GCII 1.7 will not delete Place records. Using the Edit Menu's item
"Delete Place Record" appears to delete
a Place record, but upon reopening the file containing the record, it
has not been removed. I also tried removing the GEDCOM source in the
editor. That only succeeded in losing the name of the Place.

I am merging Place records and found I had a few comments stored as
places. I can change places but I cannot remove them.

It does delete them, but will recreate them if they are still used in a place field. You should remove (or move) that comment in a place field in the individual or family record. If you then delete the place record, it will be gone for good.

Normally such places are only used in one record. If you are looking at the place record, use the "Referenced By" menu command to find the record and delete in the place field first. You can then delete the place record. If you are cleaning up a file, you can work with the place fields and remove all unlinked place records later by searching for them (see search window and record type of unused place).

This situtation didn't arise in my place editing. Normally I was changing place names, but never deleting them. I will try to think of better way handle place record deletions when they are still used in place fields.
