Simplest way to find an individual by name

I feel foolish for asking such a basic question, but I'm curious what the "right" way is to find an individual by name.  When I start up GEDitCOM II, I'm presented with the list of individuals.  Clearly, I can scroll through the list, but it's a long list.  I expected there to be some sort of "search as I type" interface, but I'm not finding anything like that.  What's the best way to do this?

In the blank at the top of the list, type the last name, a comma, and the first name, then press the Enter/Return key.

I use the Mac version and have a search box at the top of my list. Perhaps there's a software setting somewhere that needs to be switched on.
