in the map of the Netherlands I can see municipalities, which no
longer exist...since 1978. Others I see have been merged a few years
ago. I can't delete them though, because I'm not the owner. Whom
should I bug about this?

I think it is better not to edit the municipalities manually. There are
too many of them (443 as of 2007) and the edit interface does not (yet)
allow to edit the admin codes for ADMs. We try to store the official
codes of administrative divisions. The official admin code is usually
assigned by the National Statistical Office. We use this code internally
to specify in which municipality a record like a hotel lies. Using the
official code makes it also easier for other applications to use and
understand GeoNames data. It will also be easier for us to update
information like population from the National Statistical office in the
future.
I don't speak Dutch but there must be official information available.
Maybe on this site :

If there is no spreadsheet with the information available would you like
to ask them for it? Statistical Offices often have geo codes as well, it
would be nice to have them too.
The National Mapping agency may also have free information :

Hm. I don't know if the name of the municipality is a good thing to
store. I know of at least a few here which were merged and renamed last
year. If the name changes, you could have some sort of "dangling
pointers".
In my area I can see a few municipalities which have been merged with
and/or divided over other municipalities, some nearly 30 years ago. The
municipality of Zoelen (center) was divided over three other
municipalities in 1978 (and I spotted more municipalities which no
longer exist since 1978). The Maurik, Lienden and Buren municipalities
merged a few years ago, but all three of them are still there as
seperate municipalities.
I'm really wondering where you got your dataset from :-)

Yes, I would be willing to try to get this.

Very unlikely. They have all that info, but it is really expensive :(
