One thing to keep in mind is that I'm hoping to move Gimmie's Library
into a more logical grouping of content. You can see the current
spitball categorization here, where only the topmost bullets would be
directly visible to the user: http://beatnik.tumblr.com/post/8484539

Gimmie currently uses a strange mix of content-type and content-source
categorization, for example saved email "Attachments", saved
"Downloads", "Google Office" media, generic "Documents" that means all
office-style file (and that should aggregate GOffice docs but don't),
Tomboy "Notes".

Instead, all the Text-y content would go in a "Text" category, such as
GOffice docs, Tomboy notes, downloaded PDFs, received email
attachments that happen to be .DOC files, my OOo Writer files, etc.

It might be really hard to match the new layout in Mugshot without
taking on the same idea of what the logical grouping of content should
be. It's a difficult concept to agree on, and any proposal will be
fraught with compromises. But it'll be important for figuring out how
to present this stuff to users consistently.

So what do you all think of the Text, Office, Photos, Links, Chats,
Video, Music, and Files categorization I've drawn?

They biggest issue I see is the difference between text and office.
You *can* make some sort of divide, but I think it is pretty
artificial. Are pdfs really text, while slides/spreadsheets are
office? Would my latex documents and bibtex bibliographies go with
text or office? I think the best solution may be to put them together
into one large category using either name (or some new one).

I like the categorization and here is an idea (too simple for a
mockup :P) i have for how it could look like

For further explaining please contact me
but basically we need to split the space that views the items ........

oh yeah this also should be then applied for other stuff like the
office documents... where we differ between googleoffice docs and
local docs etc....
of photos .... we have picasa (soon since gdata is being used) flickr
and local

We talked a bit about this idea online. I think it's really
interesting. It sounds like a good way to present logical groupings
but still allow simple filtering. I proposed that instead of icons,
the groups appear sort of like hyper links at the top of the icon
list, next to a Filter heading. The current filter would be
highlighted.

E.g. for Video:
Filter: YouTube Files All

For Office:
Filter: Spreadsheets Slides Documents Google Office
Buzzword Files All

For Links:
Filter: Delicious Bookmarks All

For People we remove the by-account categories, and instead have: IM,
Email, Friends categories.

The filters for Friends might be:
Filter: Facebook Friendster All

It seems like using logical sidebar categories would make the account
management process a lot more streamlined. You can imagine a Linux-
>My Accounts sidebar. This would list the services Gimmie knows about
and lets users create or login to accounts: AIM, Jabber, Facebook,
Google, etc.

Successfully logging in would populate the logical sidebar categories
elsewhere with newly available data. And where it makes sense, add a
filter category. After a successful login we can morph the entry in
My Accounts to allow quick access to your profile page or settings
dialogs for each account.

Just spitballing, but it's an interesting idea. Need to think a lot
about the various filters.
