git-proxy pid file?

Hey folks,
Running 2.2.1 (994c6607918cfe380150bcc28adb94c2c65108a0), the git-proxy script doest seem to be writing out its pidfile when I start it like this:
RAILS_ENV=production /usr/bin/env ruby /var/www/gitorious/script/git-proxy -d -P /var/www/gitorious/tmp/pids/git-proxy.pid
proxymachine starts up and is working, but without the pidfile the init script reports a failure. Searched the bug tracker and the mailing list but didnt find anything, am I missing something obvious?
