Just an update for all you local people with no jobs or plenty of free time on Friday morning.  The Owning the Weather movie (starring me as one of the bad guys) will be shown around 10:15 am at the Durham Convention Center (Durham has a convention center?  Maybe I misread it and it's detention center) in beautiful downtown Durham as part of the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival.  The official schedule lists another 26-minute film about Romanian shepherds ahead of it, so it may start around 11.

Following the screening, I will escape out a side entrance, pursued by environmental crazies and assorted commies that makeup the audience for these type films.  Assuming I survive, a complete report including pictures this weekend.  So be there or accept my version.

World Premiere

From Machiasport, Maine, to Palo Alto, California, people are talking about the weather.  But can they do anything about it? This poetic, ironic, and beautifully shot film answers that question by juxtaposing interviews with weather scientists and lay obsessives—including climate scientists, television meteorologists, air-conditioning technicians, and Weather Channel junkies—with evocative images that subtly comment on the way humans interact with their environments.  Moving us deftly through an ominous exposé of failed experiments, and treating us to breathtaking encounters with sublime forces of nature, director Robert Greene examines the checkered history of weather modification schemes and their implications for climate change.  This compelling study of science, nature, ingenuity, and eccentricity unfolds—accompanied by an arch and oddly nostalgic sci-fi score—as a stark meditation on, and cautionary tale about, our all too human need to control.  MP

More Owning the Weather info.  The website includes a montage of photos.  Deliberate or otherwise, most of the "pro" geoengineering people were shot from the ground up, giving them a sinister look.  MacCracken is shown looking down as if to say "I'm so sorry I worked on geoengineering."  Wigley, myself and the Air Force guy look practically evil.  Roger Angel needs to clean up his office.

Another thing I noticed is that almost everyone in the film is an old white guy, no women and the only black is a victim of SAD.  At least the white guys aren't all portrayed as dummies as in any TV commercial (advertisers know that women buy most of the crap, so they can afford to offend white men, except in truck or Cadillac ads).  And my nasty comment about communists at the premiere was apparently prescient.  One of the pictures lists the occupation of the person shown as a "Marxist."  See you all tomorrow morning, comrades.

Unfortunately, most of the people doing "geoengineering" research fall into that "old white guy" category.  Also true of energy research.

The failure for this country to put enough money into education is one of the reasons why democracy is threatened here.  (Not to mention failure to deal with making sure that people who lose out in the lottery of birth have access to as good an education as those who win that lottery.)

Maybe with a more educated population we would decide to work harder on emissions reduction and we could spend less time thinking about responses to climate emergencies.

In related cinema news, American Movie Classics is running Our Man Flint this morning.  This 1966 movie is a parody of James Bond films in which:

"Super-cool spy Derek Flint, ex-agent of Z.O.W.I.E., is lured out of retirement to deal with the threat of Galaxy (a parody of SPECTRE), a world-wide organization led by a trio of Utopian mad scientists: Doctor Krupov, Doctor Wu, and Doctor Schneider.  Despairing of the world's governments ever getting their acts together, they demand that the governments all capitulate to Galaxy. To enforce their demands, they initiate earthquakes, volcanoes, storms, and other natural disasters with their climate-control apparatus."

http://www.badmovieplanet.com/3btheater/o/ourmanflint.html

The climate control machine is actually a giant turbine inside a volcano.  The Galaxy scientists use it to melt the polar ice caps as well as cause other disasters in order to force world governments to give up their WMDs.

NOTE: the Dr. Schneider in the film is not Stephen Schneider (leading climatologist who opposes climate engineering).  http://www.owningtheweather.com:80/
