I successfully installed gitorious on a shared DreamHost account, managed the install over ssh (obviously) and once I had gotten everything configured the way I wanted it I exited the shell. Shared hosting services don't normally permit daemons. Chances are dreamhost killed the required daemons either with automated systems or with one of their live monitors. You'll need a VPS or Dedi.
