Does Visual Studio need Team Foundation Server to access GitExtensions?

I see that I can purchase Visual Studio Professional Edition which does not necessarily come with Team Foundation Server.   I see that Microsoft's method of allowing VS2012 to access Git requires TFS.  Could this be the same for GitExtensions?  Or could I buy VS2010 (which does not have Microsoft's support for access to Git) and use GitExtensions without VS2010 also being supplied with TFS?

Hope you can help.  I note that I cannot get VS2005 (without TFS) to communicate with Git.

Hi

I think only VS Express edition doesn't work with GitExt.

Do you know if VS is supposed to work with Git just by installing GitExtensions, or do I need to do something else as well?
