I'm having issues with saving data.
I'll plug in data and save. Plug in more and save again. I save
everyday and multiple times as I add a lot of info. Yesterday my
geditcom crashed and I lost all the data I input during that day even
though I saved multiple times through out plugging in my data. Today
I decided to experiment and put in just a small amount of data. I
saved it. I then decided to shut down the program to see what would
happen to the little bit of data I added, saving again when prompted.
I opened up the program, and lost half the data I put in today
(thankfully just a fraction of yesterday due to planning).

Ive noticed in previous versions (pre-1.7) I would lose small pieces
of data intermittently, but losing just a few bits of info isn't
nearly as frustrating as losing the 20+ people vitals from nearly
unreadable texts like I did yesterday.

Any suggestions?
thanks
Kristin

[This is a re-posting, as you might not have seen the first one.]

Ouch.  Losing a little bit of data is painful and disquieting, but losing lots is far worse.

I use GEDitCOM II v1.7 a lot -- for my own trees and for friends' data, and I have not lost data for a long time (and even then, it was just the trailing piece of a buffered string, before that issue was fixed).  Are all your other programs working fine?  If you open the Console utility application, do you see any alarming messages?  Is there anything unusual about your configuration, like a netwokred drive?

I am using OS X 10.6.8.  What version are you using?

Sorry, I didn't see your post.
I'm not having issues with anything else, no messages or anything
which would help explain the issue.
Im now using OS X 10.7.3 but was previously using 10.6.8 and lost some
data with that a while ago. That loss was on another family geditcom
that I was working on (Ive got a few different ones for various
families).
I understand losing data that wasn't saved, or losing data that wasn't
saved before a crash (this is the only program I have that crashes,
and the crashes have been throughout various versions of geditcom
while used on various versions of OS X). I don't understand losing
saved data after the program crashes or losing saved data after I shut
the program down.
Sigh. I'll just continue to save every few individuals data (i.e.
save more often than normal).

Despite all that I did want to say that I just love the newer version
of "create a website". It has nearly everything I want.

Hi Kristin,

Thank you for the upbeat words about "create a website". Glad you
like it. I encourage you to make feature requests that would make
your website even nicer.

GEDitCOM should be as crash-proof as possible. I know of only 2
circumstances (besides hardware failures) that can cause crashes with
the current (1.7 build 2) release -- both involve exhausted memory.
One is when you leave a chart open for a long time and have a chart
layout that can eat memory (it does not happen for all charts) --
we've fixed that and the fix will be in build 3. The other seems to
happen when importing a large file (6MB, in the known case) on a
machine with 2GB of RAM -- we are working on that issue and hope to
solve it.

So if you are having some other reason behind your crash and data
loss, we definitely want to understand it. If it happens again, make
some notes about what you were doing and contact us right away so we
can try and help.

Kevin
