Hi! I'm not sure whether the group is the correct place to signal these,
but I found these places which seems to be referring to the same place:
4177679 -> Wekiva Springs seems similar to 4177671
6943007 -> Baywood seems similar to 5108179
7506758 -> BloomingtonMN seems similar to 5018739
Can someone confirm if those are the same place or not?

Hi! I noticed these two places but I'm not sure what the difference is
between the two:
geonameId: 6691815 (12.92824, 77.59399)
and
geonameId: 6695473 (12.92725, 77.59534)
one is named TilakNagar and the other is named Tilak Nagar. Are these
really two different places?

Hi Luca

The oscillation between two different kind of results was due to the
fact that not all servers had the same code version.
Now all free api servers have the same version regarding this
functionality. Let me know if you still encounter any problems

For dependencies like Guernsey we can change the check to take this also
into consideration. For the Island states Papua New Guinea, Australia
and so on the easiest is to increase your userlevel, so that the check
will be skipped. I have done this and you should no longer have this

I was wondering if there was a way to find the directional region where a
county is located? For example, I would like to place "Miami-Dade County"
in "Southeastern Florida" or "Bay County" in "Florida Panhandle". I can't

The ws.geonames.org domain is old and deprecated. The ws domain has
higher load and consequently slower response time.
You should definitely migrate to api.geonames.org, it has newer data,
faster response time and higher uptime.
The obsolete domain will sooner or later be switched of completely.

The flags are already taken into account.
I can add some sorting behaviour, though not alphabetical as we then end
up giving precedence to characters and terms. We would end up having a
lot of provinces starting with the same characters and only few starting
with others.

Background: In 1991, Ukraine gained its independence from Russia and since
that time, the spelling of the cities, towns and villages of Ukraine has
been changing from the Russian spelling to the Ukranian spelling.

The findNearbyPlaceName service only returns features of feature class P
(populated place). Bornum was classified as feature class A
(administrative division). Consequently it was not returned by this service.
In the mean time it was changed to section of a populated place with
feature class P and is returned by the service.

Thanks for the reply.
The data source page says "Datasources used by GeoNames in the GeoNames
Gazetteer".
Some of the sources in the list utilize different license. For example: UK
Department for Transport, uses Crown Copyright (which you mention).
Similarly hotels.com is mentioned as another source. On their page it says

The gazetteer data files can be used commercially under Creative Commons
Attribution 3.0 License.

Wikipedia was listed there as source in the sense that it might have
been used to check capitals of countries and similar. I have removed it
as a source as it seems to lead to misunderstandings.
