If you have a different source for an individual's birthdate and
birthplace, I assume you enter the birthdate source by clicking on the
details icon to the right of the birthplace field and then click on
the source icon. My question is about entering the source for the
birthplace. Do you click on the compass to the right of the birthplace
field and ten click on the source icon? Or is that source for the
longitude and latitude of the birthplace?

Thanks!

You can enter sources in those two different place as you suggest.

Alternatively, the "i" icon after date is not specific about the date,
but opens a window to enter details about the birth event as a whole.
You could therefore enter both date and place sources in that window.
This approach might be good if you prefer all the birth sources in the
same place and you can enter any number of sources in that window.

Thus you can pick which ever way you like best. I do think putting the
place source in the place details windows is unambiguously about the
use of that source.

How do you detach a place source ( the one that is added when you
click on the Compass and then the Source icon) in the place details
window?

Thanks!

You can use the menu command Detach -> Event/Attribute/Link... It will
you a list of all links in that record and you find the one you
mentioned and remove it.

Alternatively, you can usually control click on the link to the source
and select detach from the pop-up menu. For technical reasons, the
detach option does not always show, but I working to solve that
technical issues. If it does not show up, the menu command will always
work.

I'm not sure that this is right.

The Detatch -> Event/Attribute/Link menu displays a dialog where all
events are listed with their sources/notes/MM objects for example
BIRT.NOTE , BIRT.SOUR or BIRT.OBJE. But it doesn't show links that are
buried deeper in the structure such as BIRT.SOUR.NOTE

Ken asked about a place source which would be something like
BIRT.PLAC.SOUR and these don't show either.

Also, I have never seen an option in a contextual menu when control
clicking. What is the technical issue as I seem to have it
permanently?

That is correct. The level 3 sources (BIRT.PLAC.SOUR) do not show up
in the list when using the menu command but the level 2 sources do
show up. The control-click works sometimes as John said. I have also
used the source editor to delete the level 3 sources.

The technical reason is that a button to link to another record can be created many different ways in a user interface format. The link itself, need not be connected to an actual link in the data. The current code solves this issue partially by searching for the link. The detach menu command will appear if the record is linked only once to that cited record. If it is linked twice (for example a source cited in both the birth and death events), it is not able to determine which one you want to detach and hence the menu command is omitted.

The solution I am looking for is for the link button to be able to figure out which link should be detached and I really want this to happen without having to rewrite all user interface formats to tell the link buttons what to detach.

Thanks. Now I understand why it doesn't work for me as most of my
sources are linked more than once.

How about the level 3 links in the detach dialog? If I remember
correctly GEDitCOM I used to show them, but it's very possible that I
am not remembering correctly.

I have detaching links much better know (to be posted soon). Essentially all links can be controlled clicked and detached by selecting detach command in the pop-up menu.

I can't recall what I did with level 3 links. They are very uncommon in GEDCOM files, although might have some uses. The new detach method will work with them. The other way is to detach its parent data or work with the GEDCOM source for the record.
