need to be taught how to think about programs and computation in the

I think Dijkstra put it best in EWD1175 (as always):
The sting also defines the social responsibility of the universities. The question is: do we offer what society asks for, or do we offer what society needs? If the two coincide, there is no problem, but often they don't, and in computing such coincidence is extremely rare. In case of discrepancy, you must ignore what they ask for and give what they need, ignore what they would like and tell them what they don't want to hear but need to know. There are two compelling reasons for this uncompromising position.

True, it's pretty cool that we have a real FP course again at the university. Sadly, companies demand(ed) 'Java' people, and uni followed, yet I think part of our function is also to form people who have more broad scope of knowledge than what the industry demands. OTOH, we want graduates to be able to be productive very fast when the join a company ...

It has closures, map/fold/etc like methods.
Depending on the VM, it has good support for continuations.

F# is officially on the techno strategy roadmap of BNP ( ie supported)
however , this is mainly for Front offices ( traders) in London I guess. I
do not know personally who use them in Bxl
.
( you know there is a lot of interest in Ocaml and now haskell in the
trading community, officially I mean now only personal pet project)
