Serra's Discovering Geometry begins with an introductory chapter
titled, Geometric Art. Lessons include Geometry in Nature & Art, Line
Designs, Daisy Designs, Op Art,Mandalas, Knot Designs, Islamic Art,
and Perspective. Although we do not use the Discovering Geometry
series, I assign a beginning-of-the-year project based on these lesson
topics. I distribute handouts from the textbook lessons and instruct
the students to research the topics for additional information. A
visual presentation, accompanied by a written explanation, is
presented orally to the class. Usually I allow students to work in
pairs. The expert pair presents content not included in our book to
the class. The projects are outstanding and the students really seem
to enjoy the topic choices.
