Ouch.  Losing a little bit of data is painful and disquieting, but losing lots is far worse.

I use GEDitCOM II v1.7 a lot -- for my own trees and for friends' data, and I have not lost data for a long time (and even then, it was just the trailing piece of a buffered string, before that issue was fixed).  Are all your other programs working fine?  If you open the Console utility application, do you see any alarming messages?  Is there anything unusual about your configuration, like a netwokred drive?

I am using OS X 10.6.8.  What version are you using?

Kevin

    Hi

I am a long time user of Gedcom and now Gedcom !! on my Snow Leopard - I had Lion but reverted to Snow Leopard as Lion does not support some programs I like e.g. Juice and Appleworks.

When I want to save chages to my Gedcom !! database it says I don't have permission.

    Help!!

    How do I save changes?

I'm having issues with saving data.
I'll plug in data and save. Plug in more and save again. I save
everyday and multiple times as I add a lot of info. Yesterday my
geditcom crashed and I lost all the data I input during that day even
though I saved multiple times through out plugging in my data. Today
I decided to experiment and put in just a small amount of data. I
saved it. I then decided to shut down the program to see what would
happen to the little bit of data I added, saving again when prompted.
I opened up the program, and lost half the data I put in today
(thankfully just a fraction of yesterday due to planning).

Ive noticed in previous versions (pre-1.7) I would lose small pieces
of data intermittently, but losing just a few bits of info isn't
nearly as frustrating as losing the 20+ people vitals from nearly
unreadable texts like I did yesterday.

    Any suggestions?
    thanks
    Kristin

I had quite a problem with the newest security update to 10.6.8 where it did some funny things to some of my Classic apps.

Just a thought in this area.

Reading tte discussions I realize I got a problem too.

I got crashes with validating a GEDCOM-files after importing them in a new document.

When I do agree with validation of a newly imported file in GedItCOM II 1.7,2 with 10.6.8 it may crash.

So I tested 1.7 on 10.5.8, and there it worked fine.

Then I reinstalled GedItCOM II 1.7,2 on 10.6.8, but validating did still crash GedItCOM II 1.7,2.

I decided to do a clean installation and that worked at least one time. Now I know when GedItCOM II 1.7,2 crashes while validating, I have to do a clean installation.

I have tested often in 10.6.8 (although not as often as in 10.7 where most development is done) and validating GEDCOM files always works fine in those tests. My guess is that a certain type of issue in your file is triggering a crash that is not seen in any of the files I have tested.

Can you send me a file that crashes during validation in 10.6.8? (you can send off this list to sup...@geditcom.com).

If I can see the issue it should be easy to fix and post a build 3 (which will take care of some other minor issues too).

John
