Subject: My child is 5 years old
My child is 5 years old and has an above 135 IQ. He can also read far
beyond his age level. However, he is currently exhibiting "bad"
behavior at school because he does not always do what the teacher asks
and sometimes he calls out when he is not supposed to. He also can be
impulsive and hit others at times. Several accredited medical
professionals and psychologists who have evaluated him have seen no
signs of pathology (such as autism) although the school keeps focussing
on his differences and suggesting he should be evaluated. They do not
wish to take into account the evaluations he has had thus far. I think
he is frustrated because the class is moving way too slow for him and
because he feels he can not relate to the other children in the class.
Since he is emotionally immature due to "asynchronous development", he
sometimes does not know how to deal with his feelings and therefore
acts out. Does anyone know what we can do for our child? If we had
stayed in NYC, he could have possibly gone to Hunter (a school for
gifted children) The public schools of our town do not understand his
needs. They want to believe there is something "wrong" with him. I'm
concerned that if they were to reevaluate him they would misdiagnose
him because they are so misinformed.  Since we can not afford private
school, what are our options???

Please advise.

Thank you.
