FARO releases 3D scan processing software SCENE 5.0

FARO Technologies released SCENE 5.0, the latest in the company’s line of point cloud capture processing software for the Focus3D. SCENE 5.0 contains automatic fine registration, a new cloud-to-cloud enhancement that reduces or removes the need for the placement of artificial targets in many scanning applications, and significantly reduces post-processing time. Rather than utilising spheres or checkerboards, the software identifies prominent objects such as corners, edges and other flat structures within the scan and uses them as reference points.

The health of technology

Medical concepts have long supported the notion that health is influenced by ‘place.’ The landmark mapping of cholera epidemic in London by anaesthesiologist John Snow in 1854 and tracing them to a public water pump is modern evidence of this notion. Given the inherent spatial characteristics, geospatial technology can play a key role in health and health management and is indeed making its presence felt. With the increasing range of technologies like GPS and even social media coming under the geospatial umbrella in addition to GIS, geospatial technology is becoming even more pervasive in health. One can now see GPS being used to track Alzheimer’s patients if they wander off, and online crowd mapping health facilities to improve health services of their country. Geospatial technology’s increasing relevance in this very basic aspect of life will no doubt further its ‘image’ as technology for people and not just for scientific community or labs.
