Fingers crossed that other people w/ similar vision have successfully
bought glasses online!

My prescription:
R: -10.50 +3.25 x103
L: -11,00 +2.75 x65
PD: 59.5

Additionally...
I have a narrow head (45-17 tends to be a decent measurement).
My eyes are not deepset, so I need nosepads to keep my lashes from
hitting the lenses.
I'm a graphic designer and spend my workdays on the computer but have
never had eye strain from the screen or reading on it (even during
marathon 17 hours straight).
Because of how much my prescription visually shrinks my eyes, I prefer
a thicker/heavier frame (such as plastic) to balance out my face.
Fashion is important to me.

Which sites sell prescriptions this strong? Who's good at getting it
right on the first try? Is there anything I need to consider or watch
out for? Any recommendations in general?

Thanks!
Julia

Several of the vendors can do prescriptions at that strength...it's
not a challenge.

The rule of thumb we use for prescriptions that high is to keep the
lenses as small as possible, and preferably as round as
possible...this minimizes the differences in edge thickness, and tends
to produce the thinnest lenses.

So let's start with this question. What do you consider stylish?

Glad to hear that some vendors can accommodate my prescription!

As for stylish, here are some that I've looked at and liked recently:
http://www.eyeglasses.com/instock/glasses/oliver-peoples/score.html
http://www.eyeglasses.com/instock/glasses/ray-ban-glasses/rx-5121.html
http://www.eyeglasses.com/instock/glasses/neostyle/college-294.html
http://www.eyeglasses.com/instock/glasses/smilen-eyewear/2056.html
http://www.eyeglasses.com/instock/glasses/modo-m/2024.html

http://www.zennioptical.com/cart/product.php?productid=1387&cat=13&page=2

I tend to like a slight cat's eye curve or angle, and thick edges. I
know that my lenses should be small and round so I try to look for
glasses that keep the curve on the inside and use the frame to create
any angle. I don't like overly designed bows. And I tend to like
heavier looking glasses but need them to be smaller to stay
proportionate to my face.

Thank you!

I cannot recommend highly enough Coastal Contacts.

And, throw in Zenni. They're slow, but they're known to get the
prescription exact.

If I were you, I'd look for frames with lenses less than 50mm wide.
With a correction as strong as yours, the frames with wide lenses are
going to be pretty thick, even if you order high-index lenses.

My correction is -7.00 and -7.50. I ordered these from Zenni:
http://www.zennioptical.com/cart/product.php?productid=103&cat=0&page=1
, with mid-index lenses and they're not very thick at all. I know
they're not that high-fashion look that you're going for, but keep in
mind that the narrower the lenses the less they'll look like coke
bottles.

Hi Julia,

My prescription is an unusual one, OD-9.00 OS-4.50. Another family
member is OD-13.50 OS-11.75.

Between us, we've ordered a lot of glasses online. The prescription
in every pair of lenses from 39 Dollar Glasses, Coastal Contacts, and
Zenni has been spot on.

I have a wide head, and have noticed that Zenni and 39 Dollar seem to
have quite a few frames that are too narrow for me, but might be right
for you. Although my head is wide, the bridge of my nose is small and
narrow, so, like you, I need nosepads to get a perfect fit. Finding
frames with a narrow bridge is not always easy, but is worth the
effort. They not only fit better, but, as has been discussed in
another thread here, the lenses are better centered on your pupils,
and thus aren't as thick at the outside edge.

Coastal has many selections that appear to be designer closeouts, and
turn over frequently, so they may be worth checking more than once.

I splurged and bought one pair from http://www.coolframes.com/ and was
very pleased. The frames aren't cheap, but they have a large selection
of up-to-date and unusual designer frames at a discount. My 1.67 high-
index lenses (house-brand) with all coatings included, were $94, and
perfect. I chose a French-made Lafont frame for $250. For less than
$350, I got a handsome, unusual pair of glasses that would have cost
me well over $1000 at a high-end local boutique.

Good luck, and have fun shopping!

I've got a -13 prescription and have had reasonably good luck with
Zenni. However, I have a +2.5 add for reading and Zenni -- and most
other low-price online vendors -- will only fill single vision orders
in "extreme" prescriptions. You can toss progessives or bifocals into
the cart on Zenni, but you'll get a follow-up message that you have to
change the order to single vision. (I last tried about 2 months ago,
so if this has changed, please let me know.) Zenni also would only
let me order full-frame glasses. I recommend that you stick to a
small, rounded lens and specify in the comment field that you do not
want them to "roll" the edges. I forgot to specify that on one order,
they rounded the edges of the lenses, and the glasses look like the
ends of Coke bottles. Ugly.

BestPrice Glasses said they would fill the prescription, but I'm
waiting to get a new prescription before trying them, because they
weren't cheap--there was an added price of 109.95 or 159.95 depending
on the index of the lens I selected.

If anyone knows of a good, cheap source for the extremely myopic
people who need a "reading add", please post it!

I have a question about "rounded edges." What exactly are they? I
found a pair of semi-rimless from Zenni. Is this simply an aesthetic
or is this necessary for the prescription? Also, can they have that
feature on semi-rimless? I'm about to place my first order from Zenni
so I want to make sure I get something I'm happy with.

Thanks.

I should have been clearer when I recommended a "small rounded" lens.
What I mean is an oval, not rectangular, shaped lens. The popular
frames at the moment are rectangular, but if you have an extreme
prescrption the "corners" of the lenses will be very thick. With some
frames, that will mean that the edges of the lenses will need to be
"rolled" to allow the frame to be folded. I suspect that some
people may prefer the rolled edges--they seem to be popular these
days--and with rimless frames they may work. With plastic frames,
however, you get the Coke bottle effect so well known to those of us
with strong prescriptions.

Does anyone know the correct terminology for what I'm calling edge
rolling? I like to specify that I do not want it, given that it
appears to be popular these days. I've been carefully picking frames
that will not require it and then writing "Please do not "roll", i.e.,
sculpt, the edges of the lenses." in the comment box of order forms.
So far that has worked (except once) but I'd prefer to use the right
terminology.

Thanks Irene. I feel a little more comfortable now. I'm not extreme
myopic but I'm definitely concerned about looks. I'm actually getting
the following prescription:

OD -0.75
OS PLANO

And I'm getting that with the frame below:

http://www.zennioptical.com/cart/product.php?productid=1590&cat=20&page=1

I think I'll order them as is.

Thanks,

Tu
