Alternatively, the "i" icon after date is not specific about the date,
but opens a window to enter details about the birth event as a whole.
You could therefore enter both date and place sources in that window.
This approach might be good if you prefer all the birth sources in the
same place and you can enter any number of sources in that window.
Thus you can pick which ever way you like best. I do think putting the
place source in the place details windows is unambiguously about the
use of that source.
The solution I am looking for is for the link button to be able to figure out which link should be detached and I really want this to happen without having to rewrite all user interface formats to tell the link buttons what to detach.

I can't recall what I did with level 3 links. They are very uncommon in GEDCOM files, although might have some uses. The new detach method will work with them. The other way is to detach its parent data or work with the GEDCOM source for the record.
