Yes.  I assume when you said "some random guy" it's "some random guy
in the same university" (plus the assumption that every large
organisation has a central LDAP of some kind, which is not always true
but increasingly so).  If you meant some random guy anywhere in the
world then I would be very wary of doing without all the "3-way email
handshake" authentication that any publicly accessible service
currently does.
