I don't see why not. In general Mac apps targeted to earlier systems work on new systems.

I will also build new versions after Lion comes out. I usually wait until OS is stable (released) before putting a lot of work into using preliminary version the allow developers to try, becuase those versions often change. They even recommend that developers install the pre-release on a spare computer and then erase the drive and start over when the official OS is out. I don't have that many spare computers to follow that path.

As you likely know, but just to be sure, Lion will discontinue 'Rosetta', the device that let apps built for PowerPC chips run on Intel chips. So if GEDitCOM were Rosetta dependent, things would definitely change.

It does not need Rosetta and never has. GEDitCOM II is a universal binary so it can run on Macs still with PowerPC chips, but when on an Intel Mac it uses the native intel version and has no need for Rosetta.

I just completed the upgrade to Lion and it does not run. It starts
up and the icon appears in the dock, but the menu never comes up and I
can only force quit it.

I am working on a new version and I will be sure that works in Lion before it is released. No changes should be needed, but new MacOS's often have unintended consequences that cause problems with applications (Leopard, for example, caused numerous issues).

In the meantime, one user got it to work in Lion fine with the following simple fix (I have not tried myself yet):

I finally got GC II to work in Lion on my computer!!!

I found the solution in Roaring Apps. I also indicated there that GC II works fine in Lion.

The Icons database is corrupted in the case where GC II (and many other apps) won't open. Since Apple, in its infinite wisdom, has seen fit to make the home Library folder invisible, you have to access the database via the "Go" finder menu. Enter "~/Library", select the Icons folder and trash it. GEDitCOM II will now work properly.

Another problem with some apps is font smoothing. e.g. in URL Manager Pro preferences, I had to go to the "Look and Feel" tab and toggle the "Use Font Smoothing" checkbox. In this case the app opened but nothing at all showed in the app window.

If it works for you, perhaps you could post a follow up to this group.

Thanks for the tip, now works perfectly.

This fix does not work for me either. I am running Version 1.6 build
2 and Lion 10.7 on my Macbook Pro 17 Intel Core 2 Duo.

I to cannot get this fix to work, in fact I could not find the icons folder. Can anyone put light on this one.......... Had same problem with Fetch. They suggested a few things which did not work so they said re-install and its fine now.
I take it that there is a typo with reference to <<    -/Library     >> and that it should read as follows.<<    /Library     >> in the context of Go to Folder.

No that really should be "~/Library" which is your home library folder. The /Library folder is on your root hard drive. The Icons folder is in your home Library folder. If others deleted the wrong Icons folder, it might explain why the fix did not work for them. This fix has worked for many people.

But, I was able to solve the problem this morning. As far as I can tell, there are no problems in the GEDitCOM II code, but the 3rd party framework used to provide the "Media Browser" causes it to hang on Launch. I am guessing that framework is tied in with the ~/Library/Icons folder. Since the 3rd party framework is used by many applications, it also explains when this could be a problem with other applications as well.

My temporary solution has been to remove/disable the "Media Browser" and it all looks fine now. I will post this fix tonight (PST). I wanted to post it this morning, but my software for connecting to geditcom.com has stopped working in Lion too. Once I have that solved I will post it. I will post just a version of 1.6b2 for Lion with the Media Browser removed. It will appear on

http://www.geditcom.com/GCDown.html

will have instructions. I will try to remember to post message here too when it is available.

I will try to get the Media Browser working again, but the current version of its source code does not mention Lion compatibility yet (only 10.6). One question is whether or not users make use of the "Media Browser?" I don't use it much in my genealogy research. Is it worth keeping? It has caused a few compatibility problems in the past as well.

FYI as the home library folder is now hidden, you can get a menu shortcut for it in the Finder by holding down the alt key whilst in the go menu. (Mine appears below my Home icon)

Another trick (although I have not tried it yet) to restore the ~/Library folder to visiblity in Lion is to open Terminal app and type

chflags nohidden ~/Library

The next version of GEDitCOM II (1.7) will store all files it needs in ~/Library/Application Support/GEDitCOM II (i.e., it will stop using the root level /Library/Application Support folder and will change name of current GEDitCOMII folder to "GEDitCOM II." These changes make it easier to install (drag and drop) and will move toward satisfying new Apple rules on what Apps are allowed to do (and are forced to do if submitted to MacApp store). It will thus be useful to get into your home library folder and in my opinion that should be visible to users. But note that GEDitCOM II has menu commands to "reveal" certain key folders (for formats, scripts, and bookmarks) and these will work even if the LIbrary folder is hidden.

I use the media browser from time to time. I notice there is a new
version on the App Store http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/imedia-browser/id404126466?mt=12
updated in May 2011. It now offers support for event skimming and the
Faces features of iPhoto and Aperture which could prove useful in a
Genealogy application. Although it doesn't specifically mention Lion
it does say 10.6.6 or later so it must be fairly up to date and since
the developer versions of Lion were available. Having said that my
GEDitCOM is not causing any issues anyway as I mentioned in my post to
the other thread.

I went the Media Browser repository and it too does not mention Lion. I plan to try that version and see if it is fixed. They migrated their source to a new system, which has no obvious instructions on checking it out. I will look some more soon.

hi if you haven't got it going this is the info i used,

The Icons database is corrupted in the case where GC II (and many other apps) won't open. Since Apple, in its infinite wisdom, has seen fit to make the home Library folder invisible, you have to access the database via the "Go" finder menu. Enter "~/Library", select the Icons folder and trash it. GEDitCOM II will now work properly.
to find the folder do as above ie. click Finder from info bar at top of screen click Go at bottom of drop down list click Go To Folder in Box type ~/Library find the Icons Folder and trash it, this should work, what are you using iMac or mac book?
the typo ~ is on key board from left side second row up, second key in hold shift and ~` key you should get ~
hope this helps you sort it

If you don't like having an invisible library you can make it
permanently visible using GoodbyeHello available here
http://www.limit-point.com/Utilities/GoodbyeHello.html

Better than some other options I have seen which make everything
visible.

It has demo period of, I think, 30 days but certainly long enough to
make one folder visible. Not sure if it will become invisible again
when 10.7.1 is released.
