Dear Dr. Cairns: Is there some good reason you do not capitalize the word “earth” when referring to the planet (and same goes for “sun”). The astronomers don’t say the planets are Mercury, Venus, earth, Mars, etc. That Earth, Sun, and Moon are the three specific celestial objects not capitalized suggests this editorial tradition might have started as a way to suppress the religious views of non-Christians, etc. If we really want to save the planet, we owe it some respect, so let’s capitalize it and keep “earth” to mean “dirt”. [I would also note that there are places where one can get confused—such as if study ‘earth sciences”, what does that mean? We need to revolt against the lower-case editors and conventions.
