce Distribution (EBD) aids steerability and control in emergency braking situations and on slippery surfaces.

The Tata Aria 4x2 variants
The Tata Aria 4x2 is being launched in three trim levels - the Aria Prestige at the top end, the Aria Pleasure and the Aria Pure.

The Tata Aria 4x2 range will be available from Rs. 11.61 lakh onwards (ex-showroom, New Delhi). The Tata Aria range along with the 4x2 range is being made available, in 85 cities through 150 Showrooms in phase 1.

Tata Motors First-Quarter Profit Misses Estimates as Jaguar Sales Decline

By Siddharth Philip - Aug 12, 2011 10:42 AM GMT+0530

  • in

Tata Motors Ltd. (TTMT) first-quarter profit missed analysts’ estimates as the owner of Jaguar Land Rover reported sales of its passenger cars in India fell and Jaguar deliveries declined.

Net income rose to 20 billion rupees ($441 million) in the three months ended June 30 from 19.9 billion rupees a year earlier, according to a statement from the Mumbai-based automaker yesterday. Profit lagged behind the 21.6 billion-rupee median of 32 analysts’ estimates compiled by Bloomberg. Sales increased 24 percent to 333.9 billion rupees.

Jaguar unit sales declined 27 percent in the period from a year-earlier, while Tata Motors posted an 8.5 percent drop in Indian passenger vehicle sales in the quarter as rising interest rates damped demand in a country where about 80 percent of purchases are funded by loans. The Jaguar Land Rover unit, bought by Tata Motors in 2008, is planning to introduce new vehicles to compete for a bigger share of the high-end segment.

“The main issue in the earnings was the performance of Jaguar Land Rover,” said Walter Rossini, who helps manage about $300 million in Indian assets at Aletti Gestielle SGR SpA in Milan. “Probably the market overestimated the strength of Jaguar Land Rover on the basis of the performance of other luxury brands.”

Trailing BMW

Sales of Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles rose 5 percent in the quarter, compared with 15 percent for Bayerische Motoren Werke AG and 4.4 percent for Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz.

Tata Motors shares declined as much as 4.4 percent to 812 rupees, and were trading at 814.85 rupees as of 10:39 a.m. in Mumbai. The benchmark Sensitive Index of the Bombay Stock Exchange was little changed.

The company’s compact Range Rover Evoque, which goes on sale in September, has received about 18,000 bookings, Tata Motors said in the statement. The company plans to introduce a 2.2 liter, diesel Jaguar XF by the end of this year.

“Everyone is looking at the Evoque and also at the product launches from Jaguar that will help increase sales,” said Juergen Maier, who helps manage about $1.2 billion of emerging- market shares, including Indian stocks, at Raiffeisen Capital Management in Vienna.

Jaguar, the 76-year-old British luxury-car brand, aims to challenge BMW with a hybrid supercar and an entry-level sedan to compete with the 3-Series. The new models are part of Tata’s plans to invest 1.5 billion pounds ($2.4 billion) annually in product development at Jaguar and sister brand Land Rover over the next five years.

‘Exceptional Products’

“We continue to see strong performances in key markets such as China and Russia and very soon we will have some exceptional new product offerings,” Ralf Speth, chief executive officer at Jaguar Land Rover, said in an e-mailed statement yesterday.

Tata Motors is turning to the British luxury brands, which it purchased from Ford Motor Co., for growth and to drive international ambitions. The Jaguar Land Rover unit, based in Gaydon, England, generated 57 percent of Tata Motors’ revenue for the year ended March 31, up from 53 percent a year earlier.

Higher costs and impact of exchange rates resulted in a reduction in the operating margin at Jaguar Land Rover to 15.1 percent in the quarter from 15.4 a year ago, the company said. Profit after tax declined 3.1 percent to 219 million pounds ($355 million).

The company plans to tap growing demand for luxury cars in China with more than 100 Jaguar and Land Rover dealerships by the end of this year, the automaker said in an investor presentation on its website.

Jaguar Sales Fall

Land Rover deliveries for the quarter through June rose 16 percent to 50,747 vehicles. Jaguar’s sales fell to 11,343 cars in the quarter. Tata Motors passenger vehicle sales in India declined to 76,176 units, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers.

Raw material costs rose 37 percent to 203.9 billion rupees, the company said. Commodity prices continue to impact profit margins, Chief Financial Officer C. Ramakrishnan said at a news conference in Mumbai yesterday.

Industrywide car sales in India fell in July from a year earlier, the first monthly decline since January 2009. The nation’s central bank has raised key interest rates 1.75 percentage points this year to rein in inflation.

Last month, the industry group reduced the growth target for car sales in the country to about 12 percent in the financial year that began April 1 from an earlier expectation of an increase of as much as 18 percent.

The automaker sold 21,979 Nano minicars in the quarter and exported 825 in April, according to data from the industry group. The company began exports of the Nano to Nepal and Sri Lanka in the quarter.

Tata Motors will set up 300 dealerships to sell the Nano in the year to March 31, Vice President R. Ramakrishnan said on Aug. 2, after sales declined 64 percent in July from a year earlier.

Tata Motors Said to Hire State Bank to Raise $500 Million Loan From Banks

Q
By Katrina Nicholas - Aug 31, 2011 9:46 AM GMT+05

Tata Motors Ltd. (TTMT), the Indian owner of Jaguar Land Rover, hired State Bank of India to help it borrow $500 million in a term loan, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The two-part facility consists of a $200 million portion which matures in five years and a $300 million portion which matures in seven, the person said, asking not to be identified as details are private.

Lenders committing $20 million or more to the five-year loan will receive margin and fees for a so-called all-in payment of 260 basis points more than the London interbank offered rate while those contributing that amount or more to the seven-year facility will receive a rate of 280 basis points more than Libor, the person said. Tata Motors will use the proceeds for general corporate purposes, the person said.

Meetings to market the loan to other lenders will be held in Taipei on Sept. 5, Singapore on Sept. 6 and London on Sept. 21, the person said. Other meetings may also be arranged in Dubai, the person said.

State Bank of India (SBIN) expects to complete syndication in mid October and Tata Motors will likely sign the loan later that month, the person said.

Auto shares in demand on good rains

Six auto shares rose by 0.8% to 2.79% at 12:20 IST on BSE as good monsoon rains raised hopes of increased demand from rural sector.

The BSE Auto index outperformed the market over the past one month until 25 August 2011, falling 9.76% compared with the Sensex's 14.44% fall. The BSE Auto index had also outperformed the market in past one quarter, sliding 9.19% as against 9.53% decline in the Sensex.

The near-term prospects for agricultural sector remain good. The rainfall deficit in the country had widened to 5% of the long-term average in July 2011, but a pick-up in August 2011 helped narrow the deficit to 1% by 24 August 2011. Good rains will help boost rural incomes, which in turn may boost sales of two-wheelers, tractors and utility vehicles and cars.

There is also expectation of pick-up in sales of two-wheeler, cars and utility vehicles during the upcoming festive season. The festive season starts with Onam early next month and will last until Diwali, the festival of lights, at the end of October 2011.

Ratan Tata's Letter to Shareholders from AR :

Dear Shareholder,

In 2010, the world as a whole continued on a path of moderate economic recovery, but with dramatic differences between major geographic regions.
In the western hemisphere, the U.S. showed distinct signs of GDP growth at 2.8% in 2010, although job levels and home mortgage figures did not improve. Western Europe and the U.K. were marginally positive at 2% and 1.3% respectively. In striking contrast, Asia registered a growth rate of 9.5% led by China and India at 10.3% and 8.5% respectively. In Latin America, Brazil registered a robust growth of 7.5% and South Africa registered a very respectable growth rate of 2.8%.

The figures of growth and economic activity re-affirm that the hub of sustained economic growth has shifted from the developed nations in North  America, Western Europe and the U.K., to the newly-developed and developing countries in Asia, Latin America and Africa, where the domestic market demand for goods and services is increasing, where the cost of skilled labor is low, and where newer production facilities are not burdened with high legacy costs. Further, the astronomical rise in natural resources has given some of the resource-rich nations in the developing world a new-found position of global dominance in sourcing to the developed manufacturers of the west. Whatever may be one’s future view, one would have to accept that investments in new technologies, manufacturing facilities and skills development will most likely be in that part of the world where large
population-driven markets have developed, and that more and more highly competitive goods and services will emanate from such locations for export to the established markets of the developed world. As boundaries and barriers become less meaningful, skilled labor, research and development and supporting infrastructure will tend to be relocated in these new emerging locations in Asia and Latin America.

A good example of these recent global shifts is the case of passenger cars. In 1955 the United States was undisputedly the largest manufacturer of automobiles. It produced 7.1 million cars ~70% of world consumption. Detroit was the center for most important new automotive technologies in terms of new features, new materials, process and manufacturing innovations. By 1960, the U.S. ceded its technical dominance to the European carmakers
which could develop and deliver more attractive cars of higher quality at competitive prices. By 1980, Japan and later South Korea became serious competitors to the Europeans and began to take a larger share of the U.S. market by producing more appealing, higher quality and technically innovative cars at competitive prices. The landscape in 2010 has dramatically changed again! China has emerged as the world’s largest automobile producer. Its production of 13.8 million cars in 2010 accounted for 24% of world production, surpassing the U.S., which produced only 2.7 million cars1 – 5% of the world’s production. Further, China has emerged as the world’s largest domestic market for automobiles (In 2010 Chinese buyers bought about 18 million automobiles, against 11.7 million bought in the U.S.). Even after the economic meltdown in 2009, China and India saw 45% and 26% growth respectively in their domestic automobile markets while Europe, U.K. and the U.S. automobile markets declined by 6%, 11% and 21% respectively.

The global automobile industry production in 2010 stood at about 58 million for passenger cars and about 19 million for commercial vehicles, registering a growth of about 22% and 38% respectively over the previous year.

25 KMPL mileage now on the new Tata Indigo e-CS VX

  • 25 kmpl mileage achieved with five technological advancements
  • New CR4 engine with smart engine management chip
  • Class defining features and new interiors
Tata Motors today launched the Tata Indigo e-CS VX, the most fuel-efficient sedan in the country, with a mileage of 25 kmpl, certified by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI). With a host of other exciting features in the car, the Tata Indigo e-CS VX is a new trim in the Tata Indigo e-CS range.

It sports the all new CR4 Common Rail Diesel engine that has a displacement of 1396 cc delivering 70 PS @ 4000 RPM. With a higher torque of 140 NM at a lower 1800-3000 RPM, improvements in gear ratios, clutch-to-start and reduction in the weight of the car by around 10 kg, the Tata Indigo e-CS VX ensures better pickup.

The Tata Indigo e-CS VX is also available with the MPFi petrol engine. Both these engines are compliant with BS4 emission norms.

This mileage of 25 kmpl in the CR4 Common Rail Diesel engine is hinged on five technological advancements.
  1. SMART EMS (Engine Management System) CHIP that involves perfectly calibrating engine components every micro second to optimise functionality -- right from valve timing to compression ratios, to pressure volume ratios, to air fuel mixture, flawlessly synchronising every engine function to deliver 25 kmpl mileage.
  2. MAXIMUM CHARGE COMBUSTION - An innovatively designed engine head, block and piston assembly that ensures effective intake and circulation of charge (mixture of air and fuel), thereby minimising pumping friction losses. The result is maximum combustion of charge, increased efficiency and power.
  3. DRAG REDUCTION - Redesigned wheel arches and subtle alterations on the exteriors, combined with a lighter shell and engine, have collectively contributed to making the car more aerodynamic, reducing the drag coefficient.
  4. TRANSAXLE (Gear Box) - With optimised Gear ratios to give best fuel efficiency and driveability together.
  5. TYRES - For drag / rolling losses reduction, optimised tyres were developed which provide low rolling losses coupled with good riding comfort and handling.
Other class defining features in the Tata Indigo e-CX VX are stylish R14 alloy wheels, satin finish front grill, headlamps and ORVM with blinkers. They, coupled with body coloured bumpers and chrome inserts on the rub rails, endow it with head turning looks.

The interiors have been enriched with dual-tone beige seating and dashboard, premium wood-finish centre console, new instrument cluster with chrome rings and rear centre armrest for enhanced comfort. The plushness is enhanced with keyless entry, ABS, Bluetooth connectivity and electrical controls for ORVMs, besides carrying forward the comfortable AC, power steering and power windows.

The car comes with a warranty of 18 months and unlimited kms, for private usage.

The Tata Indigo e-CS VX is priced at Rs. 580,339 (ex-showroom Delhi), for the CR4 diesel engine and the Tata Indigo e-CS GVX is priced at Rs. 497,727 (ex-showroom Delhi), for the MPFi petrol engine.

The Tata Indigo CS has dominated the entry mid-size segment in the country for almost 4 years with its proposition of being the most compact sedan in the market. It has been appreciated for its classy styling as much as the great value proposition that it offers at an unbeatable price to a sedan aspirant.

Tata Motors Forced to Search for Chief Executive While Jaguar Sales Plunge

Q
By Siddharth Philip and Steven Rothwell - Sep 12, 2011 9:45 AM GMT+0530

Tata Motors Ltd. (TTMT), owner of the Jaguar and Land Rover brands, is being forced to search for a new chief executive officer as it struggles to revive sales of the luxury sedan amid a worsening debt crisis in Europe.

Carl-Peter Forster, 57, who helped the Jaguar Land Rover unit turn to profit in the year ended March 31, quit on Sept. 9 after less than two years as the global head of India’s biggest automaker citing “unavoidable personal circumstances.”

Forster’s replacement will face the challenge of reversing six straight months of declining sales at Jaguar as economies in Europe stall. Tata Motors, which last year got 35 percent of its revenue from the U.S. and Europe, needs to find a head for the company soon to avoid derailing a plan to invest $2.4 billion annually in new models and expanding into China, according to Deepesh Rathore, managing director for IHS Automotive.

“They are going to be left wondering who is going to replace him,” said Andrew Jackson, an analyst at research firm Datamonitor in London. “This is a big blow really for Jaguar Land Rover. He signed off on a very bold change in direction for the company.”

Prakash Telang, managing director of the company’s Indian operations, and Ralf Speth, chief executive officer of Jaguar Land Rover, will represent their respective units on Tata Motors’ board, according to an e-mailed statement on Sept. 9.

Tata Motors’ shares declined as much as 6.2 percent, and fell 3.8 percent to 147.25 rupees as of 9:41 a.m. in Mumbai. The company’s shares have dropped 44 percent this year, making it the worst performing stock in the BSE India Sensitive Index.

Growth Market

Forster presided over a 20-fold jump in Jaguar Land Rover’s profit before tax in the year ended March 31. He also led Tata Motors plan to tap China, Asia’s largest economy.

China is the No. 1 growth market for Jaguar Land Rover, Forster said in a Bloomberg TV interview in May. Tata Motors is looking for a local partner in China to set up assembly operations in the country, and the company has shortlisted manufacturers, Forster said in a separate interview the same month, without naming any of the potential partners.

Forster wasn’t available for comment, Tata Motors spokesman Debasis Ray said on Sept. 9.

Forster helped by “pulling Jaguar and Land Rover out of the mud and making them profitable,” said Peter Schmidt, managing director of Warwick, England-based Automotive Industry Data. “It will be very, very difficult to replace him in the short term, and possibly in the long term.”

The Jaguar Land Rover unit, based in Gaydon, England, generated 57 percent of Tata Motors’ revenue for the year ended March 31, up from 53 percent a year earlier.

Supercar

The division’s pretax profit surged 20-fold to 1.12 billion pounds for the fiscal year. Jaguar aims to challenge Bayerische Motoren Werke AG with a hybrid supercar and an entry-level sedan to compete with the 3-Series.

The new models are part of Tata’s plans to invest 1.5 billion pounds ($2.4 billion) annually in product development at Jaguar and Land Rover over the next five years. The spending will include 40 new vehicles or upgrades, including the Range Rover Evoque, for which the company has begun deliveries.

Europe’s debt crisis drove a 23 percent decline in Jaguar sales to 4,372 in July, according to a company statement. Almost 25 percent of Jaguar and Land Rover sales come from the U.K., where the economy grew at the slowest pace in the second quarter since it contracted in the first three months of 2010. North America and Europe account for about 22 percent each of sales, according to a company presentation.

Nano Sales

Forster, who was hired in February 2010, will remain as a non-executive member on the company’s board, Mumbai-based Tata Motors said in the statement. The company recruited Forster from General Motors Co. (GM) where he was head of European operations.

Passenger-vehicle sales at Tata Motors slumped 33 percent in August from a year earlier after India’s central bank raised its benchmark interest rate to 8 percent in July, the highest among Asia’s biggest economies.

Deliveries of the Nano, the world’s cheapest car, plunged 85 percent to 1,202 units in August, Tata Motors said in a statement on Sept. 1. The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers said last week it may cut the industry’s sales forecast after economic growth slowed to the lowest in six quarters in the three months ended June.

“I would expect Forster’s position to be filled up in the next two to three months if the company wants to keep their plans on track,” said Rathore.

Tata Motors bought Jaguar Land Rover from Ford Motor Co. in 2008 for $2.5 billion.

Tata Motors Ltd today opposed the Calcutta High Court's initiative on compensation to it for the West Bengal government vesting land at Singur that was leased to the company.

TML counsel S Pal disagreed with the proposal and informed Justice I P Mukerji, who is hearing the TML challenge of the Singur Land Rehabilitation and Development Act 2011, that there was no mention of the leasehold value of the land which could be 500 per cent higher than that of the structure constructed at Singur.

Pal submitted that he had challenged the constitutionality of the act itself and that it could not be mixed up with the question of compensation.

He stated that his right to compensation was a  constitutional right and it could not be taken away by citing the letter of September 28, 2010 or by an act that he claimed violated constitutional provisions.

TML has already taken away all machinery from Singur  to Sanand in Gujarat and set up its Nano car plant there.

The state government, on the other hand, said that the Hooghly district judge would determine the compensation considering the principle laid down under section 23 and 24 of the Land Acquisition Act 1894.

Replying to a directive by Justice Mukerji yesterday that the government spell out whether it was willing to pay compensation to TML, Advocate General Anindya Mitra submitted that it would also consider the structure constructed by TML at its recent market value and also the letter of the company written to WBIDC on September 28, 2010.

In the said letter, TML had said it was willing to leave the 600 acre of leased land at Singur provided it received proper compensation, he stated.

Justice Mukerji observed that though it would be dangerous if the government had the right to acquire any land for industry, but in this case when TML had written a letter stating it was willing to leave the land at Singur if paid proper compensation, then the state was within its right to acquire the land.

He observed that for TML it was not a question of keeping the land but negotiating the amount of compensation that it thought proper.

The matter was adjourned for the day and would be heard again tomorrow.

aguar Land Rover Plc has agreed in principle with China's Chery Automobile to develop a luxury car based on its Jaguar models that may carry a Chery or a new marque in order to win Chinese government approval for a manufacturing venture, a Chinese newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Britain-based JLR, a subsidiary of Tata Motors Ltd, had previously explored cooperations with Chinese partners, including Great Wall Motor Co Ltd, but made little headway.

"The National Development and Reform Commission NDRC.L made it very clear that in order to get approval for the project to go ahead, the two sides must have substantial cooperation, not just adding new capacity," the 21st Century Business Herold said, citing an unnamed source.

The NDRC has the power to approve or block major foreign joint venture projects.

A proposed tie-up between Chery and Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd to make Subaru vehicles in China hit regulatory snags because the deal was ruled to lack substance, according to the source.

The newspaper said a car co-developed by JLR and Chery would carry either a Chery logo or a joint venture logo and the two sides might also collaborate on green vehicles.

Chery and JLR executives could not immediately be reached for comment.

Tata Motors (CMP Rs173, BUY)
JLR robust volume continues in November 2011

Tata Motors JLR sales (wholesale) in November 2011 was up 27% yoy (12% mom) at 29,183 units, led by Land Rover sales, up 38% yoy (14% mom) at 23,868 units and Jaguar sales of 5,315 units, down 5% yoy but up 2% mom.

After two consecutive months of positive yoy sales growth, Jaguar sales declined 5% in November 2011. Land Rover sales were supported by newly launched Evoque. We expect December 2011 to continue upward trend due to successful launch of new models like Evoque and Defender.

JLR reported 19% yoy growth at 185,431 units for 8MFY12 – while sales of Jaguar declined 9% yoy to 35,195 units, those of LandRover increased 28% yoy to 150,236 units. To achieve our forecast for JLR of 275,393 units (up 14%) for FY12, the company needs monthly run rate of 22,321 units for rest of FY12, which we believe is achievable given successful launch of Evoque and rising sales from emerging markets. We also maintain volume forecast for FY13 at 297,425 units (up 8%).

DBI Capital has reiterated `Buy` on Tata Motors with a price target of Rs 204 in its report dated Dec 12, 2011. The broking house gave the following rationale:

> JLR posted strong volumes for November 11, higher than estimates, up 27.1%/11.6% YoY/MoM to 29,183 units (IDBIest 26,000 units).

> Jaguar volumes were down 5.4%/up 1.6% YoY/MoM, to 5,315 units, led by rollout of 2.2 ltr XF in US and Europe and XJL in China. New XF has picked up well, though it is too early to infer any sort of trend in monthly run-rate.

> LR volumes continued to remain strong, up 37.7%/14.1% YoY/MoM to 23,868 units, led by Evoque rollout in US and Europe.

> Similar trend was visible even in volumes of BMW, Mercedes and Audi, with YoY growth ranging from 8-28%.

> In case of BMW, Germany grew by 2.8%, US and Brazil were up 14.8% and 49.0%, while India and Russia grew by 62.6% and 38.8% respectively. Korea and Turkey also registered a healthy growth of 44.0% and 59.7%.

> For Mercedes, Western Europe was down 9.7%, Asia Pacific was up 20.1%, while US was up 47.2%. Japan and China registered a growth of 30.8% and 24.1% respectively.

> For Audi, China was up 68.8% while US and Japan were up 3.6% and 25.9 % respectively. India and Brazil witnessed strong growth of 66.0% and 110.7% while Europe was up 17.8%.

> TTMT management has not seen any signs of slowdown in its fast growing markets like China, Russia, Brazil, Middle East, etc., led by growing aspirations of owning a European car, strong brand pull and relatively immune premium segment. Even US has been holding up well (largely led by restructuring of dealership network and appointing new Head of Sales earlier this fiscal).

> Though impact of slowdown is visible in Europe incl. UK, some improvement is seen led by new launches. Going ahead, the management expects growth to continue, led by China and other emerging markets, while US will remain steady and Europe will be weak. In addition, Evoque and new XF have also started dispatches to China and will gradually be rolled out to other markets, which should aid sustainability in volumes.

> Management expects 300,000 units of volumes for FY12 to be achievable; though it has categorically stated that this is not their guidance but what they feel they have the manned capacity for. (IDBIest 2,85,000 - implying a residual monthly run-rate of 25,000).

Reiterate BUY with price target of Rs 204 (core business-Rs 59; JLR-Rs 130 and subsidiaries-Rs 15).

Tata Motors launches Tata Divo Luxury Coach and Tata Starbus Ultra

Tata Motors today launched the Tata Divo, a luxurious long distance inter-city travel bus and the Tata Starbus Ultra, a modern and practical offering for commuting within the city.

Commenting on the launches, Mr. Ravi Pisharody, President - Commercial Vehicles Business Unit, Tata Motors, said, "Tata Motors has always been at the forefront in revolutionizing passenger transportation in the commercial vehicle segment. With the introduction of the Tata Divo and the Tata Starbus Ultra the company will more comprehensively address the burgeoning need of public transportation. These two buses are sure to migrate the world of passenger transportation to a completely new level of class and technology coupled with comfort and convenience.

Tata Divo Luxury Coach - arrive energized

The brand new luxury AC Coach is meant for inter-city passenger transportation and tourist operations. The Tata Divo body design comes from Hispano Carrocera of Spain, a fully owned subsidiary of Tata Motors, providing a truly international standard ride to the long distance traveler.

The sleek body and the luxurious interiors are a treat to the eye. Tata Divo offers customised interior features such as different seating layouts in semi-sleeper and seater configurations, wide seats with upto 135 degree recline with head flaps and armrests, generous saloon space with high roof, hat-racks with personalised controls for AC and reading lights, large luggage space, making it the ultimate luxurious coach. In addition, an entertainment system with DVD player and 2 LCD screens, on board refrigerator, mobile charging points, destination board, public address system, enhance the travel experience.

The BS III compliant, Tata Divo's drive-train is engineered by 285 HP powerful Cummins engine, a break-through in terms of technology and reliability. Mated with a 6-speed overdrive gearbox for higher fuel efficiency, larger 430 mm diameter clutch for enhanced life, exceptional braking performance with a hydrodynamic retarder, and a superior independent front axle for better maneuverability. All this translates into superior performance.

Driver comfort has been taken to the next level as the bus has a pneumatically suspended seat for more comfort, electronic accelerator pedal and precision gear shifting for minimizing driver fatigue, and a new aesthetic dashboard and instrument cluster with on-board diagnostics.

Tata Divo not only stands for world class design, assured reliability and superior performance, but also spells high on safety. The hydrodynamic retarder ensures better safety and the exceptional aerodynamic drag coefficient increases vehicle stability.

Customers can personalise the Tata Divo by choosing a preferred colour scheme and styling options. The range will be available across all dealerships from January 2012 onwards.

The Tata Divo (BS III version) price range starts from Rs. 66 lakhs, ex-showroom New Delhi.

Tata Starbus Ultra - Go beyond your world

Tata Starbus Ultra opens up a whole new world of comfort and luxury for office-goers, hotel guests, tourists and school children. Meant primarily for intra-city transport, the luxury variant can also be used for inter-city travel.

The Tata Starbus Ultra is available in Luxury, Standard, School and Deluxe variants. These are available in different seating configurations (22 - 46 seater), on different wheelbases, thereby providing the customer with a whole range to select from.

The Tata Starbus Ultra has an outstanding aerodynamic body design and aggregates which conform to the Bus Body Code. The Tata Starbus Ultra is the first bus in its category with the front door ahead of the front axle, resulting in more seats for the same length of bus and subsequently better returns for the operator. The advanced parabolic suspension, wider aisle width and super comfortable seating ensure that commuters have smooth and peaceful ride.

The Tata Starbus Ultra is designed using the reliable Tata 497 engine along with a viscous fan (used for the first time in this class of buses), resulting in higher fuel efficiency and lowest NVH levels in its category. The 6-speed gearbox with overdrive and cable shift mechanism ensures higher mileage, more speed selection options and a higher maximum speed, while also providing 30% more life. The high strength chassis and stronger rear axle enhance the life of the vehicle, while the wider tubeless radial tyres give a longer running life. The service interval has also been doubled for more on road availability and to significantly reduce maintenance costs for the operators.

The wider track axle and lowest in class turning circle diameter help in vehicle stability and maneuverability for the driver. Tiltable and telescopic steering with a high capacity power steering pump, dashboard mounted gear lever with car-like gear shifting leaves reduces driver fatigue.

The luxury variant comes with engine-driven individual AC vents, for each passenger. The modular hat-rack is integrated with AC vents and reading lamps. Push-back seats with upto 135 degree recline with arm-rests and footrests make the travel heavenly. The Deluxe variant has hi-back reclining seats for extra comfort. Rear and side luggage booths give ample space for storage. LCD screen fitment and CD / DVD player provision on request completes the delightful experience. The School variant is equipped with 25 safety features along with all the comfort features for children.

Thus, the Tata Starbus Ultra stands for comfort, space, style and performance with superior economics. The range is available across all Tata Motors Authorised dealerships.

The Tata Starbus Ultra (BS III version) price range starts from Rs.15 lakhs, ex-showroom New Delhi.

Tata Motors upgrading old Nanos with new starter motor

Tata Motors is upgrading old Tata Nanos, produced up to mid-September 2011, with a new starter motor to enhance their performance. This is in line with the company's practice of upgrading its vehicles; on the Nano itself, the company had upgraded the exhaust and the electrical system in November 2010, as was announced then.

The installation of the new starter motor, which is a vendor supplied part, began in October this year. Owners of all old Nanos were informed about the exercise, and about 50,000 cars have already been done. There are about 65,000 owners who are yet to visit their dealerships and the company is in continuous contact with them.

This new starter motor is already installed in the Nano 2012, which was introduced in November this year with a host of new features, of new colours, new interiors, best-in-class AC, a more powerful gasoline engine and even greater fuel efficiency of 25.4 kmpl, further improving on its record as India's most fuel efficient petrol car - all at the same price as before.

Making the Tata Nano even more desirable, the car's 624cc engine has been made more powerful delivering an impressive 38PS of power (earlier 35 PS) and 51Nm of torque (earlier 48 Nm). Yet fuel efficiency, already a high point with Tata Nano owners, has been taken to a new high of 25.4 kmpl (earlier 23.6 kmpl). The ride and handling, also already highly appreciated by existing owners, now has become even better with a revised suspension set-up, including an anti-roll bar at the front, and a steering mechanism made even easier. The interiors are completely new with enhanced premiumness in look and feel - luxurious beige in the Nano LX, rich black in the Nano CX and stunning medium graphite in the Standard version. The exteriors are now a veritable vibgyor of 10 colours, eight of them new. All the variants come with an unmatched warranty of 4 years or 60,000 kms, whichever is earlier.

Tata Motors' customer satisfaction studies with Nano owners indicate that over 90% are delighted with the car, because of it being small yet spacious, its performance, maneuverability, durability, mileage, safety etc. The surveys also demonstrate that the owners deeply treasure their Nanos, resulting in spontaneous suggestions of improvements. Several new features in the Nano 2012 are such insights from the owners.

Tata Motors will continue to add new features to the Nano, even as marketing initiatives, expansion of distribution network and good customer response to the Nano is resulting in a progressive increase in the car's sales.

India is a great SUV market says Land Rover

Land Rover is thinking small to conquer the Indian market. Speaking to CNBC-TV18's Swati Khandelwal Jain, John Edwards, global brand director, Land Rover said, the sport-utility vehicle (SUV) maker is looking at smaller, lighter vehicles like the new Evoque to grab a bigger share of the lucrative Indian market.

Edwards sees India as a great SUV market. "We think the SUV market is forecast to grow globally. Its certainly going to grow here in India as is the premium market," he added.

Below is the edited transcript of the interview.

Q: What is your view on the SUV market?

A: We see great potential and we have great optimism. We think the SUV market is forecast to grow globally. Its certainly going to grow here in India as is the premium market. We think that we have a product range and a heritage which is well placed to exploit that growth. So, we are ambitious, optimistic and we are not complacent, but we think there is great opportunity to grow.

Q: You were talking about the innovation, downsizing, smaller cars, etc, so in which direction are we seeing Land Rover products coming along?

A: We are still in the process of launching the Range Rover Evoque globally. The Range Rover Evoque is all about downsizing, more fuel efficiency and light weight. The light weight technology is going to play much greater part in our future as we move forward. So, light weight aluminum is going to be a bigger part of our business as we move forward.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. P.M. Telang, Managing Director - India Operations, said, "With the Safari Storme, the iconic Safari becomes a contemporary SUV suited to the desires of today's SUV lovers. The Ultra range and the LPT 3723 will create new segments and generate higher incomes for their owners. As importantly, we are displaying our progress with alternate fuel technologies towards a more comprehensive portfolio for the future."

The new generation Tata Safari Storme is an epitome of style and performance, true to its 4WD pedigree, with a host of technologies and new exteriors and interiors. In the front are a new grill, new projector headlamps and a 'power bulge' on the bonnet. New chrome-tipped twin exhausts, the tailgate in an all-new guise and aerodynamic spoilers distinguish the rear, with the spare tyre placed under the vehicle. Freshly designed roof-rails, ergonomical side footsteps and cladding mark the side view, completing a sportier and muscular look with a hint of the Safari Storme's adventurous character

Luxurious beige seats matched with a leather-wrapped steering wheel, chrome highlighted gear knob, wood-accented dashboard and door trims, a new instrument cluster, chrome-lined speaker grills and inside door handles endow the interiors with opulence. The front seats with fore and aft adjustment and lumbar support make long drives a cruise, while the dual AC with separate integrated roof-mounted blower keeps the entire cabin ambient.

The force of the Safari Storme is in its 2.2L 16-valve common rail (DiCOR) engine (140 PS power; 320 Nm torque) with a variable geometry turbo, mated with a 5-speed manual transmission. Electronic shift-on-the-fly (ESOF) enables shifting from 2WD to 4WD even on the move. Best-in-class turning circle radius of 5.4 metres, 200 mm ground clearance, electrically operated ORVMs and a reverse parking system makes driving convenient on any terrain. For safety, there are 4-channel ABS with EBD, disc brakes on all wheels, a new rack-and-pinion steering system, rigid ladder frame construction with hydro-formed long members, crumple zones, side intrusion beams on all doors, collapsible steering column, dual SRS airbags, inertia switch and an auto engine immobiliser.

The Tata Ultra LCV & ICV range will comprise a series of variants from 5 to 14 tonnes. The range will be powered by new generation 3L (138 HP) and 5L (168 HP) common rail (DiCOR) 16-valve engines, offering higher aggregate life, longer service intervals and low NVH.

The sleek and elegant walk-through steel cabin, a dash-mounted cable shift gear and hydraulic cabin tilt mechanism make the driver at home. Ergonomically designed mechanically suspended seats with integral headrest, power steering, which is tiltable, telescopic and collapsible, and clear-lens headlamps will make long drives stress-free in all weather conditions. The instrument cluster -- showing live and trip mileage, clutch and brake wear indicator, seat and door ajar warning, water-in-fuel indicator, economy assistance -- permits continuous vehicle monitoring in drive.

The Ultra's high strength Domex 650 steel rolled chassis frame with high tensile strength and straight long member construction allows the platform the flexibility of multiple wheel bases at multiple payload points. Radial tyres, parabolic leaf springs, tuned shock absorbers and, for the first time in the category, disc brakes ensure safe transit of goods.

The Tata LPT 3723 is India's first 5-axle rigid truck. With a payload of 25 tonnes (ideal for cement and steel movement), it will radically change transportation economics by reducing he cost/tonne-km.

It is powered by a Cummins 6BT 5.9L engine (154 kW power at 2500 rpm) and mated with a 9-speed gearbox, the first in a rigid truck in India. Twin steerable front axles, a twin-drive axle and a tag-lift axle, the only truck to have such a technology, reduces tyre and fuel costs. The turning circle diameter of 21.9 metres makes it more manoeuverable than a tractor-trailer. The air-conditioned cabin, ergonomic dashboard and instrument cluster and stylish interior trims give drivers the comfort to cover longer distances at a stretch.

The Tata Starbus Fuel Cell Concept is another path-breaking Tata Motors initiative on alternate fuels. It has been developed with support from the Government of India's Department of Scientific and Industrial Research under the Technology Development & Demonstration Programme.

In fuel cell technology, hydrogen is stored in compressed form. It combines with oxygen to generate electricity which in turn charges a battery to power the vehicle's motor, emitting only water vapour. This mechanism involves a fuel cell with gross peak power of 114 HP, coupled with a motor with the peak power output of 250 HP with motor speed from 600 rpm to 2100 rpm and torque of 1050 Nm at 800 rpm. The maximum speed of the bus is 70 kmph and gradeability is 17%, which is very suitable for city application.

The Tata Paradiso G7 Multi-axle Coach, jointly developed by Tata Motors and Tata Marcopolo Motors Limited on the Tata LPO2138 rear engine platform with world class aggregates and Marcopolo's internationally acclaimed body design, will set a new benchmark in India's luxury inter-city travel segment with an experience hitherto not seen in the country. The bus comes loaded with features like separate deluxe and luxury seating areas. The interiors have been accentuated by ergonomically designed wide recliner seats and individual AC louvres, while LED lights offer optimum illumination. Optional features include sleeping and semi-sleeping seats, on-board refrigerator, HVAC with demister, mobile charging points. Individual ear-phones and speakers with volume control for every passenger and 4 LCD screens offer superior quality entertainment.

Tata Motors' displays also include, in passenger vehicles, a Tata Nano concept, the Tata Pixel concept, the Tata Indica Vista Concept S2, the Tata Manza Nova concept, the Tata Aria - AT concept, the Tata Sumo Gold and the Tata Xenon concept. Other commercial vehicles displayed are the Tata Prima 7548.S - Concept, the Tata Prima 3138.K AT, the Tata Venture Ambulance, the Tata Ace Refresh and the Tata Super Ace (Left Hand Drive).

Tata Pixel Concept: Showcased at the 81st Geneva Motor Show in March 2011, the Tata Pixel, a new city car concept for Europe with 'Zero Turn' drive and an innovative diamond-shaped door system, is on display at the Auto Expo 2012. Based on the Tata Nano, the Pixel - at just over three metres in length - is the most package-efficient 4-seater in the world, comfortably accommodating four adults, unlike a typical city car which is either a two-seater or can accommodate two adults and two children only.

The Tata Pixel's ability to manoeuvre and park in the tightest of spaces is made possible by its Zero Turn toroidal traction-drive Infinitely Variable Transmission (IVT). This highly efficient, cost-effective system assists rotation of the outer rear wheel forwards and the inner rear wheel backwards during low-speed manoeuvres, while the front wheels turn at acute angles. The result is a turning circle radius of just 2.6 metres. The 'scissor' doors rotate upwards from the front to allow all four passengers to effortlessly enter or exit the Tata Pixel, even in the tightest of spaces, while the doors' large glass area provides excellent visibility. A forward sweeping roofline, with minimal front and rear overhangs, accentuates the youthful styling, while the window graphic features an interchangeable island that can be used to change the exterior appearance whenever desired.

The Tata Pixel also introduces 'My Tata Connect' -- the first integrated human-machine interface (HMI) concept from Tata Motors for its new generation programmes. 'My Tata Connect' enables seamless integration of the user's smartphone or tablet with the vehicle's infotainment system and also allows controlling key functions of the car. This provides a customised, user friendly, all-in-one touch screen display, while also allowing the driver to remain seamlessly connected to the external world. In addition to serving as the infotainment display when docked in the instrument panel, the tablet also allows temperature, ventilation and air-conditioning settings to be adjusted through its touch screen, as well as displaying information on the vehicle's performance.

A 1.2 litre three-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine, positioned at the rear of the Tata Pixel, gives lively performance.

The engine is a low-friction design, featuring variable coolant and oil pump and rapid warm-up technologies. With optimised aerodynamic drag, low rolling-resistance tyres, stop-start technology, and intelligent battery charging, the Tata Pixel returns European combined cycle (NEDC) fuel economy of 3.4 l/100km and CO2 emissions of just 89g/km.

Tata Indica Vista Concept S2: The Tata Indica Vista Concept S2 is the second and an advanced version of the Indica Vista Sport, showcased at the last Auto Expo, in 2010. The Indica Vista Concept S2 has a wider and wedge-like stance and the design features a central volume that is encased by two arrow like flanks giving the car a sense of direction. This is further emphasised by the two tone paint scheme - a matte metallic dark shadow and bright silver. The graphics also accentuate its wedge-like profile with the slashes and lines encasing triangular shapes giving it an edgy and razor sharp persona. The subtle aluminium accents connote a sense of precision and performance that is machine like, while the red accents give it a sporty flair. The headlamps feature a metallic brow on the top intended to give it a more purposeful demeanour. The lower grille is surrounded by a polished black lip and is flanked by signature LED day time running lamps. The swoopy side sills adds to the dynamism and makes the car look fast, even when standstill. At the rear, the spoiler and the subtly restyled bumper give the car a nice squat stance and the stylized LED tail lamp cluster make the rear end look racy.

On the insides, sporty race bucket seats clad in black leather show that the Vista Concept S2 is serious business. The smaller diameter sporty steering wheel and shifter scream performance. The black themed interior is subtle but has the right elements to make it seriously sporty. The entire approach of the colour and trim treatment, both on the inside and outside, was to give it a race-bred version look.

With a turbo-charged 1.4L Tata petrol engine, the Indica Vista Concept S2 puts out a phenomenal 140ps @ 6000rpm and a healthy 188Nm of torque at 3500rpm. Mated to a 5-speed Fiat C510 manual gearbox with revised gear ratios, the S2 is certainly no slouch and it stops as fast as it goes, due to meaty disc brakes all around. This concept is an excellent handler - thanks to the quick & precise steering rack, the retuned and beefed up suspension and wide 205/40 R17 tyres shod on lightweight 17" alloy wheels.

Tata Indigo Manza Hybrid Concept: The Tata Indigo Manza Hybrid Concept is a fusion of technology and luxury whilst having an extremely small carbon footprint thanks to its efficient hybrid architecture. Powered by a Hybrid 1.05Litre DiCOR engine and potent electric motors, the Indigo Manza Hybrid is an efficient yet powerful sedan with a focus on drivability and very usable performance in the real world, due to its nature of being both a Series and a Parallel Hybrid. The vehicle is designed to deliver excellent performance with less than 90gms/km CO2 emission in city traffic conditions with technologies like high speed cranking, regenerative braking, auto start/stop, series hybrid mode and limited range pure electric operation. On the highway, the vehicle delivers best-in-class acceleration performance in the parallel hybrid mode.

The Indigo Manza Hybrid Concept also has a completely redesigned front and rear which is extremely modern, sporty and yet sophisticated. The bi-xenon and LED headlamp cluster gives the Indigo Manza Hybrid Concept an extremely bold face and the LED tail lights add to the extremely modern and dynamic design of the car. Tata Starbus - Fuel Cell (Hydrogen) Concept: To address energy security and environment concerns, the government and the auto industry are trying to find alternate modes for transportation. Tata Motors has always been at the forefront to innovate more environment-friendly and efficient products for public transportation. Tata Motors started its innovation with CNG products, and moved on to series and parallel CNG-electric hybrid buses. At the Auto Expo 2012 the company has showcased yet another creation -- the Tata Starbus - Fuel Cell (Hydrogen) bus.

The Tata Starbus - Fuel Cell is a zero emission transport solution for commuting within the city. This environment-friendly bus is ideal for stop and go applications, and is built on rear module low entry platform, equipped with a ramp facility, pneumatic door operations, and climate control features.

The fuel cell technology makes this bus completely clean and silent bus on-road. Hydrogen is stored in compressed form, which combines with oxygen from the air to generate electricity, and gives water vapour as the only emission. This electricity is used to charge the battery to power the motor of the bus. A number of fuel cells are combined to form a fuel cell stack, which is placed in the rear module of the bus. This mechanism involves a fuel cell with gross peak power of 114 HP, coupled with a motor with the peak power output of 250 HP from 600 rpm to 2100 rpm and torque of 1050 Nm at 800 rpm. The maximum speed of the bus is 70 kmph and gradability is 17%, which is very suitable for city application.

The bus comes with hydraulic power steering, pneumatic suspension and full air dual circuit SCAM brakes with ABS, and radial tubeless tyres. The instrument cluster and cabin controls are of world class design. Quick and effortless acceleration make the driving experience less tiresome for the driver.

Tata Starbus - Fuel Cell has the potential to revolutionise public transportation in India. The efficiency in a fuel cell bus is about 40-60% which is almost 3 times than that of conventional buses. This leads to more than 50% reduction in fuel costs per Km. Since hydrogen is a domestically produced fuel, there will be no dependency on foreign policies and expensive fuels. Fast refueling will also reduce the downtime of the bus.

Thus, the Tata Starbus - Fuel Cell provides a convenient, quiet, completely relaxed and smooth ride.

Jaguar Land Rover Said to Plan Production Partnership With Chery in China

Jaguar Land Rover, the luxury vehicle unit of India’s Tata Motors Ltd. (TTMT), plans to partner with Chery Automobile Co. to build vehicles in China, two people with direct knowledge of the matter said.

The companies have applied for regulatory clearance to establish the joint venture, the people said, declining to be identified because the deal has not been finalized. The partnership may be officially announced as early as April at the Beijing auto show, they said.

Tata Motors said in May it had shortlisted unidentified partners in China to fuel expansion in the world’s largest auto market. China requires overseas carmakers to work with local manufacturers, who must own at least 50 percent of joint ventures, to set up production. Locally built vehicles are cheaper because they’re not subject to import duties.

“It’s a smart move by Tata Motors,” said Juergen Maier, a Vienna-based fund manager at Raiffeisen Capital Management that oversees about $1.1 billion of emerging-market assets, including Tata Motors shares. “It makes sense for Tata to have local production in China as it helps reduce the prices as well as cater supply more closely to the Chinese demand.”

Jin Yibo, a spokesman for Wuhu, China-based Chery, said he had “no information to disclose” when contacted yesterday by phone. Paul Chadderton, a Jaguar Land Rover spokesman based in Whitley, England, said there was “no news at this time” on the company’s plans to produce cars in China.

China Sales

Land Rover deliveries in China rose 63 percent to 17,812, while Jaguar climbed 92 percent in the first half of the fiscal year beginning April 1, the company said in an investor presentation on its website. The company expects China to become the second-largest market for Land Rover, and the third-largest market for Jaguar in the year ending March 31, the presentation said.

Chery, the sixth-largest automaker in China, was founded in 1997 and began making cars in 1999, according to the company’s website. Chery assembles passenger cars, commercial vehicles and minivans, the website said.

Luxury carmakers are turning to China to boost growth. German luxury-car manufacturers’ sales last year were propelled by demand in China, where they all posted sales gains of at least 30 percent, led by a 65 percent jump for Stuttgart-based Porsche. Audi Chief Executive Officer Rupert Stadler estimated last month that China’s car market will expand about 8 percent in 2012.

Majority of Revenue

Tata Motors paid $2.4 billion in June 2008 to buy the Jaguar and Land Rover brands from Ford Motor Co. (F) and subsequently combined them into a single division. The unit generated 57 percent of Tata Motors’ revenue for the year ended March 31, 2011, up from 53 percent the previous year.

Jaguar and Land Rover’s global deliveries rose 45 percent in December, the biggest monthly gain since June 2010, boosted by the new Evoque compact sport-utility model, Tata Motors said last month. Their sales gained 22 percent to 216,412 vehicles in the nine months through December.

The Range Rover Evoque, which was introduced in September, was named the North American truck of the year last month in Detroit. It received 32,000 initial orders, John Edwards, Land Rover brand director said in November.

Tata Motors stock today hit a 52-week high after the company said it has  increased prices of its passenger vehicles, except small car Nano and premium crossover Aria, by up to Rs 12,000 to mitigate the impact of high input costs.

The company said the price hike has been effective from Wednesdau across the country.

The company said the price hike has been effective from Wednesdau across the country. Reuters

The stock hit a high of Rs 261.80 , which is also a 52-week high for the counter.

“The high input costs have been impacting us for quite some time. We have decided to pass on some burden to our customers. The quantum of the hike will vary between Rs 7,000 and Rs 12,000 depending on the model,”  said a company spokesperson

He, however, said this price increase exercise will not include Nano and Aria.

“The price hike has been effected since yesterday,” the spokesperson added.

Last month, other passenger vehicle majors Maruti Suzuki and General Motors increased the prices of their various models by up to Rs 17,000 to offset rising input costs and the impact of currency fluctuation.

Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) hiked prices of its vehicles, except for entry-level sedan DZire, by between 0.3 per cent and 3.4 per cent. This translated into a minimum increase of Rs 2,400 on the SX4 sedan and a maximum of Rs 17,000 on the diesel variant of its Swift hatchback.

Similarly, General Motors India also increased product prices by between 0.5 per cent and 1.75 per cent for models including the Spark, Beat, Cruze and Tavera, translating into an increase ranging from Rs 3,000 to Rs 15,000.

GM India, however, left the prices of its Aveo, Aveo UVA, Optra and Captiva SUV models unchanged.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor had also hiked the prices of its different models, including the Liva and Etios, between 0.75 per cent and 3 per cent from January 1 onward.

Mahindra & Mahindra increased the price of its latest SUV, the XUV500, by up to Rs 55,000.

CARS conversion-an overhang----PFA

What are CARS?
CARS are Zero Coupon Convertible Alternative Reference Securities issued by Tata Motors in July 2007 to raise $490 million from foreign bond holders. These bonds are due for redemption on June 12, 2012 and carry yield to maturity (YTM) of 131.82%.

Scenario 1: CARS conversion by bondholders
The conversion price as well as the rupee-dollar rate while estimating the bond conversion into equity shares has been fixed. The bondholders who may opt for conversion will get a conversion price of Rs181.4. The $473 million worth CARS will fetch a dollar-rupee rate of 40.6.

Scenario 2: CARS redeemed by the bondholders
The bond holders are entitled to a 131% YTM on their zero coupon CARS. There is no fixed dollar-rupee rate for the redemption. The redemption would take place at current currency rates.

Probability of conversion low
We estimate a mere 23.3% return for bondholders in five years, assuming they sell the converted shares at Rs270 per share. The returns are much lower than 131%, five-year YTM return on the respective bonds. The conversion is highly unlikely at the current prices due to the lower relative return.

Valuation
Our FY2012 consolidated earnings per share (EPS) estimate stands at Rs36. The stock has traded between 8x and 9x one-year forward earnings in the past. Given the excellent performance of Land Rover, the company may continue to see long-term investment interest. However, the short-term overhang of CARS redemption would stay. We are positive on the stock with a long-term investment horizon.

Tata Megapixel, a new global car concept,
displayed at the 82nd Geneva Motor Show

Tata Motors today presented at the 82nd Geneva Motor Show the Tata Megapixel, a new four-seater city-smart global range extended electric vehicle (REEV) concept for the performance-seeking and environment-conscious motorist anywhere in the world. Combining a lithium ion phosphate battery and an on-board petrol engine generator for recharging on the move, the Tata Megapixel offers a range of up to 900 km (with a single tank of fuel), path-breaking CO2 emission of just 22 gm / km and fuel economy of 100 km / litre (under battery only power).

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Prakash M. Telang, Managing Director - India Operations, Tata Motors, said, "The Tata Megapixel, developed by our design centres in India, the UK and Italy, is our idea of a city car for discerning motorists in any megacity of the world. It is a result of the progress we have made on the Tata Pixel, displayed last year, and also denotes the company's future design direction."

The class-leading 'Zero Turn' drive system of the Tata Pixel (shown at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show) has been taken to an even higher level of manoeuvrability in the Tata Megapixel. The car's electric drive has four independent electric motors, one at each wheel. When parking, the electric hub motors drive the wheels in opposite directions, while the front wheels are turned at an acute angle, enabling an exceptional 2.8 metre turning radius. The at-home charging system is an as innovative induction charging system. The car has simply to be parked over the induction pad for charging to begin.

The Tata Megapixel is as distinctive in elegantly melding Indian uniqueness - in colours, graphic themes or materials - with global styling preferences. The integrated lamp and grille graphics sweep back over the front wheel arches to render a dynamic front end. It is echoed on the panoramic roof, creating a harmony between sun & shade and sense of interior space. The floating C-pillar and wrap-around belt line finisher integrate perfectly with the sculpted body surface, flowing freely to the rear and encapsulating the 5-spoke wheel design.

A double-sliding door system and the car's B-pillar less design make entry/exit easy, besides superb visibility. The battery layout and hub motors maximize the interior package. So, the Tata Megapixel comfortably accommodates four adults with luggage. The front seats are cantilevered on the central tunnel, releasing floor space for additional storage. Light leather trims and rose metal details accentuate the joyous marriage of richness of tradition and innovativeness of technology.

This fusion is heightened by an advanced human machine interface (HMI). The console docking point can connect a smart phone with the car. The built-in large touchscreen HMI, at the centre of the instrument panel, thus becomes a common access point for the repertoire of the smart device and for controlling the functions of the car, like temperature, ventilation, driving modes and performance.

Tata Motors' displays also include the new generation Tata Safari Storme SUV, the Tata Aria crossover, the Tata Indigo Manza sedan and the Tata Indica Vista hatchback.

Jaguar Land Rover says to build new sports car in Britain

LONDON: Upmarket carmaker Jaguar Land Rover, owned by India's Tata Motors, announced on Thursday that it plans to build its new Jaguar F-Type sports car in Britain.

The two-seater convertible that is the long-awaited successor to the iconic Jaguar E-Type will be built at JLR's Castle Bromwich plant in Birmingham, central England, ahead of its sales launch in the middle of 2013.

JLR had revealed the model's name earlier this week at the 2012 New York International Auto Show. The F-Type will be based on the company's C-X16 concept that had been revealed at last year's Frankfurt auto show.

Production of the E-Type ended in 1975.

Jaguar's Vehicle Line Director Ian Hoban said in a statement: "The engineering development of the F-type has focused on delivering a heightened level of dynamic driving reward.

"We are excited about our progress to date and are looking forward to soon being able to demonstrate what we have achieved."

Britain's Business Secretary Vince Cable added: "I am delighted that Jaguar's innovative new sports car will be made by the highly skilled workforce at Castle Bromwich ... This news is further evidence of the company's growth and strength of the brand which remains a key part of the UK's positive automotive story."

JRL targets emerging mkts for growth

In an exclusive interview to CNBC-TV18, Jaguar land Rover (JLR), chief executive officer, Ralf Speth says that the company could look at producing smaller engines specifically for emerging markets and India would soon become a hub for JLR.

He also says, the company plans to assemble more cars in India. Currently, JLR assembles Freelander 2 in India. He expects a good demand in China for JLR and the company does not plan to offer any discount in Chinese market.

Below is the edited version of the transcript. Also watch the accompanying video.

Q: You have said that 1.5 billion pounds is what you are going to invest every year, are emerging markets becoming so important to the company? How much of this money can we expect being re-routed into the emerging markets for further R&D?

A: We are investing heavily in R&D in product programme and international expansion. We have started producing Freelander in India. In China, we are will produce in collaboration with Chevy and we are in discussion to work out calculations in Brazil. That means, we are re-directing money into emerging markets.

Q: Recently we have seen there has been some sort of a moderation in sales as far as the luxury car market in China is concerned, which has prompted some of the luxury players going out and offering discounts. We have not seen that yet from JLR. What's your overall take of the Chinese luxury market and will we see JLR offering any kind of discounts on their products in China?

A: China is the third biggest market for Jaguar Land Rover. I am quite sure that China will take over in a very short period of time.

Jaguar Land Rover IPO Seen as Jackpot as Valuation Soars

By Siddharth Philip - Apr 18, 2012 5:29 AM GMT+0530

When Tata Motors Ltd. (TTMT) bought Jaguar and Land Rover in 2008 for $2.5 billion from Ford Motor Co. (F), investors greeted the announcement by selling its stock. Those who held on may be sitting on a jackpot.

The two British luxury car brands are worth $14 billion, according to the average estimate of three analysts surveyed by Bloomberg News, more than Fiat SpA (FI) or Suzuki Motor Corp. (7269) With a planned $12 billion in capital spending and product development over five years and a proposed partnership with Chery Automobile Co. to expand in China, conditions are right for an initial share sale, according to Fim Asset Management Ltd. and Kim Eng Securities Pvt.

After acquiring Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford, Tata Motors hired KPMG International and Roland Berger Strategy Consultants to help cut costs at the luxury unit. The company introduced new models including the new XJ sedan, the Evoque compact SUV and the XF sedan, according to a June 2009 presentation, and began targeting new emerging markets such as Russia and China.

“By listing Jaguar Land Rover, Tata Motors will allow investors who aren’t focused on India to invest in the company,” said Taina Erajuuri, a Helsinki-based money manager at FIM Asset Management that oversees about $1.2 billion including Tata Motors shares. “The new models planned for JLR require a large amount of investment, especially if the company wants to follow on the success of the Evoque.”

Record Sales

Tata Motors, the second-best performing automaker stock globally this year, extended its gains after Jaguar Land Rover recorded its highest ever monthly sales in March. That has helped make up for the slowdown in annual deliveries of Tata- branded passenger vehicles in India, where interest rates and fuel prices have dented consumer confidence.

The Indian automaker said in August that it will double its annual spending on product development and capital expenditure at Jaguar Land Rover to 1.5 billion pounds ($2.4 billion) over five years to fund an expansion that includes a pipeline of 40 new or upgraded vehicle models. That is more than the $2 billion in profit that Tata earned in the 2011 fiscal year.

The British luxury carmaker will also add 1,000 jobs and a third shift to boost production at its U.K. plant to meet surging demand for the Range Rover Evoque, named the North American truck of the year in January in Detroit.

Unlocking Value

“I think it will be a good thing if Tata Motors decides to list JLR,” said Jigar Shah, a Mumbai-based analyst with Kim Eng Securities, using the acronym for the two British brands that Tata combined after the purchase. “An IPO for JLR makes sense as it will unlock value for shareholders.”

Tata Motors expects to fund Jaguar Land Rover’s capital expenditure and product development needs through internal cash accruals, Debasis Ray, a company spokesman, said in an e-mail. “However, we will continue to consider opportunities for capital structure management as done in the past.”

In March, Tata Motors raised 500 million pounds in notes, adding to a 1 billion pound bond issue in May 2011. The company had cash and equivalents of $3.1 billion as of Sept. 30, 2011, according to data compiled by Bloomberg

The company’s stock has advanced more than 60 percent this year in Mumbai trading, the biggest percentage gainer on the 30- company benchmark Sensitive Index. The company is also the second-best performer this year on the MSCI AC World Automobiles & Components Index.

Product Pipeline

Jaguar, which announced that it would introduce a two-seat, all-new sports car in 2013 called the F-Type, is looking to expand its product portfolio as sales more than quadrupled in China, and doubled in Russia in the quarter ended Dec. 31, compared with a year earlier, Tata Motors said in a presentation on its website.

Jaguar and Land Rover sales in China and Russia boosted profitability as demand in emerging markets helped tide over slower growth in advanced economies. The Evoque, which the company began delivering in September, accounted for 30 percent of Land Rover’s 65,287 retail sales in the October-to-December quarter.

The two British brands weren’t always winners. When Tata announced the deal in March 2008, its largest acquisition ever, Jaguar’s sales had dropped 33 percent in the U.S. and Europe in the preceding two months, while Land Rover’s deliveries fell 13 percent and 7.7 percent respectively during the period.

Diluting Ownership

Jaguar was listed on the London Stock Exchange until 1990 after Ford bought the company. The U.S. carmaker sold Aston Martin in 2007, and Jaguar and Land Rover businesses a year later as losses in its main auto business drained cash.

Tata may prefer to fund the capital spending through a bond issue to avoid diluting ownership of its biggest profit center, according to Juergen Maier, a Vienna-based fund manager at Raiffeisen Capital Management which oversees about $1.1 billion of emerging-market assets including Tata Motors.

“Two years ago, it would have made sense for Tata Motors to have sold a stake in JLR,” said Maier. “Today, there is still growth and liquidity is not a problem.”

Global sales at JLR gained 29 percent to 314,433 vehicles in the 12 months through March, the company said in a statement this week. That compares with the 3 percent annual increase in sales for Tata passenger vehicles.

China Growth

The company expects China to become the second-largest market for Land Rover, and the third-largest market for Jaguar in the year that ended March 31, it said in a presentation on its website.

JLR will spend 3.5 billion yuan ($555 million) for a 50 percent stake in a planned venture with Wuhu, China-based Chery Auto. The agreement, signed in December 2011, will build the U.K. luxury carmaker’s models in China to challenge Daimler AG (DAI), General Motors Co. (GM) and Volkswagen AG (VOW) in the world’s largest auto market. The government still has to approve the venture.

The company will introduce new versions of the XF and Range Rover Sport in the 2013 financial year, Bhaumik Bhatia, an analyst at Mumbai-based IDBI Capital, said in an April 9 note. There is currently a waiting period of about six weeks for JLR models, and two to three months for the Evoque, according to the report.

“Luxury car sales have picked up this year especially in emerging markets like China.” FIM Asset’s Erajuuri said. “Jaguar has been listed in the past before it was acquired by Ford in 1989 and so I think investors will invest in JLR.”

Meet the new fans of the Tata Nano

by FP Editors

Women. And first-time car buyers.

Yes, these two groups are boosting sales of Tata Motors’ compact car, Nano, in 2012, according to a report in Mint. Fading concerns over the car’s safety, a zippy new look, improved fuel efficiency, an increase in the number of dedicated dealerships and attractive finance plans, and improved fuel efficiency are cited as the main reasons for the surge in interest, the newspaper said.

According to a Tata Motors spokesperson, up to 10-12 percent of those behind the wheel of a Nano are women.

Agencies

In March, sales of the Nano, touted as the world’s cheapest car, nearly tripled to 10,475 units from 3,868 in October, according to data by industry group Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (Siam).

To cater to increasing demand, the company has been increasing production at its Sanand plant in Gujarat, according to suppliers who spoke to the newspaper. Tata Motors, according to suppliers, plans to sell about 12,000 units in April and is working towards selling 15,000 units a month — the level required for the Sanand factory to break-even — during the festive season beginning October.

It looks like things are finally turning around for the Nano, which had come close to being completely written off by industry watchers and buyers not so long ago.

A report in IndianCarsBikes says that as a next step, Tata Motors’ has started testing the diesel-engine variant of the Nano, which is set to be launched in future. That would be a real kicker to sales, since over the past year, diesel-engine car sales have accounted for nearly 40 percent of all new car sales in 2011-2012. The popularity of diesel-engine cars soared after the price difference between petrol and diesel widened, making diesel a much cheaper fuel. However, a diesel version of the Nano is still some time away.

Arriving earlier will be the CNG (compressed natural gas) version of the Nano, set to be launched before the end of this current financial year. A Bloomberg report says the diesel-engine variant could cost up to 30 percent more than the petrol variant.

Certainly, Tata seems to be getting it right with women drivers, a growing buyer segment. A cover story by Outlook magazine earlier this year pointed out that while there are several women drivers, most car dealers still don’t know how to make effective sales pitches to female customers, instead ending up being condescending.

Luxury car maker Jaguar Land Rover, part of Tata Motors , plans to invest 200 million pounds in a plant in central England, the Daily Telegraph reported on Thursday.

The investment at the factory, which will build Jaguar's new F-type sports car, is expected to create up to 1,000 jobs and increase its capacity by 50 percent, according to the article.

Tata Motors JLR Sales for April 2012 - A Big Disappointment

  • JLR sales for the month of April 2012 came in at 25,143 units which is 29.4% YoY growth. But it is down 31% QoQ. In March Company sold 36,471 units.
  • This sales number is a huge disappointment as it is 9% lower than the Sep 2011 sales figures of 27,639 units, which was the first month of Evoque launch.
  • If we exclude Evoque sales figure of 8,300 units, sales are down by 13% YoY to 16,843 units in April 2012.
  • China which account for 25% of the sales did well with wholesale volumes growing 150% YoY.
  • US sales were a bit disappointing as retail volumes grew by 3% YoY.
  • Jaguar sales grew 17% YoY to 3,603 units in April 2012. MoM it declined 33%.
  • Land Rover sales grew 31.7% YoY to 21,540 units in April 2012. MoM it declined 31%.
  • Chery Automobile Co. Ltd. has applied for government approval to establish a joint venture with Jaguar Land Rover in China. China requires environmental reviews before allowing automakers to build new assembly plants.

FY13 JLR volume target steady at 3,60,000 units: Kotak Inst

Tata Motors ’ April global sales were unimpressive which came in at 87,377 units. Their total JLR global sales came in at 25,143 units. April global CV sales came in 8% lower at 38,008 units YoY.

In an interview to CNBC-TV18, Hitesh Goel, analyst at Kotak Institutional Equities breaks down the numbers and tells investors how they should play the stock going ahead.

Below is an edited transcript of his interview.

Q: What did you make of the numbers of Tata Motors? Have you rated as a blip the kind of slip they have seen month-on-month (MoM) or do you think sales are likely to start falling from here?

A: If we have to look at it from a MoM perspective, I think the sales are below expectation by 10-13%. If you look at the MoM, there is a decline of 30% and historically it is around 20%. The sales are even weaker to that extent because if you include Evoque which is a new addition to the portfolio did around 8,000 volumes this month. So excluding Evoque the volumes are down 12% which is a big disappointment.

But I think in the last quarter, there was some inventory build-up on JLR which is now getting corrected to some extent. Overall, the expectations are higher from volumes for next year which could get revised and little bit down because of weaker demand in Europe but China continues to do well for them so I don’t see a major impact on consensus estimates for next year. But yes, it is a little bit of a disappointment.

Q: Any reason to believe that this could be just a one month blip and the numbers might bounce back next month or you would be unclear or uncertain about that?

A: China is not showing any signs of slowdown as of yet although the macro news which is coming across is very weak. On the luxury car side, most of the manufacturers are reporting very strong growth. I don’t see China getting impacted on the luxury car side in the near term but Europe could surprise on the downside in my view where you could see weaker numbers whereas the US will hold off well. I think only Europe which is 45% of sales could be a concern otherwise I don’t see a major impact on the US or China.

Q: Are you cutting your own JLR estimates for the year and your price target for the stock after this?

A: Not really. Actually, my numbers are anyways lower than street of around 352,000. The consensus has moved to 370,000. I think they can easily do 3,60,000 because of Evoque. I don’t see a major concern on my price target as of now.

Q: Would you expect that the greater pressure would show up on the premium category and that may pinch margins for Tata Motors?

A: That is more of a longer term concern because historically if you look at margins for BMW, Audi and all these players, have moved up by 3% from historical level from 8% EBIT there. For BMW the margins are close to 12% because of China- you are selling vehicles at a huge premium in eastern part of China which is a fairly richer society.

Now most of these manufacturers are moving towards western side where the per capita incomes are lower and you would start seeing that playing out over the next 2-3 years where margins will start going down because these guys cannot afford the higher range SUVs which these guys are selling and making money on that. In the near term the currency would be more important. How currency moves which will determine margins otherwise from product portfolio perspective I don’t see a major downside to margins per se.

Morgan stanley is buying DVRs & CLSA is buying Equity shares of Tata Motors

On Thu, May 17, 2012 at 3:17 PM, Mayuri Mehta <mayuri...@gmail.com> wrote:

Don’t give up on Tata Motors, Evoque is sure to drive volumes

The stocks of Tata Motors, the country’s largest commercial vehicle maker dropped 7.5 percent yesterday to touch an intra day low of Rs 268.55 after the company reported flat global vehicle sales growth in April compared to last year.

Tata Motors has sold 87,377 vehicles in April. Overall passenger cars sales were 49,369 vehicles, a rise of 7 percent from last year. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) sales rose by 29 percent compared to last year while commercial vehicle sales slipped 8 percent.

But JLR’s sales when compared to last month has dropped 31 percent. Leaving out JLR’s Evoque, sale have dropped 39 percent compared to last month and 14 percent over last year, which is not good news. BMW and Mailer sales also fell 21 percent in April compared March worsening the numbers of JLR.

The management has attributed the low sales to seasonality as April sales historically see a drop over March.

The management maintains  the UK market always sees a large seasonal drop in sales in April and JLR has a higher UK exposure than its German peers which could explain the slip. Competitors of Tata in Europe and UK have given higher discounts in Europe and UK too.

But CLSA in its latest report says there is no sign yet of any demand weakness. It notes JLR has seen an average drop of 30 percent in volumes  in the last 10 years, though the drop has been a lower 22 percent in the last two years. Though CLSA expected a lower drop this month compared to the previous one, they emphasise that Tata has maintained its guidance for 1,00,000-1,10,000 Evoque volumes for 2013 and 4-6 percent growth for non-Evoque industry sales. This implies 2013 volumes of 3,70,000-3,80,000. CLSA is factoring in sales at 3,90,000 units.

CLSA explains it has factored in a Evoque sale growth of 8 percent for the current financial year. Even if the growth comes down to zero, their target price would come down to Rs 340. That is much above the current price of Rs 273.

It is also bullish on the stock as it sees multiple volume triggers in the form of Evoque ramp-up and the launch of the new Range Rover platform by 2012 end. “Multiple cost initiatives are underway, which together with an improving regional sales-mix and favourable currency trends, should drive strong margins,” CLSA writes.

It maintains a Buy with a target price of Rs 370.

Although I didn’t own it and I still don’t own it, I said that it is ridiculous how fund managers can sell stocks like that. In this bad market since then that stock is up more than 10% from that day.

The point is my belief is that fund managers act differently when they are playing with their own money or investing their own money and then they invest as fund managers. I have always behaves with the fund money that it is my money. So would I just sell a stock down 10% as if there is some fraud that is being discovered tonight on a company, which has 4 multiple because we own the DVR and which has 3% plus yield and a 4 multiple. Tata Motors plant at Dharwad comes on stream

Tata Motors' Dharwad plant for small commercial vehicles is now operational and has begun to produce the Tata ACE Zip and the Tata Magic IRIS.

Mr. P. M. Telang, Managing Director - India Operations, Tata Motors said, "We are very delighted to commence manufacturing operations in Dharwad and further expand our operations in the country. This move is integral to Tata Motors' dominant presence in the Commercial Vehicles market."

Launched in May 2011, the Tata Magic IRIS is a four-wheel, 3-4 seater small passenger carrier, a stylish, safe and comfortable alternative for commuters who depend on three-wheelers. The Tata Ace Zip, also launched in May 2011, is a technologically superior and a smart micro truck with a payload of 600 kg for deep-penetration door-to-door goods movement.

Established with an investment of over Rs. 900 crores, the plant spans across an area of 405 acres. The plant has been constructed as per the norms specified by Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). The plant has been equipped with state-of-the-art equipment following lean manufacturing principles. It has built-in flexibilities to assemble large numbers and different variants in mixed mode production. The plant has been recommended for ISO 14001, Environment Management System Standard.

The major capital outlay, encompassing civil and plant engineering work for the facility, has been sourced from Europe, the US, South Korea, Japan and best-in-class suppliers from India. The capacity of the plant, to begin with, is 90,000 units per year, to be achieved in phases. Further capacity expansion has also been provided for.

The plant has already directly employed 350 individuals. The recruitment exercise covered about 76 ITIs in Karnataka. Training, skill transfer and development of local workforce is one of the top priorities of Tata Motors. The company's training processes and facilities in India have been acknowledged as among the best. Leveraging this expertise through a robust local skill transfer and training programme, Tata Motors is committed to ensuring that skill levels of individuals employed are further enhanced.

Tata Motors has also begun activities towards development of local communities by working on four thrust areas - employability, education, health and environment - making it into a beehive of inclusive growth.

ET Now: To your mind, what is the real and correct price level for Tata Motors?

Deven Choksey: I don't know what would be the right price level, but if I look at the fundamentals of the company, then I think that against last year's Rs 34.5-35 earning per share, if this company ends up producing flat result even in this year, taking the worst case scenario, then this particular price level would demand a buy in this kind of a stock.

We believe that over a period of time this company would overcome the kind of concerns that most of the analysts have raised after the last quarter's results, particularly in the JLR margin front. I think, the new launches have taken the toll on the margins for the time being which may not be the case going forward in subsequent quarters.

I assume that even if they end up maintaining single digit growth on the volume front on JLR portfolio, then probably this company on a safer side could make an earning per share of around Rs 37-38 and in a good case probably around Rs 39-40.

Hence, from that point of view Rs 35 would become a very safe bet to buy Tata Motors on an earnings basis. So from that point of view, buy into this particular stock for investment portfolio and stay invested thereafter.

NEW DELHI: Tata Motors surged over 4 percent in trade on Friday after the company reported global vehicle sales of 96,089 vehicles for the month of May, up 12 percent YoY.

The rise in sales was mainly led by 35 percent rise in sales of its luxury Jaguar Land Rover vehicles. Sales of its Jaguar Land Rover vehicles stood at 30,094 in the month.

Brokerage houses expect JLR to report sales in the range of 28,000-29,000 units for May 2012 as against 25,143 units in previous month, reports ET Now.

Ajay Srivastava, Dimensions Consulting Pvt. Ltd is of the view that Tata Motors is a good buy among other auto stocks and he believes that is one stock which has got lot of fundamental value. He places a target price of Rs 220 for the global auto giant.

"Tata Motors is perhaps the only one which can give trading pops of 15% to 20% and none of the other stocks in auto can give you that pop," added Srivastava.

In a separate report, Nomura has downgraded Tata Motors ratings to 'Neutral' with a price target of Rs 251. JLR's 4QFY12 EBITDA declined by 240bps q-q to 14.6%, well below the estimate and consensus of 18-19%. JLR's current margins are in line with those of global peers and management's guidance.

We, thus, reduce our FY13F/FY14F margins from 17.7%/18% to 14.1%/14.5%" said Nomura in its note to clients. Nomura's valuation of the standalone business remains largely unchanged.

S&P ups Tata Motors to 'BB';outlook positive. Tata Motors' dominant position in the growing Indian commercial vehicle market and JLR's improving competitive position support the company's business risk profile.

On Fri, Jul 6, 2012 at 1:31 PM, Puransingh Kochar <kochar...@gmail.com> wrote:

Morgan Stanley on Friday cut its price target on Tata Motors to Rs 240 from Rs 291 saying there were multiple speed bumps ahead -- Jaguar Land Rover's product cycle is entering a slow phase, India's medium and heavy commercial vehicle cycle is weak and luxury vehicle environment is becoming more competitive.

Over the last couple of years, JLR has seen strong growth in emerging markets. China, for instance, now contributes 35% of its EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) and is growing at 70% year-on-year according to the global investment bank. But after setting a scorching pace, things could be cooling down here.

Morgan Stanley recently conducted its third China dealer survey and there are signs of a slowdown.

Incentives are rising in the Chinese luxury vehicle market and majority (65%) of the dealers surveyed indicated that pricing environment has become more competitive than it was a year ago.

55% of dealers reported that inventories are rising. Land Rover's inventory has gone up to 30 days from 15 days.

Showroom footfalls are also falling at premium brands. Like-for-like growth for Land Rover is down to 8% in the first half of 2012 from 13% in second half last year.

Apart from slowing sales, Morgan Stanley points out that after the huge success of the Evoque SUV last year, there is not much on the production front that will surprise the street positively this year.

"Over the next two quarters product cycle will be going into a lull prior to upgrades to its Range Rover and Sport in early 2013...Evoque's performance was a positive surprise to the Street, whereas this time consensus is building in healthy growth from the Range Rover upgrades into estimates, thus the likelihood of a positive surprise is limited," it said.

Meanwhile, back home, the medium and heavy commercial vehicle sector has hit a slowdown due to the overall macro-economic downturn and high interest rates.  According to Morgan Stanley estimates, M&HCV sales contribute to 60% of Tata Motors' EBITDA, so a slowdown here is also a big concern. Tata Motors' M&HCV sales fell 23% to 34,943 units in April-June.

Tata Motors is down almost 26% from its 2012 high. But Morgan Stanley has maintained a "equal-weight" rating on the stock.

CLSA too had removed Tata Motors from its top five "buy" ideas this week saying, sentiment has deteriorated over the last few months with disappointments on JLR margins and non-Evoque volumes. While valuations remain attractive, it doesn't forsee any near-term triggers.

Tata Motors: 10 things to watch out for in Q1 results

Tata Motors will announce its quarterly results today. The company is expected to post a net profit of Rs 2,650 crore for the quarter ended June 2012, up 33.4 per cent, boosted by a jump in LCV sales growth, according to ET Now estimates.

The company reported a Rs 2,000 crore net profit in the corresponding period of the 2011-12 fiscal year.

Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) -- the operations profitability measure of a company -- is expected to rise by 33.4 per cent to Rs 5,650 crore against Rs 4,236 crore in the year-ago-period.

Margins for the company are seen at 13.1 per cent as compared to 13.09 per cent in the corresponding quarter of the last year.

Shares of Tata Motors have been gaining momentum in the last couple of weeks ahead of its quarterly results announcement. The stock has surged over 30 per cent over the year.

According to dealers, apart from result expectations, the stock was reacting to hopes of a rate cut that might help boost sales in the domestic market.

The company is likely to report strong quarterly results on the back of growth in Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) sales while domestic sales may hurt.

"The results are expected to be good on a year-on-year basis, led by strong growth in the Jaguar Land Rover segment. Domestic performance will be under pressure due to lower sales in MHCVs," Yaresh Kothari, Research Analyst at Angel Broking, said.

10 things to watch out for in the results:

1) Margins likely flat YoY; however, may slip QoQ.

2) Growth in LCV by 16 per cent is likely to drive domestic sales.

3) Standalone sales are likely to decline by 9 per cent dues to lower volumes (- 2 per cent) and realisations, which have come down by 7 per cent.

4) Standalone margins are seen at 8 per cent as compared to 8.4 per cent in the year-ago period

5) JLR margins seen at 13.7 per cent (down 100 bps QoQ)

6) JLR volume growth will boost revenues in Q1

7) JLR volume growth is expected in the range of 36-38 per cent

8) JLR realisations expected to decline by 3-4 per cent YoY

9) Realisations are likely to drop due to changing product mix as more Evoque sales are expected

10) Management view on margins, demand outlook in China and European markets will be keenly awaited

About Sangeeta Babani

Ms. Sangeeta Babani was raised in Spain, a country with rich cultural heritage. Imbibing Spanish art and culture during her growing years led her to the ultimate initiation into Indian art and culture when she settled in Mumbai after marriage.

Sangeeta veers from figurative realistic to semi-abstract depiction, landscape to abstraction as the mood takes her. There are no straight answers and that is the beauty of life, is her firm belief; this philosophy is celebrated in her canvases with an exuberance of colour and emotion.

Characterised by an ambiguity, simultaneously introspective and impressionist in nature, her paintings come alive with vibrant hues and multiple thoughts in an engaging narrative. Interpretation becomes subjective and distinct from one viewer to another. The artist celebrates her journey to the unknown, leaving the onlooker to pursue his.

About Anil Dingankar

A Young, upcoming artist, Anil Dingankar is the alumni of premier institutions of Mumbai, LS. Raheja School of Art & Sir. J. J. School of Art, having accomplished his Post Graduate Diploma in Art Education from the latter only three years ago. Open to research and experimentation, Anil has been dabbling in various mediums and is as adept at paintings as he is at murals. The young lad has been working on various architectural and interior projects, where he incorporates experiential aesthetics into the ambience via functional works of art.

Quick grasping ability, attention-to-detail and 5-6 years of on-field exposure makes Anil is a pro at successfully accomplishing any project he chooses to associate with. He has several awards and accolades to his credit.

Both Sangeeta and Anil's works are curated by the Pradarshak gallery in Khar, Mumbai, a small boutique gallery specializing in both the emerging and established art scene.

We are honoured to receive this prestigious order and are committed to deliver these vehicles this fiscal year. We thank the company for their continued trust and patronage of our brand”.

The New Tata PRIMA 4923 - LX is from the new 230 HP range of PRIMA trucks, was launched to extend the PRIMA advantage to many more transporters who require a lower power-to-weight ratio. These vehicles are fitted with a Cummins ISBe electronic engine with common rail injection, for efficient fuel injection. This comes with India’s first indigenously developed 9-speed gearbox from Tata Motors with an overdrive function which provides superior fuel efficiency. These vehicles are also coupled with a 430 mm diameter organic clutch and 10-T rear axle to deliver a balanced and robust drive train. The Tata PRIMA LX cabin comes with an optional AC, 4 point suspension for reduced vibration and double sleeper bunks to provide maximum comfort to the driver.

The Tata LPT 3723 is the first 5-axle rigid truck in the country and will be the next big game changer in the Indian commercial vehicle industry. This truck can carry around 4.5 tonnes more than the existing 31 tonne MAV (Multi-axle vehicle) segment. As a result, it is all set to radically change the economics of transportation in multiple segments by reducing the cost per Tonne-Km of transportation. It is powered by a Cummins 6BT 5.9L engine (155 kW power at 2500rpm), twin steerable front axles, a twin-drive axle and a tag-lift axle: the only truck to have such a technology, reducing tyre and fuel costs. The turning circle diameter of 21.9 metres makes it more maneuverable.

Tata Motors enters Bangladesh's new car market

Tata Motors today made its maiden entry in the Bangladesh new car market, introducing two sedans and a hatchback. They are the Tata Indigo eCS, India's most fuel-efficient compact sedan, the Tata Indigo Manza, a luxury sedan, and the Tata Indica Vista hatchback, with class defining space. The Manza and the Vista are born out of Tata Motors' new car platform.

Speaking on the introduction of the passenger cars in Bangladesh, Mr. Karl Slym, Managing Director, Tata Motors, said, "We are happy and honoured to enter Bangladesh with our passenger cars. Our 40-year association with Bangladesh has given us an insight into the aspiration of the country's motorists. They will be central to our business - we will delight them with the performance of our cars and the comfort and excellence of our service, and establish ourselves as we have in commercial vehicles since 1972."

Mr. Johnny Oommen, Head, International Business, Passenger Cars, said, "Bangladesh's customers for new cars demonstrate high discernment. They will see that reflected in our cars. Our service will be easy-to-reach and prompt."

Mr. Abdul Matlub Ahmad, Chairman, of the company's distributor, NITOL Motors, said, "Our association with Tata Motors goes back over two decades, and we are extremely happy that, in addition to commercial vehicles, Tata Motors has now placed their confidence in us to market their passenger cars and utility vehicles. We share Tata Motors' commitment to its customers in building a business for perpetuity."

To begin with, they will be available in Dhaka with one showroom. By 2013, three other cities will be covered, with a showroom each.

Tata Motors has a 40-year heritage in Bangladesh, having introduced its buses in 1972. There are about 53,000 Tata commercial vehicles on Bangladesh roads. The company is today the market leader with a 70% market share.

JLR dealers’ feedback (Europe/UK)

We met a few JLR dealers in Europe/UK during our recent marketing roadshow. Land Rover dealers were extremely enthused by the response to the new Range Rover (waiting periods ranging between 9-13 months). Dealers cited that this product upgrade was long overdue given that competitors were upgrading every 3-4 years. They were also elated about the Evoque opening up their customer base to a whole new type of buyer (a more urban crowd which was relatively untapped earlier). This reinforced our positive view on JLR. Reiterate BUY!

Want the new Range Rover? Wait till January 2014!

We met a few JLR dealers in Paris, Frankfurt, and London. Across dealers, waiting period on the new Range Rover was ranging between 9-13 months. This was encouraging given that the vehicle wasn't even on display in some of the showrooms (most dealers were expecting it in the coming week). Testimony to the brand loyalty, a sizeable portion of bookings (almost 20%) were received even before the new model was unveiled by the company (the booking amount is ~GBP1,000).

Dealers cite that this product upgrade was the need of the hour. While the Land Rover brand is synonymous for being the "definitive SUV", they previously seem to have been a little complacent with the product (the flagship Range Rover had not seen a meaningful upgrade in 11 years, while competitors like Porsche Cayenne, Merc GL, etc. were upgrading every 3-4 years).

Evoque opens the LR brand to a whole new market

LR dealers were particularly pleased about the Evoque opening up their potential customer base to a whole new type of buyer (a younger/more urban crowd, women), who never previously considered Land Rover as an option. Given the price points, one would think that the Evoque would have cannibalized the Freelander to some extent, but that hasn't been the case as both vehicles appeal to completely different buyers.

For Jaguar, while the newly launched F-type also enjoys a 5-month order backlog, it's not expected to be a significant volume driver given the niche segment. However, Jag dealers cite that the entry-level sedan (to be launched in FY15) would fill a huge gap in the product portfolio, and hence remains the biggest volume catalyst for Jaguar.

Reiterate BUY!

With all Land Rover platforms due for a significant upgrade over the next 4-5 years, JLR's product life cycle is at its sweetest spot. Also, while the outlook for the domestic business is weak, street expectations from the same have reduced more than proportionately. This was most evident in 2Q - the domestic business slipped into a loss, but it didn't break any hearts. From a stock perspective, this is a good place to be. Reiterate BUY with a target of INR353.

Tata Motors may launch 800 cc Nano; likely price at Rs2.5lakh. The move comes on the back of slack sales, which touched a low point in Nov, when the company managed to sell barely 3,500 cars against a target of 10,000.
