I emailed Zenni about what index lenses they felt I needed for some
frames I like, providing them with my Rx. They replied with the
following:

"We do not use the 1.61 index lens until the Spherical or Cylinder
readings are greater than +/- 5.00; and the 1.67 is not used until the
respective correction exceeds +/- 7.00."

So I called them to make sure that is correct, which they confirmed.
So told them about my recent order, and since they used 1.57 index on
my glasses if they would refund the $37 I paid for 1.67 index lenses.
They said they would not. I asked if I could get a credit for a future
purchase which they also said no to.

Is it just me, or is that really crappy? Nowhere on there site do they
say if your Rx is under -5 that they will not use high index lenses. I
feel I am due a refund for the cost of the high index upgrade ($37)
since that is not what they provided me.

Totally agree with you! You paid for something you obviously didn't
get.

This bothers me.

While my experience so far has been quite positive...I've not received
my glasses yet. (middle of next week) If you make a choice, and pay
for it, then they should either provide what you chose (even if it was
a poor choice on your part) or they should refund the difference.

I'm surprised this was their policy. Not good, from a retail
standpoint.

Get the charges taken off by your credit card company. With their
refusal in writing, that will be a no-brainer.

What's the thickness difference btw?
Is it really worth it to get 1.61 vs 1.57 for something like -2
sphere?

What possible rationale could they have expressed for charging you $37
and not providing the service? It doesn't make sense. I would
imagine their website should prohibit choosing the high index if the
numbers are too low, just like it automatically charges you extra
shipping for sending things to Canada for example.

I just received a couple more pairs of Zenni's and I love them. I'm a
'quick adopter' and the narrow corridor progressive isn't a problem at
all. I find there isn't anything I can't focus on if I just move my
head the tiniest bit.

The $37 was refunded.

Clearly he didn't need the high index lenses with his perscription, so
they did the responsible thing.

Now that fact that thier web site isn't programmaed for all
permutations and combinations
of lesnse options, but they fixed it manually.

Today I placed an order for glasses (sph -3.00&-2.50, cyl -0.50&-1.75)
with 1.61 index lenses and then came across this post and decided to
call since my order had just been placed and maybe I should make
sure. Nowhere on their website does it give any indication that
selecting 1.61 or 1.67 lenses was subject to sphere/cylinder
restrictions.

I had to redial about 12 times in rapid succession until getting the
hold music, as caller 12. A positive is that the hold music says what
caller number you are. At 31 minutes into the hold I was caller
number 1, next in line.

Call was answered by a person at 33:21 minutes into the call. I gave
my order id and noted that I'd seen a post that Zenni doesn't use
anything but 1.57 index lenses for sphere/cylinder under 5. She said
that's correct, and explained that if you're worried about lens
thickness at such a low sphere then you should choose a narrower
lens. She looked at the lens width of the selected glasses on her
screen, noted that it was nowhere near the need for a higher index,
and said she'd let the lab know and refund the difference. I was on
the call less than 1 minute after she answered, and she was very
helpful.

I placed an order in December, paying extra for the high-index lenses.
Got an email the next day saying they couldn't do that. They asked if
I wanted to cancel or go with the 1.57 lenses and get the difference
back on my credit card. I took the credit and have been pleased with
that one pair so far.
